Pollution bathes Tucson, Arizona, as seen from the Catalina Highway, aka Mt. Lemmon Highway, General Hitchcock Highway, Sky Island Byway, and Arizona Forest Highway 39.

While visiting a number of spots on Mt. Lemmon, outside Tucson, I was able to see 6 different Painted Redstarts, most of whom were not very cooperative photographically. Until I located an adult male that seemed to be feeding around a restroom. He would sit in the trees/bushes snapping at insects then periodically he would fly to the top of the restroom and call, flashing his tail all the time. Profile shot.

UGH, I hate this new layout.

There is nothing about it I like. And, why the hell would I put a tag "songbird"??? And call it an Animal??????

Today was another day of strong winds but less humidity than Tuesday. Summerhaven is still standing (knock wood) and the pre-evacuation notice for parts of Oro Valley and Catalina Foothills has been reduced. Oracle is now under a pre-evacuation notice.

Mt. Lemmon at Incinerator Ridge, Pima, Arizona

The wonderful people of Tucson will drive up Mount Lemmon after it snows to put snow on their vehicles and in their trucks and drive it back down into the city.

People with 4WD will drive onto side roads off Mt Lemmon Highway to "test out" the capabilities of their drivetrains. (Psst, it's the tires that make all the difference.)

Needless to say that the driving proficiency of the average Tucsonan in these conditions isn't the greatest, with people getting stuck in barely any snow, and braking on ice instead of before ice. Dangerous!

A daytime moon rises over Mt. Lemmon outside of Tucson, Arizona.

I've been waiting for the chance to do this (otisblank.com/2011/01/11/took-the-w108-up-mt-lemmon/) again and I finally got the chance today. Took a lot of film photos, I'll post them when I can.

"It's MAGNIFICENT!" - The Magnificent Hummingbird

I photographed this much sought out species of Hummingbird at Mt. Lemmon, AZ. Mature males, have amazing colors that flash bright in the sun. This is one of the largest Hummingbird species in our area.

This is a failed 12-photo panorama I shot during the Lyrid Meteor shower at Rose Canyon Lake during Blue Hour. My last battery died while taking the pano which is why I didn't capture the entire milky way galaxy band. I still think it came out alright since I caught a couple Lyrids in this shot.

Our first outing was a causal drive up Mount Lemmon, stopping at many if not most of the scenic overlooks. Enjoy the trip up and down the mountian.

I was so excited to finally come across this beetle again on Mt Lemmon. I had briefly seen one years ago along the Green Mountain Trail but it flew away before I had a chance to capture an image. Supposedly they can right themselves with a click. I didn't try to make that happen but it sure would be interesting to see.

I joined Ned and the gang on the final summer Mount Lemmon hike on August 26 2015. We hiked the loop formed by the Mt. Lemmon Trail and the Meadow Trail (formerly the Power Line Road and the Lemmon Park Trail) at the top of the mountain.

the color of changing leaves on Mt Lemmon.... before the snow

The road to the summit of Mt. Lemmon has many twists and turns. It also has many overlooks and vistas. (Scanned from a Kodachrome slide)

"watch where you sit" - Desert Centipede - While photographing at Mt.Lemmon, I checked out every bathroom I saw. Due to the higher humidity, and shelter they provide, bathrooms are a great place to find critters. Imagine my surprise when this 6-8 inch long Desert Centipede came scrambling down the wall, and under the door into the restroom. It pays to hang out in bathrooms!
