This is the snowplay area set up at the Paradise Visitor area on Mt. Rainier. The kids (and adults) had a blast sledding!! You can click on the following photos to see them large, if you want!
Mt. Hood rises 11,235 ft. above sea level; its base spreads over 92 miles.
Mt. Hood dates from the late Pleistocene Era.
Mt. Hood is the highest mountain in Oregon; the 4th highest in the string of Cascade Mountain Range volcanoes that stretch from Mt. Garibaldi in British Columbia south to Mt. Lassen in Northern California.
"Wy’East" is the American Indian name for Mt. Hood. (Mt. Adams was Klickitat and Mt. St. Helens was Loowit, and the Great Spirit was called Tyee Sahalie.)
Mt. Hood is a dormant or "sleeping" volcano, with steam constantly spewing from fumarole areas.
Recent eruptions (all minor): 1804, 1853, 1854, 1859, 1865, and 1907. Scientists believe Mt. Hood could have a significant eruption within the next 75 years.
Eleven glaciers grace Mt. Hood’s peak.
Mt. Hood is 22 miles south of the Columbia River.
The first white men "discovered" the mountain on October 29, 1792, when British Navy Lt. William E. Broughton and his crew (representing King George III) saw it from the Columbia River near the mouth of the Willamette River. Broughton named the peak for famed British naval officer (and later, Admiral) Alexander Arthur Hood (who never saw the mountain).
In 1805, Lewis & Clark became the first Americans to see the mountain, first calling it "the Falls Mountain, or Timm Mountain", until learning of the prior naming by the British. Timm was the Indian name given to the falls area in the Columbia River just above the site of The Dalles.
Along Trout Lake Hwy, I had to pull over a bunch of times to take photos of Mt Adams in the nice late afternoon light. I like this one, with the farmland in the foreground.
I was happy to get such nice views of Mt Adams. During my weekend visited to Portland, Oregon, and back to Seattle, I should have had excellent views of no less than four snow-capped volcanos -- Mt Hood, Mt St Helens, Mt Adams, and Mt Rainier. But all hid in clouds, except Mt Adams here. Mt St Helens was wrapped in clouds, but showing a few hints of ice and glacier. Mt Hood was totally hidden by clouds, except by the time I got near Mt Adams, when I got a few distant peeks of Hood's pointy top. Mt Rainier was mostly in clouds too.

I had such a hard time shooting here. The light coming in from the right side of the frame was very harsh and I was looking forward to it getting softer later on as we got closer to sunset, but unfortunately that never happened as a big fog bank suddenly rose up from below and completely blocked any view of the mountain. This view is from the Emmons Vista trail on the Sunrise side of the mountain, looking toward the Emmons Glacier. Supposedly this area had the most wildflowers in bloom but as you can see they are still pretty sparse. I guess I was probably a couple of weeks too early before the flowers really start going nuts.
Mt. Everest seen from Druk air flight from Delhi to Paro. Mount Everest (8848m) is called Sagarmatha or head of the sky in Nepali. In 1952 Raymond Lambert, a Geneva mountain guide (my grandmother sometimes climbed with him) and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay reached 8595m. They opened the classic route through the Western Cwm and the face above to the South Col (the rock is called eperon des Genevois). The first successful ascent on 29 May 1953 was made by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing (wearing Lambert's scarf as a souvenir). Next to it Lhotse: (8516 m) 4th highest summit.
Pseudolaureola sp. Found on Hilltop Rd bibbulmun track just southwest of Hilltop Lookout, ESE of Walpole. Western Australia, Australia.

Possibly Pseudolaureola wilsmorei (Nicholls & Barnes, 1926)? Looks very similar to the Pseudolaureola found in the same area/locale on this page. Found under bark of log/fallen tree in tingle and karri forest.

This was taken on my trip to The Johnston Ridge Observatory on Mt St Helens which was built after the eruption of the mountain...
A subpeak of Mt. McGuire, viewed from the northwest ridge. There is a small lake in the intervening valley, an interesting destination for those who like to do a little off-trail exploration.
This week's 52 group theme is 'Still Life'. I flew to Seattle this week, so I decided to use Mt. Rainer as my submission for still life. At least I hope it remains 'still', as it hasn't erupted for over 150 years. Mt. Rainier can be seen on clear days towering over Seattle. It is 14,410 feet tall!
Mt. Everest is twice as tall as Mt. Rainier, but it is surrounded by peaks that are nearly as tall as it, so Mt. Rainier always appears taller to me, since it stands alone.
