The Bo-Kaap is an area of Cape Town, South Africa formerly known as the Malay Quarter. It is a former racially segregated area, situated on the slopes of Signal Hill above the city centre and is a historical centre of Cape Malay culture in Cape Town. The Nurul Islam Mosque, established in 1844, is located in the area.

Bo-Kaap is known for its brightly coloured homes and cobblestoned streets. The area is traditionally a multicultural neighbourhood, and 56.9% of its population identify as Muslim. According to the South African Heritage Resources Agency, the area contains the largest concentration of pre-1850 architecture in South Africa, and is the oldest surviving residential neighborhood in Cape Town.

In 1760 Jan de Waal bought a block of land at the foot of Signal Hill, between Dorp and Wale Streets. A year later he obtained an adjacent parcel, extending his holding to Rose/Chiappini/Shortmarket Street. Starting in 1763, de Waal built several small “huurhuisjes” (rental houses) on this land, which he leased to his slaves. The first three are at 71 Wale Street (now the Bokaap Museum), above Buitengracht Street, and 42 Leeuwen Street respectively.

Skilled Muslim labourers called Mardijkers moved to the Cape from Southeast Asia and lived in the Bo-Kaap. Because the aboriginal tribes in the Cape Colony area resisted the Dutch, slaves were initially imported from Malaysia, Indonesia and different parts of Africa, hence the name “Malay”. Most of the new residents were Muslim, and several mosques were built in the area. The first one was Auwal Mosque, in Dorp Street in 1794. Between 1790 and 1825 more housing in both the Cape Dutch and Cape Georgian styles was built for the expanding population of tradesmen, craftsmen, and artisans. In 1804 the Tana Baru Cemetery was established to serve the Muslim families.

More Muslims continued to move into the area, including a wave of political exiles from Java and Ceylon circa 1820. After the emancipation in 1834 and the arrival of liberated slaves, developers constructed numerous rows of narrow, deep huurhuisjes.

The brightly coloured facades are attributed to an expression of freedom by the new homeowners, as all the houses were painted white while on lease, although it appears that the tradition of brightly coloured homes began in the late 20th century, rather than earlier.

Although the area has always been a centre of Cape Malay culture, until the implementation of the Apartheid Group Areas Act, it also had residents of other ethnicities. These included Indians, non-Muslim Coloureds, Filipinos, Africans, Portuguese and Italians at different times. Historically, the Bo-Kaap was larger than its current extent.

During Apartheid, the area was not bulldozed, unlike nearby District Six, however non-Malay residents were forcibly removed in accordance with the Group Areas Act, in an effort by a sympathetic apartheid government official (I. D. du Plessis) to preserve the Malay character of the area.

Preservation of the area began in 1943 when 15 houses were restored by a group of prominent citizens, with the support of the Historical Monuments Commission. In 1966 a portion of the area was designated as a National Monument. From 1971 the City Council began restoring houses and streetscapes, with 48 units completed by 1975.

Having finished pulling empties at Win-Waste CSXT local L004 out of Framingham has moved up a half mile to Teknor-Apex just south of the Marguerite Ave crossing at about MP QBU 5.2 on CSXT's Fitchburg Secondary, a former New Haven (originally Old Colony Railroad) route. They left their train of 18 empty gons on the branchline main down by the big new trash customer and then gathered up 18 empties from the three track stub ended yard there. Having dropped their empties on the branch main they are now running thru the parking lot to switch out and pull an empty from Teknor before continuing on up to the runaround where they will drop their train then run back light to spot up the empties they left down by Win-Waste.

To learn some history of this old school meandering 30 mile long branchline check out the long caption with the earlier post in this series.

In 1959 Chevrolet again came up with a totally new car. From the front or rear the 1959 Chevrolets resembled nothing else on the road. From the headlights, placed as low as the law would permit, to the cat's-eye tail lights, the 1959 Chevrolet was a brand new car with all new sheet metal, a new frame, and even new series names. The most visual new change was the flat, wing shaped tailfins. The car was built on a 119 in (3,000 mm) wheelbase and was 211 in (5,400 mm) long-which was 11 in (280 mm) longer than the 1957 model. This made Chevrolet the longest car in the low-priced range, whereas two years before it had been the shortest. In addition, the car was 3 in (76 mm) wider outside and had 5 in (130 mm) more width inside than it did in 1958, through the reduction of door thickness. The "X" frame from 1958 was continued, but enlarged and strengthened to support the new body.

Little change was made for 1960. The new models were refinements of the 1959 style with a much more restrained front end, the return of the double cone tail lights of 1958 rather than the startling "cat's eyes" of 1959. Under the hood, things remained constant. Fuel injection was no longer available, but with the 348 cubic inch engine, a horsepower rating of 335 at 5800 rpm was now achieved. This involved the use of three double-barrel carburettors, a special cam and an 11.25:1 compression ratio, all sold as a package. Body style offerings followed 1959, with hardtops and sedans available. The convertible was reserved for the Impala series. The Bel Air Sport Sedan continued to use a rear window overhang and a huge wraparound rear window. Bel Airs (and Biscaynes) had two tail lights per side; the Impalas had three tail lights per side—a situation that would persist for most years through 1975. Many of the same options and accessories that were available on the Impala were also available on the Bel Air. The Bel Airs had more interior and exterior brightwork than the Biscayne.

or should I say, "on the move". ?

what is it?

CN 543 has NS power (NS 8091 & NS 4926) as it heads east on the Montreal Sub with baretables moving from a siding at Les Cèdres to the Butler siding (where they still are to this day).

J'ai ajouté une teinte sépia à ma photo originale.

I added a sepia tone to my original picture.

One sunset out at Robot Heart I was riding by and decided to join the partay for a while. I told this guy I thought he was pretty cool. Then he told me he thought I was pretty cool. I was like nah man, I’m not that cool. Then he said, nah man, you are. Then I was like, cool, okay, I’ll take it, thanks. Then I showed him some dance moves and was a little afraid he would retract his stance.

New York City, during the blizzad of 2016.

I had the opportunity to photograph this lovely, energetic dancer. She was great so I wanted to share what I was able to capture.

Shortening days, cooling temperatures, and snow in the high country all signal the start of the rut (elk mating season). Elk begin moving to lower elevations. By September, a bull's antlers are fully grown and almost ready for the displays and battles to come. (source: Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation)

Driving along early one morning last fall in the valley, and we spotted this bull elk off in the distance by himself. He moved along at a good pace, likely in search of a partner or few :-) Occasionally, he would stop long enough for a shot or two, and I particularly liked this one with the autumn colors displayed as a backdrop.

Have a great Friday.....and many thanks for all your visits & comments!!!!!

Lower East Side, Manhattan. (The tailor has moved since this shot.)

Albino Darwin Carpet Python

There's a cute story behind this little boy. He was just strolling the shoreline while his Dad was fishing. I watched his actions. Although, he looked in this shot to be happily dancing. He is not dancing. A very playful puppy ran up to this boy wanting to play. The boy wasn’t sure what to do as he was startled and caught off guard. I think he was worried about maybe being bitten. He was moving to avoid the happy puppy’s quick playful moves. I watched as this opportunity developed. I thought this was going to be a fun shoot. I had taken a few photos and this being the best representation of the encounter. I couldn’t pass this up. Many times, I believe that timing is crucial to getting that very special capture.

The old City Hall (Ratusz), which stood in the centre of the market, burned down during the great fire in 1722. Then, the municipal government moved to "Cloth Hall" of Darłowo – completely rebuilt halls, located near St. Mary's Church, which since 1725 years has been officially the town hall venue. The interior is non-historical. It is worth to notice the Renaissance portal remaining after the previous town hall, which is located above the door. Coat of arms of the city – a griffin with a tail of a fish – and an inscription in Latin, which in translation reads: "The city was founded in the 12th (the last two digits of the date has not been included because they were then known), the AD, was enlarged in 1312. Three times burned: 1589, 1624, 1648. as many times risen from the ashes. Kind to God and the prince, be always fortunate. Grow and flourish. May God make you happy and may Prince protect you for a long time. But the despair, the fire destroyed it again in 1675 and 1722 and the town hall was rebuilt in 1725 and let it be for the last time".

Dreams of the citizens came true. To this day, the Town Hall is home to the municipal government and the city – untouched – survived the march of the Red Army that won the Western Pomerania in winter of 1945.

He is about to make a move that then created a long chatters amongst the spectators.

For the past several years Metrolinx has periodically done major weekend construction projects on the former-CN Oakville Sub (now owned by Metrolinx) that have required VIA to detour their Toronto-Windsor trains over a circuitous CN routing.

On this day I had forgotten that detours were scheduled so was not expecting the appearance of VIA #71. As a consequence I didn't really get a shot that fixes the location as somewhere unusual for a VIA train. I did better later in the day.

The "Dark Future" paint job was starting to show itself as seen on the second motor; the shopping cart [CSX] logo would soon be saturating the fleet.
