Designed in 1712, the Zaglia Bridge was built in 1797 by the Genoese master mason Antonio Bensa to make it easier for transhumant shepherds and inhabitants threatened by the land crisis to move around. It is representative of the Genoese bridges. The impressive opening of its arch is explained by the strong seasonal flow of the Tavulella and its tributaries. The construction of a bridge like the one at Zaglia takes one or two years. Sometimes it is necessary to divert the riverbed to work in the dry and to take over the large masonry of the abutment. The Genoese bridge is a masterpiece of fluid science, aesthetics and architectural engineering. Most of the power moves that leave Topeka are in that 8-10 unit neighborhood, but not this one! On April 3, 2021, I shot this one leaving for Emporia with just five units; the BNSF 6765, 5295, 1584, 1941, and 1836.
The 92 acre site in Warnham, North Horsham was designated a Local Nature Reserve in 1988.
It includes a 17 acre millpond, marshes, grassland, reedbeds, hedges as well as both broad-leaved and coniferous woodlands. It provides a haven for a variety of wildlife with over 400 species of plants, from Common Bird's-foot Trefoil to Orchids and ancient Oaks. Over 100 species of bird are recorded annually, including a thriving Heronry, wildfowl, and all three species of Woodpecker.
The beautiful Kingfisher makes the most of the waters and are regularly seen from all three bird hides. The Reserve is also rich in dragonfly - over 21 species have been recorded - which can be seen zipping around the different wetland habitats.
