A mother grizzly moves her two yearling cubs up river and onto the river bank, Chilko River, BC. Up river the countryside was more open than it was closer to the lake.

Three Bighorn rams on the move across the grasslands of Badlands National Park. When we first spotted this trio they were heading away from us. Not wanting butt shots I managed to outpace and briefly get ahead of them for this shot. That wasn't easy. Like many of their ungulate cousins, they move effortlessly and deceptively fast across uneven terrain. This was shot from a slightly elevated position. I would have preferred an eye level perspective but that would have meant obstructing their intended path which would have been rude.

A juvenile snow goose was flying in my general direction and decided to land not too far away from where I was positioned. Not sure of why, but the younger birds seemed to move about more than the mature birds. Possible it was just random restlessness or perhaps they were seeking out parents or the group of birds they migrated with from up north. Either way, it did afford me opportunities get decent flight photos. This bird in particular flew a bit closer than the rest, so there is good detail in the image.
Mar' 2010
Trawling through the archives I found these forgotten images.
A cold day back in March 2010 I was passing Eilean Donan Castle just before slack water which gave me a few minutes to get set up and capture some of the best reflections that I have witnessed there.
This one was captured a short while later just as the water started to move again.
It appears as though Jim Farrel has his train of dead heading coaches well in hand as as he notches out and picks up "passenger train speed" with NYS&W SD45 #6500 at Hudson Junction near Campbell Hall, NY. Joe White holds down the firemans side of the cab. Both men have since retired from the "Q".
A change to the routine for the Margam - Corby service is to put some scrap into box wagons and take them back to Margam. The shunting didn't use either the line to the left or the run round line, so the loco picked up the loaded wagons from the siding, moved forwards and put the empty wagons from Wales onto the back, forwards and backwards to put the empties into the loading area (which it was doing in this pic), then forward with the loaded wagons and back onto the main train. If that makes sense.

Smithfield Meat Market, City of London. The historic market has been on this site since 1327, but its days are numbered. This and Billingsgate Fish Market, currently based in Poplar, were originally proposed to move to Dagenham but it may be that they will close altogether. This site, which sits between Farringdon and Barbican in The City of London, is to largely become the new City of London Museum.
Melbourne Moves — Flinders Street Station feels like the city’s heartbeat to me. It’s iconic, yes, but more than that, it’s a living crossroads where movement, light, and everyday stories collide. Standing beneath those timeworn clocks, watching people stream in and out, you can feel the pulse of Melbourne in real time. I love capturing the dance of shadow and light in spaces like this — the way it slips across tiles, silhouettes commuters, and turns an ordinary moment into something quietly cinematic. This “street” frame is exactly why I keep searching for light and shade: it’s Melbourne in motion, layered, textured, and unmistakably alive.
For several years WC and successor CN moved all-rail loaded and empty taconite ore trains from Virginia, Minn. to the Escanaba ore docks. They ran down the Superior Sub to Ladysmith, then headed east along the original Soo Line main to Hermansville, then onto the ex-C&NW into Escanaba. These were fun trains to chase on the little used line east of Ladysmith (especially between Rhinelander and Goodman, which had no other traffic). In the latter days of the trains operation, three CN SD40-3s bring an empty across the Flambeau River in Ladysmith on Feb. 10, 2007. Alas, today the docks at Esky are dormant, as is much of the trains route across Wisconsin.
