Mount Lemmon area, Pima County, Arizona

I'm looking over some past photos...

Soon, when my car's air conditioner works again, I hope to drive up the highway on Mount Lemmon.

On a clear day, you can see the Gila National Forest in New Mexico from here!

This was an unplanned day trip so the only camera I had was my iPhone 4S... I remembered that Katharine Hanna identified the features seen from this outlook in a set of great photos she took of the view. She didn't take photos of the poster. Katharine, this is for you. It is the best I could do with my limited camera...;))

I remembered incorrectly. Katharine's photos were taken from Sykes Knob outlook. She did, however, refer to this poster: She wrote:

"You asked in your comment on this photo www.flickr.com/photos/goldengirl2011/9131281222/ whether I knew of a good atlas with mountains around Tucson identified. I don't know of one. The best thing I've seen for the view in the photo is an interpretive sign at the San Pedro Vista point which identifies several different mountain ranges in addition to the Galiuros. Of course, I did not think to take a photo of if when I was there. Will have to snap it next time I'm up there. I do use a topo map of the Catalinas which helps ID some locations."

This is a composite of two out of a number photos I took of a roadside poster that identifies landmarks and mountain ranges visible at the San Pedro Vista outlook. this outlook point is on the highway up Mount Lemmon on the way to Summerhaven.

I scaled and combined two photos using DoubleTake on my iMac. I cropped and added text in Pixelmator which uses layers and a has bunch of useful and fun tools. Then I sharpened and added a bit of contrast and saturation in iPhoto.

If my memory serves me, the San Pedro Vista outlook is at about 8000 feet or 2400 meters elevation above Tucson. Tucson's elevation is 2548 feet above sea level at Tucson International Airport .

Lovely view for sure! Great info. Thanx!

Thank you so much for doing this, Chic. I will definitely refer to the image you generated if/when I need to ID land features in future photos. I had a bit of a challenge reading the name of the peak that's between the PinaleƱo Mountains and the Winchester Mountains on the poster. Finally figured out that it's Bassett Peak, the highest point in the Galiuro Mountains [elevation7,663 ft. (2,336 m)]. I learn something new every day! :-) Thank you, again.

Magdalena Bartsch I'm so glad you like it, Magdalena. It's my pleasure..;))

Katharine Hanna You are most welcome, Katharine. Yes, it is Bassett Peak. It got blurred as i was fitting two photos together. I will post the individual photos. Sorry I didn't notice that before I posted it...;)) Thanks for looking up its elevation. I believe that's close to the elevation of Summerhaven.

So well done and with all the really great information research work on this. So many mountains and such a short time to hike them all.

That stretch of Mount Lemmon Highway threads through towering hoodoos and jagged rock spires like a snake through a jungle. While the curves suggest motion, it isn’t a landscape to rush through. Massive rock formations jut skyward and the sparse vegetation – scrubby junipers, maybe a few agaves – adds texture without softening the starkness.

This was taken right at midnight using a 109 second exposure. I was fortunate to catch five ground-to-cloud lightning strikes during those 109 seconds. This photo was taken from Windy Point near Mount Lemmon.

A view (albeit restricted) from the summit of Mount Lemmon just below the Sky Center. Shot in digital infrared with a modified Canon D60.

I will be hiking Mount Lemmon again this weekend! I'm building inspiration from my previous photo shoots there. This was taken last year on my 5th wedding anniversary and it's composed of 5 stitched images. I hope to get lucky with weather like this again :)

This was taken on a hike with people from the lab I work in back in September. A fire went through this area, but some trees survived. The clouds look kind of like a disconnected snowman? The middle one--maybe an elephant?

With a summit elevation of 9,159 feet (2,792 m), Mt. Lemmon is the highest point in the Santa Catalina Mountains. A beautiful, curving road runs up the mountains from Tucson to Summerhaven, at the top of Mt. Lemmon. It is a favorite drive for tourists, for locals escaping summer's heat and cyclists, and has been designated as the Sky Island Parkway. Temperatures at the top are often 30 degrees cooler than in downtown Tucson, making Ski Valley on Mt. Lemmon the southernmost ski destination in the continental United States. It gets around 180 inches of snow annually.

Mt Lemmon - Cool spot

I'm still taking photos. I'm just experimenting with a completely new direction - superwide angles with very large lenses (well, relative to my usual 18 mm). This is my first attempt at astrophotography. This is the Andromeda Galaxy. You may not recognize it because I didn't manage to capture most of the detail you usually see in other photos. More to come, hopefully. There's about 30 things to adjust, so the learning curve is pretty high.

"Can't beat the view but watch your step. Not a place for selfies."
