Taking another virtual holiday. The snow is reminding me of these wonderful rock formations just outside Tucson, the hoodoos on Mount Lemmon. #GeneralHitchcockHighway #MountLemmonScenicByway #MountLemmon #SkyIslands #CatalinaMountains #Arizona #Tucson #Hoodoos #StandingRocks #naturesart #mothernature #naturalsculpture #CoronadoNationalForest #scenicroute #mrbluesky #mountain #view #panorama #naturalwonder #nature #erosion #panorama

The weather can change quickly during the summer monsoon, especially up in the mountains. This storm blew up out of nowhere and sent me scrambling off an exposed ridge to lessen my chances of becoming a human lightning rod. I got soaked but that's far better than fried - Santa Catalina Mountains, Coronado National Forest, Arizona

This Rufous Hummingbird picked up a hitch hiker at Mount Lemmon Ski Valley well above Tucson Arizona.
Abell 78 is the colourful remnant of a dying star that has shed its spent hydrogen and helium layers at the end of its life. The outer shell contains large amounts of ionized hydrogen, while the inner shell contains large amounts of helium. This very dim object is located in Cygnus.

Panorama of the sunset as a summer monsoon passes through southern Arizona. Taken from the Thimble Peak viewpoint in the Catalinas. Driving down the mountain when I came around a corner and saw this, so pulled over and shot several images handheld, including this 4-frame panorama. The sunset was much less spectacular at the location where I had been shooting just a few miles up the road.
360 VR panorama from a hike on Mt Lemmon, in Tucson, Arizona. Gorgeous view, great air and absolute quiet.

Infrared photo of a pine grove at the Cypress picnic area on the Catalina Highway on Mount Lemmon. This is at slightly below 6000 feet. Shot with a modified Canon D60.
I have dreamed of seeing this bird since I first saw it in Sibleys. I was astounded by its contrasting beauty. I never imagined that when I got to Mount Lemmon the bird would fulfill my wish so completely.
This photo is uncropped. As we stood on the side of the road leading to the Incinerator Ridge parking lot the bird landed 15 feet away on a branch at eye height. It then spent the next twenty minutes collecting nesting material in a 30-yard circumference from us. One of the most exceptional birding experiences I have ever had. I will post more photos of the warbler with the nesting materials, along with a Grace's Warbler busy with the same task.
I joined Ned and the gang on the second of the summer Mount Lemmon hikes on August 5 2015. We hiked the loop formed by the Mt. Lemmon Trail and the Meadow Trail (formerly the Power Line Road and the Lemmon Park Trail) at the top of the mountain.

In the half light of a new day along a desert highway that reaches for the stars above the glow of a slumbering city. Cool still morning air, fresh, alive in the silence. Alone I stand in awe.

The Catalina Highway, officially the General Hitchcock Highway, is the popular name for a Forest Highway and scenic route located in Pima County in southern Arizona. Also known as the Sky Island Scenic Byway, the Mount Lemmon Highway and Arizona Forest Highway 39, the Catalina Highway is the only paved roadway providing access to the resort village of Summerhaven as well as various recreational and scientific facilities located near the summit of Mount Lemmon. Ascending from the desert floor in Tucson to near the summit of Mount Lemmon, the short highway gains over 6,000Â ft, showcasing a variety of climates ranging from lowland desert to alpine forests. The name sky island comes from the analogy of these mountains being like islands of forest in a sea of desert. It is designated as a scenic byway by the National Scenic Byways Program. and an Arizona Scenic Road by the Federal Highway Administration.
This image is a composite of one shot for the foreground and for the sky over thirty exposures at ISO1600 and 55 second.
