Saguaros and ocotillos along the top of a road cut along the Catalina Highway in the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson, AZ. The clouds had rolled down onto the mountains as low as 3000 feet.

A dead tree carved with names and initials stands amid the rocks of Windy Point on Mount Lemmon, in the Coronado National Forest, outside Tucson, Arizona.
Three of the many Ocotillos on the Santa Catalina mountains. When it is dry the ocotillos look like a bundle of dead thorny sticks but when it rains they put out leaves and bright red flowers at the tips of their branches. The clouds had come down on the mountains this day leaving things hidden in the mist.

A favorite among the locals and good training for competitive cyclists. Pay no attention to the mountain lion.
[Note: “Since the beginning of May, people have spotted and reported 40 bears and 40 mountain lions in and around Tucson.” – News Report, July 18, 2022]
In a short but quite arduous 25 mile drive, the Catalina Hwy climbs from an elevation of 2,400 feet at Tucson to over 8,000 feet at Mt. Lemmon. Shot taken at about the halfway point. Ecosystems and vegetation change markedly in that short distance including temperature which drops to 30 degrees Fahrenheit cooler at the peak. Felt refreshing compared to 100 degree Tucson today! It's known as the drive that will take you from Mexico to Canada in 25 miles.
Many seem to think of Arizona as all sand dunes with an occasional saguaro cactus here or there. Actually, there are few sand dunes in the state but much variety of landscape. In this shot, there is a saguaro at about 3200 feet altitude, with snow on Mt Lemmon, the high peak in the Santa Catalina Mountains (over 9000 feet). Arizona is indeed a land of surprising contrasts.
At Ski Valley on Mount Lemmon, sitting on the restaurant deck. Fish in a barrel! Note the bird is banded with a tiny band, showing the letters J7, I think.
Mount Lemmon, with a summit elevation of 9,159 feet (2,792 m, is the highest point in the Santa Catalina Mountains. It is located in the Coronado National Forest north of Tucson, Arizona, United States. Mount Lemmon was named for botanist Sara Plummer Lemmon, who trekked to the top of the mountain with her husband and E. O. Stratton, a local rancher, by horse and foot in 1881. Mount Lemmon is also known as Babad Do'ag, or Frog Mountain to the Tohono O'odham.
Taking another virtual holiday. The snow is reminding me of these wonderful rock formations just outside Tucson, the hoodoos on Mount Lemmon. #GeneralHitchcockHighway #MountLemmonScenicByway #MountLemmon #SkyIslands #CatalinaMountains #Arizona #Tucson #Hoodoos #StandingRocks #naturesart #mothernature #naturalsculpture #CoronadoNationalForest #scenicroute #mrbluesky #mountain #view #panorama #naturalwonder #nature #erosion #panorama
