Mount Diablo Jewelflower (Streptanthus hispidus). This rare species grows wild in only one place in the world -- on Mt. Diablo in Contra Costa County, California.

The specific epithet "hispidus" means "covered with stiff hairs or bristles", which is an accurate description.

There are many legends surrounding Mount Caburn. One of them tells about a Giant by the name of Gil who was said to have walked the slopes of mount Caburn, hurling his hammer from the summit. This was apparently to mark the site where he was to be buried. Further down is an old mine called "Gil's Grave". Another legend tells about how Mount Cabrun came about. When the Devil build Devil's Dyke and threw earth wide and far, one of the mounts that formed was Mount Caburn.
