Emegring from South Dakota's Black Hills, is the famous Mount Rushmore!

Sculpted from October 4, 1927 to October 31, 1941, by, Gutzon Borglum, Mount Rushmore was made to to honor the last 150 years of history, and 4 of America's greatest presidents! George Washington, because he was america's first president, and he was a general in the Revolutionary War! Thomas Jefferson, because he wrote the Declaration of Independence! Theodore Roosevelt, because if it wasn't for him, the National Park Service wouldn't exist, and this amazing landmark would not be protected! And finaly, Abraham Lincoln, because he abolished slavery! Washington was the only one was completed; the other three presidents had to remain unfinished, because of lack of space! After the completion of Mount Rushmore, the Lakota Indians were mad at the white men, for defacing their land, so they sculped their own monument to their chief Crazy Horse, just 10 miles away! Mounth Rushore was also used to film several movies, including Alfred Hitchcock's, "North By Northwest", and "National Treasure: Book Of Secrets" Now, there is no city of gold, like in "National Treasure", but there is a secret passage on the backside of the mountain, containing the hall of records! In 1991, President George H. W. Bush officially dedicated Mount Rushmore. Over 400 workers worked to complete Mount Rushmore, and many workers died trying to compete what would someday become, America's most famous national landmark!

1840-1867 (Green Mount Cemetery) Michael O'Laughlen was a friend and confidant of John Wilkes Booth. He was involved in an aborted plan to kidnap Abraham Lincoln weeks prior to the historic night at Washington's Ford Theatre. During the assassination investigation a letter was found in John Wilkes' hotel room written by Samuel Arnold (another co-conspirator) that mentioned the young Irishman Michael O'Laughlen. He turned himself in and was taken to Fort Jefferson where he eventually died of yellow fever at the age of 27.

Also known as Xi Yue, The Western Sacred Mountain, it is the western mountain of China's Five Sacred Taoist Mountains, and has a long history of religious significance. Originally classified as having three peaks, in modern times the mountain is classified as five main peaks, of which the highest is the South Peak at 2160 m.

Mount La Salle 16th May 2023

Tom Murphy, from the Ballyfermot Heritage Group, while he was researching came across a document which said that there was a time capsule put into the foundation stone of the De La Salle Brothers Monastery. He read that inside the capsule there was 3 photos of Saints, some memorabilia and coinage. He immediately informed the Ballyfermot Heritage Group which in turn informed the management of the building company Dwyer Nolan Developers. When they knocked the Monastery, right enough the time capsule was inside the foundation stone which was laid and blessed on 6th June 1950.

On the 16 May 2023 Tom Murphy, Joe Coleman, John Deering, Sean Brennan, and Ken Larkin along with Edwin O’ Dwyer and Sean Canna Health and Safety officer of Dwyer Nolan, , met up on site to unveil what was in the time capsule. When the capsule was opened we found the Saints pictures with a paper and written on the paper was confirmation as to what was on the Foundation stone. There was no coins of any description inside the capsule. There were 2 empty envelopes and we can only presume the coinage was taken from the envelopes back on 6th May 1950 before they built on the foundation stone. The Ballyfermot Heritage Group would like to thank Edwin and Sean for all their help and for giving us a tour of the site today. Also, we would like to thank Philipa. Philipa is managing the archaeology of the site with her team.

Established in 1911, the Mount Airy Forest covers an impressive 1,471 acres and includes natural areas, planned landscapes, buildings, structures, and landscape features. The numerous hiking trails, bridle paths, walls, gardens, pedestrian bridges, and various other improvements within Mount Airy Forest reflect the ambitious park planning and development that took place in Cincinnati in the early to mid-20th century. Conceived as the nation’s first urban reforestation project, the park has developed over the years—especially during the Depression and post-World War II period- into a park with a variety of areas, spaces and structures designed to accommodate recreational, social, and educational activities. Today it continues to offer a large expanse of protected land within the city limits where the public can enjoy the richness and diversity of nature. Weekly Highlights: www.nps.gov/history/nr/feature/weekly_features/10_04_23_M...

__________________________________________

This Mount Airy Forest National Register nomination was prepared in conjunction with the The Historic Resources o/the Cincinnati Park and Parkway System, 1817-1959 which documents the history and development of one of the most comprehensive urban park systems in the nation. The study (or MPD) includes historic contexts, definition of property types and registration requirements, methodology, and bibliography. Mount Airy Forest is the largest park, by far, in Cincinnati's park system. The period of significance extends from its creation in 1911 until 1959, when the Police Headquarters was constructed. The end date also coincides with R. Carl Freund's death, the architect for twelve Mount Airy Forest buildings. His death also established the end date for the MPD described above. The vast majority of the park was developed during the Depression era utilizing both federal funding and federal labor programs.

Mount Airy Forest is eligible for the National Register under Criterion A as one of the earliest (if not the first) urban reforestation projects in the nation; for its Depression era development utilizing federal WP A and CW A funding; and for the African-American Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) labor that provided manpower for tree-planting, road and trail building, and construction of shelters and comfort stations; and under Criterion C for landscape architectural significance as a joint design developed by noted landscape architect George E. Kessler and State Forester Edmund Secrest; for its architectural significance representing "Rustic" park architectural design; for the quality of the construction and craftsmanship of the buildings and structures in the park; and for the association with R. Carl Freund, the Cincinnati Park Board's most prolific architect, who designed 12 buildings in Mount Airy Forest and 37 for the Cincinnati Park Board between 1930 and 1959.

Mount Airy Forest was established in 1911 with an initial purchase of 168 acres. Although reforestation efforts began immediately, the construction of roads, trails, buildings, and walls began during the Depression. The CCC camp established in Mount Airy Forest was one of 2,600 camps established nationally to employ young men aged 17- 25. Of the several thousand CCC camps established during the Depression, approximately 150 employed all African-American youth. Between 1933 when the CCC was founded and 1941, 250,000 African-Americans served in the CCC. (Edgar Brown, The CCC and Colored Youth, U. S. Government Printing Office, 1941) The CCC camp in Mount Airy Forest operated from July 10, 1935 to July 14, 1937, and provided 51,414 man days of work in the park and accomplished a tremendous amount of work.
