UCL Urban Laboratory supported an exhibition by MSc Urban Studies students at UCL on 1 April 2017 at the Brixton Pound Cafe.
statues. we see them everywhere in london, many from the heyday of the british empire, proud men memorialised for their military conquests. and then there’s that odd one in the corner of our neighbourhood park—he’s ever-seeing, but hardly seen.
Monuments Remember presents six eulogies for London written from the point of view of statues. Borrowing the aestheics of broadsheet newspapers, the exhibition seeks to provide a space to remember the landscapes of the city from the perspective of the figures cast in stone that watch its incremental changes over hours, years, decades and centuries.
The great fire of London started on 2nd Sept 1666 and was extinguished on 5th Sept.
As part of the rebuilding, it was decided to erect a permanent memorial of the Great Fire near the place where it began. Sir Christopher Wren, Surveyor General to King Charles II and the architect of St. Paul's Cathedral, and hisfriend and colleague, Dr Robert Hooke, provided a design for a colossal Doric column in the antique tradition.
They drew up plans for a column containing a cantilevered stone staircase of 311 steps leading to a viewing platform. This was surmounted by a drum and a copper urn from which flames emerged, symbolising the Great Fire. The Monument, as it came to be called, is 61 metres high (202 feet) - the exact distance between it and the site in Pudding Lane where the fire began.

After about ten years time I returned to Washington DC, camera in hand, and the first place I went was the Washington Monument.
When monument was built it was the tallest building in the world. It's 555 feet tall and weighs 81,000 tons.

The Colorado National Monument is a National Park Service unit near the city of Grand Junction and Fruita, Colorado. Sheer-walled canyons cut deep into sandstone and granite–gneiss–schist rock formations. This is an area of desert land high on the Colorado Plateau, with pinion and juniper forests on the plateau. The park hosts a wide range of wildlife, including red-tailed hawks, golden eagles, ravens, jays, desert bighorn sheep, and coyotes.
Built in the late 1880's, this monument, a 306' stone obelisk, is a dedication to the famous Battle of Bennington that took place during the Revolutionary war in 1777. It was at this location the American colonists maintained a store of weapons and food, which British General Burgoyne knew was critical to capture in order to restock his own troops.
A bedesman under the left foot of Sir Henry Vernon, died 1515, at Tong. The tomb, between the Golden Chapel of 1510 and the south aisle of Tong church. The tomb takes the same form as the alabaster tomb of Richard Vernon in the nave but Richard's foot has no bedesman beneath it, unlike many alabaster effigies of the period. Sir Henry's bedesman is another indication that his stone tomb came
from an alabaster workshop, like a few others at this time.
