Cold, wet and windy Bank Holiday here in the UK so a great opportunity to play catch up on Flickr. Thought I'd start by sharing some pictures taken across the pond.

Bucharest is a city of contrasts. Not one hundred yars away from a bright and shiny, all-glass office building façade, one can often spot scenes like this: a row of utterly delapidated houses on the verge of collapsing, even in the very heart of the city. And then, there is a nice new sign explaining in three languages why they are classified as historical monuments...

The Vermont Brigade was unusual in the Army of the Potomac for having all its regiments from the same state. The brigade is also honored by monuments on the Gettysburg battlefield and the Wilderness battlefield.

The brigade was not heavily engaged at Antietam and suffered only light losses. Three days earlier at Crampton’s Gap, First Lieutenant George Hooker of the 4th Vermont earned the Medal of Honor by singlehandedly capturing a Confederate major and over 100 men, as well as their regiment’s colors.

Pilgrim Monument

The Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown, Massachusetts, was built between 1907 and 1910, to commemorate the first landfall of the Pilgrims in 1620, and the signing of the Mayflower Compact in Provincetown Harbor. This 252-foot-7.5-inch-tall campanile is the tallest all-granite structure in the United States, and is part of the Provincetown Historic District.
