World Athletes Monument in Midtown Atlanta, Georgia

One of the more disappointing, not so satisfying locations of our trip. In retrospect we should have tried a different location or viewpoint, but as the easy-to-reach sunrise spot we needed after a few early morning hikes, it was perfect.

Late afternoon walk at Ashridge.

287 steps to the top..... but well worth the effort, and the tallest monument to a writer in the world, apparently

This monument had originally been installed in Humboldt Park in 1904, but was moved to this location in 1978. The sculpture was Casimir Chodzinski to commemorate the contribution of Thaddeus Kosciuszko's engineering skills to the American Revolution.

Monument Valley (Navajo: Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii, pronounced [tsʰépìːʔ ǹtsɪ̀skɑ̀ìː], meaning "valley of the rocks") is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of sandstone buttes, with the largest reaching 1,000 ft (300 m) above the valley floor. The most famous butte formations are located in northeastern Arizona along the Utah–Arizona state line. The valley is considered sacred by the Navajo Nation, the Native American people within whose reservation it lies.

Monument Valley has been featured in many forms of media since the 1930s. Famed director John Ford used the location for a number of his Westerns. Film critic Keith Phipps wrote that "its five square miles [13 km2] have defined what decades of moviegoers think of when they imagine the American West".

History

Before human existence, the Park was once a lowland basin. For hundreds of millions of years, materials that eroded from the early Rock Mountains deposited layer upon layer of sediment which cemented a slow and gentle uplift, generated by ceaseless pressure from below the surface, elevating these horizontal strata quite uniformly one to three miles above sea level. What was once a basin became a plateau.

Natural forces of wind and water that eroded the land spent the last 50 million years cutting into and peeling away at the surface of the plateau. The simple wearing down of altering layers of soft and hard rock slowly revealed the natural wonders of Monument Valley today.

From the visitor center, you see the world-famous panorama of the Mitten Buttes and Merrick Butte. You can also purchase guided tours from Navajo tour operators, who take you down into the valley in Jeeps for a narrated cruise through these mythical formations. Places such as Ear of the Wind and other landmarks can only be accessed via guided tours. During the summer months, the visitor center also features Haskenneini Restaurant, which specializes in both native Navajo and American cuisines, and a film/snack/souvenir shop. There are year-round restroom facilities. One mile before the center, numerous Navajo vendors sell arts, crafts, native food, and souvenirs at roadside stands.

Monument to the Dead of the Homeland

Нефтеюганск

Turkey

Istanbul, Taksim square

The Republic Monument (Turkish: Cumhuriyet Anıtı) is a notable monument located at Taksim Square in Istanbul, Turkey, to commemorate the formation of the Turkish Republic in 1923.

Designed by Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica and built in two and a half years with financial support from the population, it was unveiled by Dr. Hakkı Şinasi Pasha on August 8, 1928.

The 11 m (36 ft) high monument portrays the founders of the Turkish Republic, with prominent depictions of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, İsmet İnönü and Fevzi Çakmak. The monument has two sides: the side facing north depicts Atatürk in military uniform during the Turkish War of Independence, while the side facing south (towards İstiklal Avenue) has Atatürk and his comrades dressed in modern Western clothing; the former symbolizing his role as military commander-in-chief, and the latter symbolizing his role as statesman.

I attended the reenactment of the Battle at San Jacinto in 2014 for the first time. This event is extremely well presented and a great reason to visit the battlegrounds. Transportation was made easy with the large number of buses that ran from nearly parking lots. There were a large number of vendors with a historical focus, and grounds on which the reenactment is held is perfectly manicured for viewing the event.

The San Jacinto Monument is just minutes from Houston, Texas.

Save the date indeed! For 2015, the reenactment will be held Saturday, April 18.

Booming cannons, cracking musket fire, thundering hooves and desperate battle cries resound across the San Jacinto Battleground as hundreds of history reenactors recreate the events leading up to Texas winning its independence at the decisive Battle of San Jacinto.

Holocaust monument, Berlin

Erected to commemorate the Battle Of Bunker Hill where the ungrateful colonials took on the British army in the first meaningful engagement of the revolution. 'Twas a Pyrrhic victory in the end for the British but battle had been joined. The monument went up between 1827 and 1843 and measures 221ft. 294 steps but it's free!

Ross Monument is found on the A2 between Warrenpoint and Rostrevor. There is a lay-by opposite with a terrific view down the lough.

This commanding position was chosen as the place to honour Major General Robert Ross who fought both in Europe and the America's Second War of Independence.

His monument, erected in 1826, celebrates his victory over the American forces in Bladensburg in 1814 and his entry into the capital, Washington. He is reputed to have burnt down all the public buildings including the presidential mansion, and to have eaten the president's breakfast, he having left in a hurry.

The Tyndale Monument is a tower built on a hill at North Nibley, Gloucestershire, England. It was built in honour of William Tyndale, a translator of the New Testament, who is believed to have been born at North Nibley.

The tower was constructed in 1866 and is 111 ft (34 m) tall. It is possible to enter and climb to the top of the tower, up a spiral staircase of about 120 steps. The hill it is on allows a wide range of views, especially looking down to the River Severn A nearby topograph points to some other landmarks visible. The hill on which the monument stands is quite steep. There are two main paths, one which goes up steep steps, or one that follows a rough slope. The tower itself is surrounded by fencing and has floodlights that light up the tower at night. The Cotswold Way long-distance footpath passes the foot of the monument, and then descends the hill into North Nibley.

The door to the tower is normally unlocked on weekends, otherwise you can get the key from the village shop.[1] A deposit is required for borrowing the key and the there is a nominal admission charge.[2] Locally, it is commonly called Nibley Monument rather than its official name.
