Saratoga National Park, Schuylerville, NY

Built 1877 for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Saratoga.

Monument Valley sunrise behind Merrick Butte.

Sun and Butte alignment: From Stellarium.org, I knew that the sun would rise at 105º in this region, on this day. So I traveled north about 2,500 (750 m.) from the previous night's location until Merrick Butte aligned with that compass heading, and waited for the sun to make its entry.

The Monument to the Great Fire of London, more commonly known simply as the Monument, is a Doric column in London, England, situated near the northern end of London Bridge. Commemorating the Great Fire of London, it stands at the junction of Monument Street and Fish Street Hill, 202 feet (62 m) in height and 202 feet west of the spot in Pudding Lane where the Great Fire started on 2 September 1666.

A location for several "Western" films, most notably featuring John Wayne.

If you look carefully, above and left of the walkers there are two vehicles, which give an indication of the giant scale of the rock formations.

It's an amazing place to visit.

Sometimes you just get lucky. Twice a year, as the sun sets, the shadow of the West Mitten butte is perfectly cast upon the East Mitten butte. This phenomenon draws spectators and photographers from around the world. I didn't even know this was a thing. I just happened to be doing a time lapse from the balcony of our hotel room and the sun popped out from behind the clouds for a few minutes and I noticed the shadow.

Monument Valley (Navajo: Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii, pronounced [tsʰépìːʔ ǹtsɪ̀skɑ̀ìː], meaning "valley of the rocks") is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of sandstone buttes, with the largest reaching 1,000 ft (300 m) above the valley floor. The most famous butte formations are located in northeastern Arizona along the Utah–Arizona state line. The valley is considered sacred by the Navajo Nation, the Native American people within whose reservation it lies.

Monument Valley has been featured in many forms of media since the 1930s. Famed director John Ford used the location for a number of his Westerns. Film critic Keith Phipps wrote that "its five square miles [13 km2] have defined what decades of moviegoers think of when they imagine the American West".

History

Before human existence, the Park was once a lowland basin. For hundreds of millions of years, materials that eroded from the early Rock Mountains deposited layer upon layer of sediment which cemented a slow and gentle uplift, generated by ceaseless pressure from below the surface, elevating these horizontal strata quite uniformly one to three miles above sea level. What was once a basin became a plateau.

Natural forces of wind and water that eroded the land spent the last 50 million years cutting into and peeling away at the surface of the plateau. The simple wearing down of altering layers of soft and hard rock slowly revealed the natural wonders of Monument Valley today.

From the visitor center, you see the world-famous panorama of the Mitten Buttes and Merrick Butte. You can also purchase guided tours from Navajo tour operators, who take you down into the valley in Jeeps for a narrated cruise through these mythical formations. Places such as Ear of the Wind and other landmarks can only be accessed via guided tours. During the summer months, the visitor center also features Haskenneini Restaurant, which specializes in both native Navajo and American cuisines, and a film/snack/souvenir shop. There are year-round restroom facilities. One mile before the center, numerous Navajo vendors sell arts, crafts, native food, and souvenirs at roadside stands.

Monument Valley (Navajo: Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii, meaning valley of the rocks) is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of vast sandstone buttes, the largest reaching 1,000 ft (300 m) above the valley floor. It is located on the southern border of Utah with northern Arizona (around 36°59′N 110°6′W / 36.983°N 110.1°W / 36.983; -110.1), near the Four Corners area. The valley lies within the range of the Navajo Nation Reservation, and is accessible from U.S. Highway 163.

The area is part of the Colorado Plateau. The floor is largely Cutler Red siltstone or its sand deposited by the meandering rivers that carved the valley. The valley's vivid red color comes from iron oxide exposed in the weathered siltstone. The darker, blue-gray rocks in the valley get their color from manganese oxide.

The buttes are clearly stratified, with three principal layers. The lowest layer is Organ Rock shale, the middle de Chelly sandstone and the top layer is Moenkopi shale capped by Shinarump siltstone. The valley includes large stone structures including the famed Eye of the Sun.

Between 1948 and 1967, the southern extent of the Monument Upwarp was mined for uranium, which occurs in scattered areas of the Shinarump siltstone; vanadium and copper are associated with uranium in some deposits (see Uranium mining in Arizona).

The beginning of winter at Monument Valley

Monument Valley

In the Moscow region near Volokolamsk, near 114 km of the Volokolamsk highway, there is a village called Strokovo. On November 18, 1941, 11 sappers under the command of second Lieutenant P.I.Firstov and the political officer A.M.Pavlov held their line of defense here, repelling the attacks of 20 advancing tanks and an infantry battalion. 7 tanks and many fascists were destroyed. The battle lasted for several hours. The entire platoon was killed, but the time gained allowed the rest of the regiment's forces to gain a foothold on the new defensive line. The platoon commander, Second Lieutenant Firstov, was 25 years old.

The Wehrmacht command tried to take Moscow in a pincer movement, in order to close the encirclement. In the most important, western sector, four German divisions fought against one 316th Infantry Division of Major General Ivan Vasilyevich Panfilov - the 35th Infantry Division, the 2nd, 5th and 11th tank divisions, which were sent to break through the front. The forces were unequal, Panfilov's division was retreating, but the Germans fought their way forward with great difficulty.

After the heavy October fighting, in mid-November, the Nazis resumed their offensive, which was stopped at the 42nd kilometer of the Volokolamsk highway, with the help of reinforcements, and from here, in early December 1941, the Red Army launched its counteroffensive. The commander of one of the German tank divisions, Erich Hoepner, justified his defeat by saying that the Soviet soldiers who opposed his detachments fought "in violation of all regulations and rules of engagement," did not surrender and were not afraid of death.

The sappers who died near Strokovo were buried in a mass grave on the outskirts of the village. They were all posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin. "This is the only time in the Great Patriotic War when an entire sapper platoon was awarded such high government awards."..

On October 31, 1981, to mark the 40th anniversary of the Battle of Moscow, an Explosion monument was erected at the site of their feat. The author of the project is architect A.A. Veselovsky. The composition is unusual and attracts attention, as it reproduces the moment of the battle – a German self-propelled artillery installation is blown up on a mine near the trench, the explosion flashes upward, transmitted by volumetric beams of sparkling stainless steel. The Shtug III self-propelled gun is genuine.
