This image shows a wall of water pouring out of some expanding and rapidly approaching thunderstorms. These came complete with downburst winds and plenty of lightning strikes. Monsoon 2014 has turned out to be a wet one, at least at my location in northwest Phoenix. This storm dumped 0.69 inches of rain in about 30 minutes. For the first time in several years, my rain gauge is actually capturing a normal or slightly above normal amount of summertime rainfall. Hooray for that!

I saw this very small fungus in one of our potted plants this morning (August 3, 2013). It’s growing on a pine needle that fell from our tree onto a potted plant. There is grew spindly little mushroom looking things on it. I got my camera and extension tube and got as close as I could to it. Upon closer observation there were little bugs crawling around on them. My extensive searching on the internet (5 min) I found some people calling the fungus “Horse Hair Fungus” and the bugs may be “Fungus Gnats”. If anyone knows differently please let me know. I have seen these before in the monsoon months when it’s humid. I included a dime in a few of the shots for scale. These are very small mushrooms.

The streets of Hyderabad got a gentle glimpse of initial rains of this monsoon season :)

Me observing an epic lightning show here in Livermore, CA! I've never seen so much lightning...

An outbreak of thunderstorms had occurred in the Bay Area of Monday, September 11, 2017, giving the region a weather spectacle rarely seen in the area. The strange weather was thanks to a slow-moving low pressure area that had set up off the California coast...

Weather synopsis:

It all started with bizarre isolated wind gusts between 35-50 mph that roared thru parts of the South Bay early in the morning (due to collapsing t-storms). Then by daybreak, hot & humid conditions came & then proceeded the rain, thunder & lightning. The strange weather conditions were additions to the already unusually warm & humid weather pattern the Bay Area had been experiencing. The area saw 800+ lightning strikes & cloud flashes between noon & 5 p.m.! About 7,000 flashes lit up the skies across the region at night. In an unusual display of weather madness, Mother Nature had drenched parts of the Bay Area with brief heavy rain Monday night & zapped some areas with lightning while leaving other areas untouched. Looking ahead, our normal weather pattern was to return by late week.

Brief summary of my day/evening:

Upon going home from work during early evening, I noticed the cloudy, humid weather outside & even smelled that 'wet asphalt' smell. It had rained! It really felt like the tropics! I quickly decided to do a bit of storm chasing since I knew for certain that t-storms were imminent. Even my supervisor saw lightning earlier! So, I headed to Livermore to view the incoming t-storms better. I started to witness lightning & rain in Fremont while stuck in the evening rush hour traffic! My final spot where I viewed the lightning show was at the parking lot of the SF Premium Outlets. The lightning was impressive throughout the Bay Area. I've never seen so much lightning in person, especially for the region... It was surreal! I headed back home by the 10 p.m. hour, with some lightning still happening out towards our west/northwest...

This was shot in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. The place is known as "the gateway to the Himalayas" as it's in the foothills of the Himalaya. Rishikesh is a popular place for white water rafting, hiking and backpacking and especially, Yoga. It is sometimes called the Yoga Capital of India! The river Ganga flows throughout the city and actually seperates parts of the town so you must cross over a bridge to the other side. More Info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rishikesh

Despite the cold rain, children find something to laugh about at a Red Cross Red Crescent camp in Charsadda, KPK province, Pakistan. The camp houses 150 families left homeless by the monsoon floods in July 2010. It offers shelter, food, health care and a child friendly space to help kids cope with the trauma they have experienced. The camp will close in early 2011, but the Red Cross will continue to support these families who will return home to find their villages severely damaged and access to services.

A hot summer sunset on a hot summer day - My Rooftop View, Phoenix, Arizona

Naše restauračka přímo na pláži :)

Here we have a good ole Arizona heat wave going on, and the temperature has been getting to 110 degrees or so every day. Now, wouldn't you think that if you woke up to find a glorious sunrise with lots of clouds overhead, that surely there would be rain coming down soon? I tell you, I was out there in my front lawn doing a rain dance like crazy. Nada, nothing, zilch. And then about an hour later, my friend rusty_tripod wrote me to say "Thanks for that rain dance!" It did rain, about 15 miles to the southeast. Oh well, at least I got a pretty skyscape, one the the true delights of a good monsoon season this time of year.

I took this photo out the car window while driving down the interstate. Should I be doing that? ;-) This is the view you get all the way between New Mexico and Arizona. I love the drive from Silver City to Tuscon. Especially during monsoon season. The trips where I have gotten off the interstate to go into those mountains, on the way home, have been wild times.

One of the interesting things about Arizona is the monsoon season. During the summer it is a period of sometime severe thunderstorm, lots of lightning, spectacular clouds, and some great sunsets (and sunrises). I was on my way home and like this cloud, so I stopped, took a few photos, and then went home.

We followed unsettled weather all the way down 395 on our way home from the July 4th weekend. Not too long before sunset, dramatic storm clouds gathered over Convict Lake. The purple/blue tint of the storm clouds contrasted so nicely with the milkier-than usual water color in the lake, which was full to the brim with snow meltoff from this year's enormous snowpack.

My rooftop anemometer and receding storm clouds at sunset. Widespread monsoon thunderstorms have been rumbling all across Arizona for the last several days, dumping significant rainfall and causing serious flash floods in some places. Unfortunately and all too typically, the rain continues to completely avoid my dusty rain gauge, where only a few sprinkles have fallen so far. Nonetheless, the monsoon skies do make for some great sunset photo ops - Weather Station ZD1, Phoenix, Arizona
