When the monsoon rain comes, sit back relax and drink fresh fruit smoothies.

Roads in much of Sumatra are not great and can be more difficult in the rainy season. Monsoon season is off to a late start here in Northern Arizona. It usually begins in June and continues through September.

With it comes higher humidity, which can lead to thunderstorms, heavy rain, lightning, high winds and dust storms.

Thunderstorms can occur at any time of day or night, but they are most common in the afternoon or early evening because that's when the temperature near the surface is generally at its highest under conditions of sunny skies. The skies leading up to a storm can be dramatic.

As we were going to the lake to take pictures at sunset, we noticed that the sky was getting darker. Later on, a cumulonimbus cloud formed producing lightning and thunderstorms.

Thankfully, I was able to take quite a lot of pictures before the rain came upon us.

Thank you for your comments,

Since moving to Arizona in early June, I am experiencing a very hot summer and my first monsoon season. With that brings a lot of desert lightning. I was exhausted and in bed half-asleep, but decided I would try my first attempt at capturing lightning. I think I got lucky...

Hoping the rain comes this way

Here, a storm is brewing on the horizon requiring a quick exit from the flood prone ghost town of Mogollon. During monsoon season it's not particularly safe to be in the narrow canyons of the Southwest, but it does make for some exciting photography.

The Gila Wilderness was the first land congressionally designated as such in 1924 and consists of 558,014 acres (225,820 ha) and stretches 27 miles (43 km) by 39 miles (63 km). It is closed to all vehicular traffic.

Last summer we took a roadie to New Mexico for a Celebration of Life in remembrance of my mom who passed away in July of 2020.

On the way back to SoCal we made a whirlwind through three National Parks; Mesa Verde, Bryce Canyon, and Arches.

We were on a pretty tight schedule so we didn't have the luxury of spending a great deal of time at any of them.

As luck would have it, it was later in the day and we didn't have to wait in the horrific lines that plagued Arches last summer as millions cooped up during the pandemic flooded to the National Parks in record numbers.

We only made one stop in the park; on The Windows Road where several arches are clustered.

This rainbow with the La Sal Mountains serving as a stunning background was an added bonus.

If you know your Spanish, I think you can probably tell how the range which is the second highest in the state of Utah, got its name.

For as long as I can remember, I'll use one eye to line two things up. I'm glad I could capture this rainbow lined up with the peak of the mountains.

We are well into our monsoon season. Some days terrific thunderstorms. Hoping for another later this evening.

Every year during the monsoon season Tonle Sap lake, Cambodia overflows and floods the surrounding low lands. To cope with this annual flood, people build their houses on high stilts, or establish floating villages that migrate from the lake to the surrounding rivers as the waters rise and fall. This image of a fisherman in his dugout canoe is from Kampong Phluk stilt village on the Tahas River, during the monsoon when Tonle Sap overflows into the river.

This picture is from the same spot as the Bat shot, Both were taken with in 5 minutes of one another. Sunsets are very hit and miss at Goldwater Lake. For the sun to be under the clouds but over the mountain the angle only lasts for less than a minute. I went back last night to retake this shot but the color never happened, so I settled for this one.

Perhaps it is hope, or maybe optimism, but it seems that monsoon season has returned this summer, after a series of years when it was not discernible, and focus shifted to "smoke season."

Crested Butte's wildflower season started late, due to late cold and a paucity of rain, but it has recovered nicely. Lupines have turned the hills blue to the right of the road.
