Mono Hot Springs is a unique area in the high Sierras. There are natural hot springs along the mountainside next to the San Joaquin River in this area. The resort has tapped into these springs and they have a spring water pool that you can enjoy.

The rope that you see in the picture is used by people that want to cross the river and explore the natural hot springs. When I was younger I hiked up the mountainside and explored the hot springs. There are quite a few of them on the mountain that you can sit in and enjoy the hot water. I will also say that the fishing is pretty good here for trout also. I caught 10 of them over a couple of days. This is a great place to explore if you get into the area.

OK, not really. This cloud looked so cool that I had to pull over and capture it. We were on our way out of Mono Hot Springs when we saw this huge cloud forming over the Sierras. The air was swirling over the mountains and it caused this unique look to the cloud.

The road is only one lane so we had to find a place with pull outs for two vehicles that had a clear view. The reason why there is a view here is because I was standing next to about a 1,000 foot drop off. The road is a little scary to drive on, but it has amazing views like this one.

I took a trip for my birthday up to the Mono Hot Springs Resort. It was my first time staying in one of their cabins and I had a great time hiking and fishing around the resort. There is a campground next to the river and this was taken at the end of the road.

The first time I fished in the river I missed this bend in the river. I came back with my pole after taking this picture and I caught three trout next to the rock in the right hand corner of the picture. They looked like native trout and were fun to catch. They stock the river in the summer and it is usually a great place to catch rainbows. I think I know my fall destination in the Sierras from now on.

Mono Hot Springs Volcanic Area, Eastern Sierras

This is a picture of the San Joaquin River as it flows in the Mono Hot Springs area. This area is filled with hot springs that people visit when they come up into this area. There is a campground and a resort a short distance down stream from where I took this picture. The resort has cabins for rent , a store, and a restaurant available. I like to come here for the fishing. This area of the river can be great for fishing.

This year the snow melt made the river almost impossible to catch fish here. The large amount of water made the current very fast and the fishing holes disappear. If you look at the shrubs poking out of the river you can see how the water level is above normal. This picture was my best catch on this trip.

Mono Hot Springs is a camping and small resort area high up in the Sierras above Fresno. You have to brave a one lane road that travels along the side of the mountains with sheer drop offs. Once you get here the area is pretty spectacular. A lot of people like to visit this area because of the natural hot springs that are in the mountainside. You can hike along the river in search of the locations or you can go to the resort and use their facilities where they have tapped into the water coming from the mountain. The fishing isn't too bad here also.

This dome is visible on the road going towards Jackass Meadow. There was a fire in 2013 that burned around 1,000 acres below the dome. You drive on a one lane road up here that can be a little scary when someone comes from the other direction a little too fast. On this trip we counted 8 other cars on the road besides ourselves. This is why I love coming here. When I was at Yosemite Valley two weeks earlier I was surrounded by thousands of tourists. The views are spectacular here and you don't have to pay $40.00 to see them.

My wife, son, and I just got back from 4 days at our favorite Sierra getaway, Mono Hot Springs Resort where we stayed at their “Honeymoon Cabin”, an extraordinary, historic stone cabin on the edge of the San Joaquin River. My wife and I enjoyed our secluded retreat in the forest while our son and his best friend had their own cabin nearby.

This photo is of the south fork of the San Joaquin River which was taken literally steps away from the covered front porch of our cabin. The green meadows to the left of the river have many natural and concrete-lined hot springs. I would be happy to share my knowledge of the Mono Hot Springs area if anyone is interested in visiting this magical place. It is truly a hidden gem for both families and couples alike.

We just got back from a family trip to Mono Hot Springs Resort, our favorite Sierra getaway. My wife and I stayed in a marvelous stone and timber cabin on the bank of the river just 100 ft. to the left of where she is standing. Our son and two of his best friends had their own cabin a short hike away.

Here we are watching an afternoon thunderstorm gather over the Sierras. On the right bank of the San Joaquin River are many natural hot springs. We spent many an hour this week sitting, relaxing, and wading at this spot.

Snapped this pic a few miles from Mono Hot Springs, terrain in this area is rock (amazing how the trees find a way to grow in between it all)! The road turned into one lane the last 10 miles (no room for error). I love nature!

Elevation 7,500 ft.

Our cabin was made of all local stones and wood and was decorated throughout with Native American art and artifacts. The star gazing is the best I’ve ever seen and you fall asleep and wake up to the river just outside your door.

This fire was started by a lightning strike from a very dramatic storm. This was the first day of the fire. They thought it would burn itself out, but the winds picked up and the flames, as you can see, jumped from tree to tree. It ended up burning almost 1,000 acres. My daughter was worried that it would climb up the mountain to our camp, but it didn't last that long.

Built in the 1930’s and made of river rock taken from the San Joaquin River just steps away and hand-hewn logs from the site, Cabin # 16, known as the “Honeymoon Cabin” is the most charming place you will find in the Sierras. In a secluded forest and accented with native American artifacts, western themed art, and stained glass windows it’s as luxurious as it is rustic.

The large bathtub is supplied with hot and cold mineral water from the adjacent natural hot springs and the covered wraparound porch has a porch swing and views of the river and soaring granite peaks. For those of you who travel to the Sierras in the summer, I highly recommend it.

whiskey, anyone?

I found this plague when I was hiking up in the High Sierras, I though it was pretty cool. So I took a photo of it.

Cutting trails near Florence Lake, in Sierra National Forest. In route to Mono Hot Springs in March 2001. It's 25 mi one way for a great picnic & a soak.

After a couple days of rain the sun broke out and woke up Rainbow. I hurried to the side of the river and quickly took a few pictures before it all faded.

This last July 4th long weekend we camped right by Lake Thomas Edison in the Sierras, south of Yosemite. On the second day I woke up about half an hour before dawn and made my way down to the lake. This was taken just as the sun was starting to come over the mountains. View Large On Black.

What is it about hot water that washes you're cares away? Hot water in the wilds of the woods, with the sound of the wind and the river and the birds singing in the pines. This is the way to end a hard day. My mind is cast adrift upon these warm and caressing waters and my spirit longs to stay forever. But it is not to be.

Oooh wee this water is cold! Altitude 7000 ft.

Enjoying the 100 degree natural mineral waters of Mono Hot Springs. Glorious I say!

We were looking for a place to lay my old dog's ashes when my son broke down. He would have nothing to do with it so Danny came home with us.

Most of the other hot springs were lined with concrete, a legacy of the old resort that use to exist here. We tried a number of tubs and decided that one on the hill above the popular Old Pappy tub was the warmest. So there we stayed for the rest of the afternoon.
