Common names for the baobab include dead-rat tree (from the appearance of the fruit), monkey-bread tree (the soft, dry fruit is edible), upside-down tree (the sparse branches resemble roots) and cream of tartar tree.

In the dryer, temperate regions of Africa, Baobabs are a tree of myth and legend.

Baobabs are carefully tended by rural peoples and are particularly useful: the hollow trunks of baobabs are used as dwellings and storehouses, traditional medicines are obtained from its bark, leaves, and fruit, its bark can be pounded to produce fibers that are used to make baskets, cloth, hats, mats, nets, rope, and strings (interestingly, after the bark is stripped away, the baobab grows new bark).

Its leaves are cooked and eaten as greens, and are dried for use as a seasoning and a sauce and stew thickener, its fruit, which is rich in vitamin C, calcium, and iron and is called pain de singe or monkey bread, can be roasted, ground, and boiled to make a coffee-substitute; it is also soaked in water to make a refreshing drink, and is used as a flavoring.

The large, pendulous flowers (up to 200 mm in diameter) are white and sweetly scented and are pollinated by bats.

They are followed by velvety fruits full of edible acidic pulp sought by both monkeys and people.

Instead of cinnamon and sugar, I wrapped mozzarella and pepperoni in pizza dough, sprinkled it with garlic salt, parsley and basil and made Monkey Pizza Bread.

monkey bread (tastes like the gooey inside of a cinnamon roll)

Needs more garlic. Needs more oil. Could also use some Parmesan. Not a bad first try, though.

I am not sure there is anything better than butter, brown sugar and dough as far as comfort food goes......

Jerry made Double Chocolate Monkey Bread for breakfast. Yuuuummmmmm

I want one right now. "Bubble Bun" or "Monkey Bread"? Doesn't matter. All I know is it is amazingly delicious.

A soft dough enriched with sour cream, butter, egg, and sugar is divided into little balls. Each ball is coated in butter and cinnamon sugar to bake into delicious pull-apart treat barely held together with cinnamon-scent caramel. Woah baby!

The Baobab has long provided people with material for cloth, rope, soap, dye, glue, fodder, and medicine. In West Africa, the young nutritious leaves are cooked and eaten like spinach.

Monkey bread from Bread and Soup party at Kat and Eric's.

It's tradition in our family to have monkey bread for breakfast on Christmas morning.

I just created a recipe for MONKEY BREAD MUFFINS! Boy are they yummy. Once I write down everything I did, I'll post the instructions and directions

Special thanks to the wonderful beyondthesparkle for giving me her monkey bread recipe! We made it this weekend for a brunch and the total elapsed time between the first shot and the last is no more than 15 minutes, if that. It was deee-lic-ous.

Sorry for my sporadic posting and lack of interesting things lately, classes are getting way out of hand. I'm taking a photo course over winter so tune in then for more polished stuff. =)

1 c. sugar

1 tsp. cinnamon (or more, to taste)

4 cans biscuits

1 c. sugar

1 Tbsp. syrup

1 tsp. cinnamon

1 stick oleo

Place 1 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon in a plastic bag. Cut biscuits into quarters. Place in bag and shake well. Put in slightly greased Bundt pan. Bring to a boil the remaining ingredients. Pour over top of biscuits in Bundt pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Invert on plate and cool.

Christmas day appetizer.
