Monk Bar is the largest and most ornate of the bars, it dates from the early 14th century. It was a self-contained fortress, with each floor capable of being defended. On the front of the bar is an arch supporting a gallery, including 'murder-holes' through which missiles and boiling water could be rained down upon attackers.
Monk Bar has the city’s only working portcullis, in use until 1970. Like the other main gateways, Monk Bar originally had a barbican on the front. This was demolished in 1825.
The rooms above the gateway have had various uses over the years, including as a home and as a jail for rebellious Catholics in the 16th century.

This was a page that didn't turn out the way I wanted, so I color washed it and found part of an invitation to an Indian wedding, and glued it onto the page.
Then found one of the photos I had of a monk in Myanmar, and drew him in silhouette.
The watercolors didn't like the shiny invitation page, so I had to add drops of liquid soap to the water, and then - it worked.
Good enough!
2 female monks we saw on our way to mahaboadhi temple ..two baboons behind them joined them for the photo shoot :-)
This was taken at the temple near the sitting buddha in Hong Kong. I like how the monks, with their colourful clothing, are conducting a service in the background
Monks receive two meals per day, breakfast and lunch and they are not allowed to eat after 12:00 noon.
A monk studies in the monastery.

Monks always fascinate me. This monk was walking through the rainwashed streets of Bangkok unmindful of the splashes and traffic. Like a.... monk!
Buddhist Monk's at the Tiger Temple (near Kanchanaburi, Thailand) prayer before eating breakfast. As they pray, the baby tigers area just meters away, sleeping, 'meowing' as baby tigers do, and playing with each other - a really peaceful and dynamic atmosphere to be in.
