It has pneumatic suspension and motorized/remotely controlled driving and steering. It has a working steering wheel and remotely controlled original functions (doors, rear spoiler and hood - choice of a function is done manually with gearbox lever, like in the original).

It has additional two L motors for driving and M motor for steering, two IR receivers (one of them V2). Original battery box has been replaced with 8878 rechargeable battery box which is smaller so I could hide it behind panels at the rear for more realistic appearance.

Original suspension (6.5 L hard springs) has been changed with 6.5 L soft spring + small pneumatic cylinder, for all wheels. It has large pneumatic pump at the back and pneumatic switch at the cabin for controlling riding height.

A few quick modifications I made to the Exosuit.

 

The first change was to the arms. I hated that pnuematic T-joint prevented the arms from extending fully. The problem when removing that part was the arm would hyper extend backwards and did not seem right. So I replaced www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=32013 with www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=32016 and using a small axle, extended it with a bush. Now it fully extends and the arm stops completely flat. I also extended the reach of the arm with a technic bush right after the elbow joint.

 

While it does not necessarily need it, the Exosuit was lacking in firepower. In order to attach something from the back, I had to change the position of the ball joint www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=50923 . The part now extends to the side a little farther out, instead of up and down. The axle hole can be accessed easily now. Using nothing but technic parts, each shoulder has 4 mounted cannons that can move up and down and are independent of arm movement.

I plan on doing many modifications, especially to the arms. I really dislike those barrels so I plan on making the forearms more like the upper arms, and also plan on giving it articulation in the wrist, adding small spotlights to the top, making the base of the feet wider for stability, attaching another hose to the arms like the way the existing one goes to the legs (saw the idea on Reddit) and likely a whole lot more.

This is a pinhole camera, which I made out of a cheap 35mm Vivitar point-and-shoot camera, which you can easily find at your local thrift store/bargain basement for less than a couple of dollars.

 

Basically all I did with this camera is remove the lens and shutter mechanism (Which was fairly easy, because there was not very much to the mechanism). Then I took a small piece of tinfoil (with a pinhole, of course) and placed it right about where the lens was originally. The removal of both the lens and shutter assembly compromised the cameras “light-tightness”, so a liberal amount of electrical tape was used to help seal the camera, and make it light-tight again. I also used a thin strip of black construction paper with a small square cut in the center to act as a shutter.

 

The first time I ran a roll of film through it, it confused the poor guys at the photo lab. They did not know what to make of it, some of the pictures where over/under exposed, quite blurry, and there where uneven gaps between the frames on the negative. I have recently made a few adjustments, and everything seems to be working great

 

With this camera, I have found that on a nice bright sunny day, with 200 ISO film, a 1-2 second exposure is all you really need. I should get around to uploading some of those pictures soon!

Matchbox Series No4 Dodge K Series Stake Bed Truck Restoration. 1966 to 1968 - 1-75 Series. This is the second Stake bed I am restoring. I bought it years ago at a swap meet. The body is stripped and ready for paint. The Citristrip does a great job and washes off. This is a good body to restore.

O/S locker and doors over compressor, nowhere to put anything on a PVS motor as when in use by PVS the space is required for slave wheels/tyres.

I couldn't figure out why my 5x7 images were out of focus. So upon disassembly of the back I made some measurements. Turns out the ridge for the light trap on the old holders is a little further from the end. Approx .060 inch...So off to the Mill we go :-)

Sensor in original position was reading approx 5 degrees higher than ambient. Re-positioning resulted in correct temperature readings.

I cut the strap off of the top of the apron and replaced it with a soft leather strap I cut. Then I sewed a vertical line in the top pocket so I can carry a pen or a screwdriver in it more easily. Since I was already screwing around, I put my name on it too. Round House sells these aprons for like 12 bucks and they're great for keeping stuff off of you when you're doing anything messy.

In the summer of 1996 two former Bristol Omnibus Company Eastern Coach Works bodied Bristol LH buses are parked up at Swanage railway station for use on the service to Bournemouth via the Sanbanks ferry, for which the front end modification is clearly visible.

The versatility of the Lockheed Constellation airframe led to a number of modifications done by both the US Navy and the USAF, which generally shared the same EC-121 designation despite their different roles. Navy aircraft included the WV-2Q (EC-121M) electronic intelligence and WV-3 (WC-121N) weather reconnaissance aircraft. These lacked the radar domes of the WV-2/EC-121K and, in the case of the EC-121M, flew clandestine missions along the borders of the Eastern Bloc.

 

The USAF also modified a small number of Constellations into specialized variants, mostly testbeds identical to the standard EC-121D that tested the QRC-248 (“Quick Look”) and Rivet Gym (EC-121M) setups. Four were also briefly modified during the Cuban Missile Crisis as EC-121Q Gold Diggers, which tracked U-2 missions over Cuba. The largest number of modified Constellations, however, was the EC-121R, codenamed Batcat. Classified until the early 1980s, Batcat EC-121s were ex-Navy WV-2s and WV-3s supplied to the USAF and stripped off their radar domes. 25 Batcats were sent to Thailand, flying with the 553rd Reconnaissance Wing at Korat RTAFB, Thailand. Batcat’s role was to monitor and coordinate Operation Igloo White, the electronic surveillance of the Ho Chi Minh Trail from North Vietnam, through Laos and Cambodia, to the South.

 

Igloo White was the brainchild of Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, who envisioned an “electronic fence” around South Vietnam, which would save on manpower (and money). Using sensors dropped by USAF and US Navy aircraft, the sensors would bury themselves in the ground around known traffic points along the Trail. These sensors would then detect truck traffic and other manmade sounds, relay the signals to Batcats on station, which in turn would relay them to American forward air controllers, who would call in airstrikes.

 

While Igloo White had its uses and was on occasion very successful, halting Trail traffic was more effectively done by the FACs themselves or by US/South Vietnamese Special Forces on the Trail itself. Batcat missions lasted eighteen hours, requiring the aircraft to have better air conditioning than the standard EC-121. The project was wound down with the American pullout beginning in 1970, with the Batcats supplemented by QU-22 “Baby Bat” two-man aircraft, and ended for good in December 1971. Two Batcats were lost in fatal accidents during the war; the 28 survivors were later scrapped.

 

The EC-121R can be instantly identified not only by its lack of radar domes, but also its Southeast Asia camouflage of two shades of green and brown over white; Batcats were the only Constellations to receive camouflage schemes. Due to its clandestine nature, recognition markings on Batcats was limited to its bureau number on the tail.

The kit and its assembly:

Again, this is a modified H.M.S. Kelly from Matchbox, this time even an original boxing. The main motivation was a livery in/with Mountbatten Pink, though. As a side note, “H.M.S. Jubilant” was not built, but it was the name of the last J-class cruiser. It had been ordered in 1937, but the ship was cancelled in December 1937.

 

Even though I wanted to keep things simple, I found some spare parts that justified modifications. For instance, I had four turrets from my recent USS Fletcher conversion left and decided to integrate them into the British destroyer, posing as single but bigger caliber guns. For a staggered position of the two rear gun stations, I used the short rear cabin that the Matchbox kit offers as optional part and added a console on the rear deck for the Y turret. The X turret was placed on top of the cabin, just like the original gun mount.

 

The AA ordnance was modified, too. The 4 in GF gun instead of the rear torpedo mount is OOB and an optional part. The original quad (and pretty clumsy) 4x 0.5” AA machine gun amidships was replaced with a twin gun s from an Aoshima 1:700 ship weapon set. This is originally intended for Japanese ships, but it’s whifworld, after all, and many weapon stations look quite similar to their British counterparts.

 

For a slightly different silhouette I gave the bridge a roof, cut from 1.5 and 0.5 mm styrene sheet, and re-arranged the directors and searchlight station on top of it. I also added a radar antenna array to the upper mast.

As an extra I added some rigging to the mast, made from heated plastic sprue material – simple, but it improves the model’s look considerably.

  

Painting and markings:

The more exotic part, at least visually. Mountbatten Pink, also called Plymouth Pink, was a naval camouflage color resembling greyish mauve – it was not a bright pinkish tone, rather a pragmatic mix of light grey (whatever was at hand) with red lead underwater primer, which had a yellow-ish touch, much like brick red. The paint was first used by Lord Mountbatten of the British Royal Navy during World War II, hence its name. After noticing a Union-Castle Line ship with a similar camouflage color disappearing from sight, he applied the color to his own ships, believing the paint would render them difficult to see esp. during dawn and dusk, daytimes when ships were highly vulnerable. However, the pink shade was more popular than effective. While the color was met with anecdotal success, it was judged by experts to be just equivalent to neutral greys at best and would make ships with the color more obvious under certain conditions at worst. However, for some time and esp. in the MTO, the color was very popular and widely applied to all kinds of ships.

 

Most of the time, RN ships were painted overall with this tone. Later, the application became more refined and the superstructures above deck received a lighter shade than the lower hull, lowering the contrast above the horizon. Sometimes, Mountbatten pink was integrated into Admiralty multi-color schemes. One of these rather rare cases was H.M.S. Anchusa. This was a Flower class corvette, which carried a medium blue grey (rumored to be B20) panel amidships, with the rest being uniform medium pink. As a side note: there’s a 1:350 model of this ship available, and it’s funny to see how different modelers interpret the pink shade, ranging from a pale grey with only a slight pinkish hue to a deep, purplish brick red! However, Anchusa became the conceptual basis for my Jubilant livery. Another inspiration was H.M.S. Kenya, a Crown Colony-class cruiser, which carried a more complex/disruptive scheme in two shades of Mountbatton Pink, using two shades of the pink tone on the hull and superstructures for a shortening effect with lighter areas at bow and stern. This livery had earned the ship around 1942 the nickname "The Pink Lady".

 

The combination of both inspirations became a four-tone scheme with low contrast, with two shades of pink and two of bluish grey. The pink tones were both mixed with Humbrol 70 and 129, with slightly different ratios for the lighter and darker shades. I generally went for lighter tones, due to the model’s small size and the fact that there apparently was no clear definition of the Mountbatten pink tones. The bluish tones were supposed to be contemporary B5 and B6, guesstimated with Humbrol 128 (which appears quite greenish in the surrounding pink context!) and a mix of Humbrol 47 and 96. The latter turned out to look brighter/less grayish than expected, but I left it that way because the mix blended well with the other colors. The scheme looks quite exotic, but could have worked well due to the little contrast between the different colors and the overall dull impression.

 

The deck was painted with Revell 47, simulating a painted wooden deck with 507b. Horizontal metal surfaces on the upper decks as well as the tops of the turrets were painted with the same color. Lifeboats and rafts became light grey, as if taken over from a former camouflage and for some contrast to the rest of the ship.

 

The model was painted in separate elements and slightly weathered with a highly thinned black ink wash and some Sienna Brown water color for rust stains here and there. The many, well-visible portholes along the hull and on the superstructures were added with a thin felt tip pen. A similar pen was used to create the boot topping and the muzzles on the guns and torpedo launchers. Finally, the kit segments were sealed with a coat of acrylic matt varnish before final assembly and rigging.
