The architectural Zoo - City of London: Walky Talky ( 20 Fernchurch Street) by R Vignoly; The Cheesegrater ( The Leadenhall) R Rogers; 22 Bishopsgate PLP Architects; The Scalpel (52-54 Lime Street) KPF, the Gherkin ( 30 St Mary Axe) N. Foster and partners.

Appleton Tower at night - this incredibly ugly, tall building was part of Edinburgh University's still controversial programme of demolitions and rebuilding from the 1960s, which was a swathe of George Square's handsome Georgian buildings destroyed for ugly concrete, tall structure like this.

The original plan was for much more of this around this area, but fortunately that didn't happen. As is common with a lot of this Brutalist architecture, the concrete has not weathered the decades well, and the exterior all had to be renovated and replaced a few years ago.

The ugliness of the structure compared to much of the rest of the city is legendary, with it being something of a running joke that the best thing about being in the tower is not being able to see it on the skyline then! However, sometimes even the ugliest, modern sructures look better in a monochrome night shot!

The theatre, which was completed in 2014, has been designed by Dutch architect Ben van Berkel, who also designed the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam.

Informally known as "The Vase".

Soon to be completed the latest skyscraper on the London skyline.

At 50 stories high, One Blackfriars is London's tallest residential tower.

The 170-metre high tower, with 274 apartments and a boutique hotel with more than 160 bedrooms, is situated on the South Bank. The building was designed by award-winning SimpsonHaugh Architects.

The San Diego Central Library was designed by San Diego architect Rob Wellington Quigley. Characterized by the Iconic lattice dome, the library opened in downtown San Diego in 2013. This building is unique and instantly recognizable among buildings; Is it a hat? An umbrella? However you interpret the steel-and-mesh lattice dome topping it, the city’s flagship library is unique, modern, attractive, and distinctive. The nine-story steel and concrete structure is considered a masterpiece in concrete construction. The interior is no less impressive. The massive central space is defined by a gigantic arch, and floating stairway.

This is a second series of buildings (some as photographed), glass panels, abstract shapes formed from buildings. Most are in London, although they could be any city. I have not named any building, nor have attempted to find Architects or Designers. I have just altered things to my own taste, nothing is sacrosanct, nothing lasts for ever, new ideas quickly become old as will these images be the moment I post them. Please enjoy.

A different kind of sunset is what San Francisco has to offer, with its fast moving low clouds around the city, serving as a filter to the sunlight. The modern architecture shown is the Hamon Observation Deck of the deYoung Museum, constructed around two decades ago.
