Architecture – Modern

This is a fifth series of buildings (some as photographed), glass panels, abstract shapes formed from buildings. Most are in London, although they could be any city. I have not named any building, nor have attempted to find Architects or Designers. I have just altered things to my own taste, nothing is sacrosanct, nothing lasts for ever, new ideas quickly become old as will these images be the moment I post them. Please enjoy.

beneath the concrete canopy in front of el corte inglés in porto, two silhouettes drift like mirrored thoughts in opposite directions. the ground reflects their shadowplay, the overexposed sky swallows the background, and in the middle – a thick blade of silence. some frames don’t capture people; they divide them.

101 California Street, 48 stories, Philip Johnson architect, built between 1979-1982

This image captures the iconic modern skyline of London, dominated by The Shard, the tallest building in Western Europe. The dramatic sky in the background enhances the futuristic architecture of the buildings. On the left, the distinctive, egg-shaped London City Hall seamlessly blends into the surroundings. The River Thames adds a calm, reflective quality to the scene, while the green trees provide a touch of nature amidst the urban landscape.

Thanks to the presence of the Daniel Almond 'Time line' installation I can confirm this is the Bond Street station......

I'd taken some photos of the Elizabeth Line shortly after it opened but I knew there was loads more photographic potential that remained untapped. When I was last in London I therefore spent a bit of time exploring a couple of the stations.

From the Tfl website, "‘FROM UNDER THE GLACIER’ reminds us of a much slower passage of time: how our journey through this network of tunnels has literally cut through geological time itself.

“Before you’ve even physically begun a journey you are already thinking in a numerical language: the first question we all ask ourselves is, ‘What time is the train?’ So it seemed appropriate to mark the starting point of the journey with a work engaged in a similar language.” – Darren Almond"

Appleton Tower at night - this incredibly ugly, tall building was part of Edinburgh University's still controversial programme of demolitions and rebuilding from the 1960s, which was a swathe of George Square's handsome Georgian buildings destroyed for ugly concrete, tall structure like this.

The original plan was for much more of this around this area, but fortunately that didn't happen. As is common with a lot of this Brutalist architecture, the concrete has not weathered the decades well, and the exterior all had to be renovated and replaced a few years ago.

The ugliness of the structure compared to much of the rest of the city is legendary, with it being something of a running joke that the best thing about being in the tower is not being able to see it on the skyline then! However, sometimes even the ugliest, modern sructures look better in a monochrome night shot!
