Great turnout of spectators for our display at the Scottish Maritime Museum on Saturday as part of the Making Waves festival. Unfortunately we were rained off on Sunday afternoon.

A stroll past a boating lake and... the local model boat club was out playing :-)

This model is, I think, an Aquacraft Rescue 17.

Venue is the lake at The Knap, Barry, UK.

As part of 2017 Australia Day festivities at North Narrabeen, a display of radio controlled model boats was presented by the Maritime Model Boat Club of NSW.

To me the highlight, and the very reason I travelled several hundred kilometres that day, was the working model of the former Manly ferry, South Steyne. The owner had only had it's boiler re-certified that morning, and so was able to run it on Narrabeen Lake.

Fibreglass hull and funnels, with wooden superstructure that is illuminated, it is an outstanding model of some ten years vintage.

It truly was a delight to see this 2 metre model under it's own steam. What a shame we cannot get to see the prototype South Steyne, a true icon of Sydney Harbour, return to Darling Harbour, or better still (now dreaming) to steam again..

The bottom of the display has a slight tilt to suggest a ship moving atop waves.

Yes, the Gipping Valley Model Boat Club is back, this time with a slightly different set of vessels!

I liked the way this one was really cutting a dash (and a wave) though the ripples!

This model was recently donated to the Scottish Maritime museum, and the lads from the Irvine Model Boat club got it back into running order in time for the Museum's model weekend. Here's hoping the Museum have lots of fun with it.

This model shows Britannic as a hospital ship. Following the sinking of the Titanic, the Board of Trade insisted that her sister ship Britannic should be fitted with additional lifeboats (and the correspondingly large davits). This wooden model is over 40 inches from stem to stern (= 1/250). Apart from the additional lifeboats around the fourth funnel Britannic differed slightly from Titanic - notice the additional raised after decks - one above the right-hand red cross and the other over the stern - with even more lifeboats.

The Britannic is a 'rescue ship' in more ways than one - it was started as RMS Titanic by an old gentleman who sadly died after only completing the hull. I was asked to finish it by his relatives in his memory. As I had already built Titanic it was agreed that I should build the superstructure as Britannic. It became a major project as there were many subtle (and some not so subtle) differences.

It has been pointed out that the stripe and crosses should be green - unfortunately I am colour blind and had no idea of my error.

A beautiful collection of radio-controlled models of some of Sydney's Manly ferry fleet from over the years.

PS Brighton was almost as big as the much later South Steyne.

Built in Scotland and launched in 1882, it sailed to Sydney via the Cape of Good Hope, in a dramatic 89 day voyage, surviving many storms, and arriving in Sydney with much damage. She served the Sydney to Manly route for 32 years, and her hulk can today be found in Port Stephens NSW.

. When your First Minister says do NOT leave your house for three months then a man has to do something! The aircraft are from kits and the larger one actually flies. The boats are freelance scratch built and sail with radio control. Now looking for another interesting project.

A cardboard model of the well known Titanic, completed this morning. It come in the form of a book of cardboard pages, with each component shape cutout, folded or bent, and then glued. Unfortunately lost the ventilator cutouts during the build, but I'm happy with the result. It was quite a challenge.

With my model Carola, posing alongside the real Carola at the Scottish Maritime Museum, Irvine. (See my set "Gooders Models" for more on the water shots of the model) .

The steam yacht CAROLA was built in 1898 by Scott & Sons Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. at Bowling, on the Clyde, for personal use of the Scott family, who owned her until 1959, when ownership passed to the company. She carried the family on holiday cruises, including annual visits to the family's summer home at Colintrave on the Kyles of Bute. She also took groups of senior yard staff on Clyde cruises, whilst in the winter months she served as a tender and tug.

During the Second World War, she was fitted with fire-fighting apparatus and a steam-driven fire pump to serve as a fire tender at the yard. In the 1950s, she broke away from her mooring on the River Leven and was blown ashore. Subsequently, she fell into a semi-derelict state and was sold in 1964 to a private owner, who kept her at Garelochhead and on the River Leven. He maintained her until 1970, when she was sold and for a time berthed at Bucklers Hard on the Lymington River.

In 1981, she was sold to a marine company called Plysolene, of Southwater, Sussex, and refitted for use as a promotional and corporate hospitality vessel. In 1990, ownership passed to Z-Guard Zinc Anodes Ltd, also of Southwater, Sussex. In 1992, the access flap to the boiler failed, filling the engine-room with steam and tragically killing two crewmen. Later in the 1990s, CAROLA was acquired by the Scottish Maritime Museum for display at Irvine. The funnel and hull are now painted in the original colours of cream and black respectively. The model is at 1/24th scale, plank on frame, scratch built of 1mm ply on 3mm ply frames, most fittings hand made with some commercial items. She is electric powered and radio controlled, and can be seen sailing on the beachpark pond at Irvine on Sunday afternoons.

New club member Jim joined us at the Irvine Beachpark yesterday and treated us to our first views of some very nice models. Welcome aboard Jim.

The Model Boating Lake, in Sheringham, Norfolk

This is my 1:24 scale scratch-built model of the boat seen on the old Flipper TV series. The boat was a 22 ft. Thunderbird Iroqouis

A 1:32 scale model of 'Fishershill', a steam tug built in 1946 and which, after sale and renaming from 'Empire Hilda', worked until 1968 in the Barrow docks system for James Fisher & Sons. She was scratch built by Furness Model Boat Club treasurer and founder member David Jacques, who spent about a year on the project. 'Fishershill', 42 inches long, is seen on Barrow Park lake during the fourth of five 2017 regattas staged by the club, which was founded in October 1996 and celebrates its 21st anniversary this year.

Favourite front garden on Upgang Lane, Whitby!

The real thing sits on the slipway at the Scottish Maritime Museum in Irvine, and although supposedly being refurbished looks to be in a sorry state. At least the model is fully operational!.

(Scratch built, plank on frame, 1/24th scale, powered by 6v electric motor, 2 function R/C.)

A fine photo opportunity for the prestigious yachting magazines ( for the well heeled ) showing the Teak and Holly deck in gleaming brilliance. The white paint might look like classic "fiber glass gelcoat white", but it was in fact, a true Dutch shoe (left sides where-abouts unknown) that I salvaged from my Wife's garden. A "Shabby chic garden adornment" shall not be the last Port of call for this traveling vessel.
