A beautiful collection of radio-controlled models of some of Sydney's Manly ferry fleet from over the years.
South Steyne is still today an icon of Sydney Harbour. The largest of the Manly ferries, during her service, she also undertook occasional offshore voyages on some summer Sundays to Broken Bay.
This 1-32 scale model is steam powered.
Thanks to our neighbour Donald Reid for taking this picture of May and I, back in 2003. Both boats still sailing in 2019.

Before the Murakami Boat Museum opens at Brittania Shipyard Museum for the summer months, I was able to get inside when some clients were viewing the building for a wedding reception venue.
These were morning shots, so the light was shining on the opposite building. Wonder what it'd be like to take the same shots in the afternoon when the other building is darker.
Since taking these photos, I see others have had the same idea. Obviously these model boats inspire photographers!

My Australian-built RC model of the preserved Norwegian coastal steamer, had another workout on the Wollondilly recently.
Here seen with two of the managers and crew of the actual ship, while holidaying in Australia from Norway.
That is my east-facing bedroom window. The sunrise is also reflected in the glass of a framed picture above my bed!
Appropriately - in view of the model yacht in the window - the reflected backdrop is of Houton Bay's entrance - and then beyond that a very large portion of Orkney's sheltered "Scapa Flow" natural anchorage..

Sadly my favourite shop Zack & Nemo's wasn't open last weekend, but there was a little tease of a display in the window and on the porch
This is Wilf who lives just outside the city. He was an engineer and boat designer before he retired. He says he has piloted lots of his own model boats but never a real one. Wilf has made many boats over the years and he was sailing a really lovely wherry. I am going to show another image with his wherry in shot (Wilf's Wherry it's called). He says he sails his boats at other places and often come to this particular park. A charming and interesting man who had no qualms about having his photograph taken. I took many of him looking away and then just asked him to look at me as we spoke. This image capured (for me anyway) the warm and friendly man I met in the park. Thank you Wilf!

I sometimes feel the history of a picture is as interesting as the picture. This seems to have come from a printed page. I hope one day to find the original.
My model of the ill fated T.G.B. Sailing on the Irvine Beachpark pond. . On 17 March 1969 the Longhope Lifeboat station suffered one of the worst tragedies in British lifeboat history when its lifeboat, T.G.B., capsized with the loss of all eight crew after answering a mayday call during severe storms. The boat itself was salvaged, repaired and re-allocated to another station. It is now on display at the Scottish Maritime Museum.
She did a sterling job as an icebreaker. On arrival at the pond there was a layer of ice on it but a few whacks with a broom handle followed by some full throttle work with the Arun soon cleared the water for a pleasant,if chilly sailing session.

A beautiful collection of radio-controlled models of some of Sydney's Manly ferry fleet from over the years.
PS Brighton was almost as big as the much later South Steyne.
Built in Scotland and launched in 1882, it sailed to Sydney via the Cape of Good Hope, in a dramatic 89 day voyage, surviving many storms, and arriving in Sydney with much damage. She served the Sydney to Manly route for 32 years, and her hulk can today be found in Port Stephens NSW.
“Huge blocks of ice, weighing many tons, were lifted into the air and tossed aside as other masses rose beneath them. We were helpless intruders in a strange world, our lives dependent upon the play of grim elementary forces that made a mock of our puny efforts.”
― Ernest Shackleton, South!
This model was built by my grandfather, Dr. A.J. May of Hayling Island. He built this in 1937 - totally scratch built. It is about 4 foot long, lights up internally and still has the original light bulbs he fitted back then. It was left to me when he passed away in 1968 and has been my pride and joy ever since.
As part of 2017 Australia Day festivities at North Narrabeen, a display of radio controlled model boats was presented by the Maritime Model Boat Club of NSW.
To me the highlight, and the very reason I travelled several hundred kilometres that day, was the working model of the former Manly ferry, South Steyne. The owner had only had it's boiler re-certified that morning, and so was able to run it on Narrabeen Lake.
Fibreglass hull and funnels, with wooden superstructure that is illuminated, it is an outstanding model of some ten years vintage.
It truly was a delight to see this 2 metre model under it's own steam. What a shame we cannot get to see the prototype South Steyne, a true icon of Sydney Harbour, return to Darling Harbour, or better still (now dreaming) to steam again..
A trip to Bushy Park, Richmond at the end of September to photograph the start of the Deer Rut. Weather was just about perfect. As the mist burnt off the light gave a warm tone.

It's a friendly little competition to make it to the boat ramp first before a day out on the water.
Maybe it'll be a collision course to wackiness.

A growing fleet of model ships. Tall ship Oceanic Aurora was built from an Artasania Latina kit of the Juan Sebastian Elcano, while the passenger ship is the preserved and operating Norwegian overnight coastal ship/ferry MS Sandnes. This model is radio-controlled. And of course the waterline cardboard model of Titanic.
