Mittens can't wait for the free time he usually gets on the balcony when it is warmer. I am aware of the high Iso. It seems to give a good mood.
"Cibola Mittens Sunset:" I captured this sunset recently near the Cibola Mittens in Sedona. The only other time I had been there was a few years ago and it was a rainy day and I vowed to myself to try to get back for a sunset. In fact, most of the day of my return had also been so cloudy and threatening rain that I did not think I would see any of the blue sky again before nightfall, but towards the last moment, the clouds began to break up and allow one last glimpse and a beautiful sunset to top it off.

When I took this, I assumed I would process this in B&W, though as I fiddled with it, for awhile I thought I'd eventually settle for a color version as the separation between the bluff and sky wasn't what I'd hoped. I kept at it, however, and though never fully satisfied (I seldom am), decided to go with my original vision.
For those not familiar with the area, it straddles the Utah/Arizona border to the extreme southeast/northeast of the respective states, not far from the Four Corners. This is called a "Mitten" for obvious reasons, and is designated "west" to distinguish it from a near mirror image bluff a quarter mile or so east of this. The two together make for a remarkable vista.
I spent a day and 1/2 here, though would have liked to have spent more time. As it was, I shot a truckload of photos.
The Afghans for Afghans project has requested several pairs of mittens, handknit with wool yarn.
I'm doing my best to get one pair made. I'm halfway there! (Just finishing up the thumb on the first mitten now.)

The "Mittens" at Monument Valley are one of those iconic images that make the American West the stuff of legend.
I captured this long exposure (about 2.6 hours) eleven years ago. I loved how the image captured a meteor trail stretching from the top left corner down to the center Mitten plus the lonely headlights of a car winding its way along the rough road in the foreground.
Unfortunately, my technique and equipment at the time were pretty primitive and the resulting image was unacceptably dark and noisy.
Thanks to new software (NIK DeNoise AI) I was able to reprocess the photo recently and successfully address those issues.
Hope you enjoy the result!

My first day in Monument Valley was one under cloudy skies--at least for the most part, though for the first two hours, the sun shone through off and on. After that, however, the sun lost its battle and clouds, fog and rain ruled the day. I would have liked to have included the East Mitten (this is the West Mitten), but it was rendered invisible by the fog.
Strangely, I don't recall taking this photo. I remember taking a few photos of other buttes through the fog, but not this one.

This is image #100 for the "Southwest" album. I am going to give this series a rest for awhile and get on to other images from other places.
There will be more in the future.
Top down with seed-stitch stripes, thumb gusset, and i-cord bindoff. No pattern, I just knit 'em. They are nubbly and wooly and I like them quite a bit.
Just got my hands on a 1980 made Helios 44-2 lens. It is a 58mm f2. I am quite impressed by what it does. This is shot at f2. Really minimal touches done in lightroom. It does magic with my 5D mk1. I didn't like the results I got with my Canon 77D. The lens is fully manual so that is another nice touch.
Since yesterday was the last day before a more typical desert-like weather pattern returns to the area, I took to the hiking trails around Sedona and hoped for some interesting weather to emerge. To say I wasn't disappointed would be an understatement! On my travels, I encountered gusty winds, stinging groppel, and cold rain. Of course, I also encountered beautiful skies, rainbows and exquisite light so there were no complaints! Today's scene shows off a different vantage point of the Mitten Ridge formation than is typically seen. And, oh yeah, the rainbow was a very welcomed addition! I had to overcome issues with my camera to come away with this shot as it became rain soaked which adversely affected its auto focusing capabilities. Fortunately, all is better now that it has dried out.

My first selbu mittens and i have really enjoy knitting this.
Mittens take much less time than a sweater to knit, although I have probably knit a sweaters worth of them recently.
This photo is maybe too dark grey, it is almost night time.

These Christmas cookies are my very first stab at cookie cutter cookies -- don't know how I got to be this old without the experience! I decorated about 72 of various designs with fondant for friends, coworkers, family and, of course, my mailman. I really enjoyed working on the smaller canvas and, unfortunately, the cookies were very delicious, which made it oh-so easy to eat my mistakes. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and have had time to put your feet up for some well-deserved rest.
