We had the most beautiful frosty morning... It took my breath away, we haven't had sun in days, it gave me the boost of energy I so needed.....
for my very fun and insanely talented friend Robin Black who met up with me for this shoot and actually answered my question "why do they call them the mittens?" ~true BLONDE story!
Robin was supposed to come up today but had a little reschedule of plans due to our lovely PNW weather~! And, although I am sad I don't get to see you today- I am still very happy to see you when you come up later this summer!
Tomorrow is Robin's BD~ so, I just wanted to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! :))))

Did you know the Chinese Mitten Crab (aka the Shanghai hairy crab) is catadromous - they live in freshwater, but must be in saltwater to reproduce?

The Mitten Park Fold is a conspicuous illustration of how sedimentary rocks can be bent or distorted over very short distances. Note the horizontal sedimentary lines in the sandstone of Steamboat Rock, upper right. Within 100 yards the lines are vertical. Another 200 yards to the left (just out of this frame) the sedimentary lines are properly horizontal again.

The rafters seemed to be enjoying themselves.
We are all relaxing in the garden when Mittens comes to join us. She is looking a bit intense here, maybe thinking of how to sratch an itch on her back.
Here's a new mitten pattern I've been working on for the past few weeks. The idea has been floating around in my head since before Christmas and I finally decided to jump on it! They're knit in Malabrigo Merino Worsted (colors MC-Emerald, CC1-Glazed Carrot, CC2-Lettuce) on US 2 needles.
*I might need some test knitters in the upcoming weeks, so if anyone is interested you can leave a comment and I'll get in touch with you when the time comes. I want to finish up the pattern sometime next month which will include instructions and charts for these mittens as well as a fingerless version.
Continuing our trip south we made a stop at the ever beautiful Monument Valley Tribal Park. This view of the "Mittens" was another reminder to wear my gloves in the 15-20 degree F. weather!

It's definitely mitten wearing weather here and I just love these soft and cozy ones I received at Christmas (adult mittens with string!)
Just bought an old Canon 5D Mk1. My first full frame camera body. It feels special but I can't explain why. One thing I do notice is that pictures taken at even 1600 iso (which funnily is the max ISO setting besides the H setting which extends that to 3200) is that the grain at 1600 looks so much more unnoticeable. Has to do with the bigger sensor, thus bigger pixels.
West Mitten Butte in Monument Valley on the Navajo Nation, Arizona
Photographed with a Leica IIIc using a Leitz Summaron 3.5cm f/3.5 lens. The film is Kodak Panatomic-X that expired 3/1963, developed in Kodak HC-110 dilution B.
Mittens is enjoying the suitcase soooo much. His new favorite spot. Tends to change with every new shoe box in the house though.
One of the last images I posted only included the formation on the left. I thought you should see the pair of mittens!
I hope everyone is having a super weekend.
West Mitten, Monument Valley. The red hues that reflect on to the clouds above make an already surreal color pallete even more intense. Everything has a pinkish-red glow.
Sunrise at Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. There was just a bit of smoke in the air from a forest fire west of our location and the resulting haze lit up fantastically.
If your head is in the clouds, your hands should be, too! These mittens are made to match my Head in the Clouds Hood, seen here:

A nice long wrist ribbing (3") will cover the gap between your sleeves and your hands, usually missed by most mittens and gloves! From the fuzzy mutli-colored edge to the top of the gloves is 10.25". From the base of the palm to the tip of the thumb is approx. 5".
They're soft and warm and fun and will definitely make you wave your hands in the air!
The pictures don't show the purple well, so you can see the color better here:

The purple is much less blue than the pictures I have!
The purple yarn is 100% Acrylic, and the multicolored poofy yarn is 68% Acrylic/32% Nylon.

Monument Valley is often thought to be US national park, but while its beauty certainly would qualify it for such distinction it is actually a Navajo Nation Tribal Park. It is located at the northern Arizona border with Utah. This photo was taken just outside of the tribal owned View Hotel. The area is a famous setting for numerous western themed movies.
I have previously posted a similar photo that was an HDR taken with my 14-24 mm lens and not stitched. I do like this version better as I think there is much better detail. We were so lucky with the summer cloud formations and their location within the photo. Note the vehicles on the foreground road to provide some size perspective.

Mittens can't wait for the free time he usually gets on the balcony when it is warmer. I am aware of the high Iso. It seems to give a good mood.
Monument Valley, Arizona
When I took this, I assumed I would process this in B&W, though as I fiddled with it, for awhile I thought I'd eventually settle for a color version as the separation between the bluff and sky wasn't what I'd hoped. I kept at it, however, and though never fully satisfied (I seldom am), decided to go with my original vision.
For those not familiar with the area, it straddles the Utah/Arizona border to the extreme southeast/northeast of the respective states, not far from the Four Corners. This is called a "Mitten" for obvious reasons, and is designated "west" to distinguish it from a near mirror image bluff a quarter mile or so east of this. The two together make for a remarkable vista.
I spent a day and 1/2 here, though would have liked to have spent more time. As it was, I shot a truckload of photos.
