The new Disney Store Classic Maleficent 12'' doll is posed next to the 1998 Mattel Great Villains Collection Maleficent 12'' doll. They both have their magic staff and their pet raven Diablo. The Mattel doll is on her custom display stand, so stands about an inch taller than the Disney doll. My review of both dolls is included below.
The new Classic Maleficent doll has been fully deboxed and is posing standing up with her arms outstretched. She is supported by a metal doll stand (not included with the doll). Since this doll is missing her staff and raven, I have added her raven companion Diablo, perched on her magic staff, which she is holding in her left hand. It is from Jim Shore's Maleficent figurine, and fits in well with Disney Store's Classic Maleficent doll.
Review of Classic Maleficent Doll
Her head and face are much more movie accurate than that of the Designer Maleficent, but don't approach the accuracy (and beauty) of the Mattel Great Villains Maleficent doll. She has a head that is considerably larger than the Mattel doll, and it does look too large for her body. Her molded horns are made of hollow black pastic that is glued onto her head. Her 'hood' is a molded part of her head. The horns are missing the purple lines demarking the sections. They have a matte surface, which doesn't look or feel quite as nice as the velvety surface of the Mattel doll's horns and hood. Her head is long and narrow, with a aquiline and very long chin, which is not as pointy as is should be. Her face has the same pale green color as the Mattel doll and movie character. She has narrow beady black eyes with purple eyeshadow from her lids to her arched thin black eyebrows. Her wide mouth has bright red lips and form a scowl. Her overall expression is gloomy, as if she has just heard very disappointing news. I like the Mattel doll's expression much more, which is that of gleeful, smug, evil satisfaction, as if she is just about to vanquish her enemies, which is more in keeping with Maleficent's character. The Mattel doll also has deeper red lips, more like blood red, which I also prefer.
Classic Maleficent has the same body construction as the other 11-12'' dolls in the 2012-2013 Disney Princess Classic Doll Collection, that started with Classic Merida in April 2012. Her skin color is a pale green all over, except for her molded black horns and painted on black panties. She has neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee and ankle joints. Her head is on a ball joint that allows 360 degrees rotation about a horizontal plane, and tilting 10 degrees down, 30 degrees back, and 30 degrees towards the left and right. Perhaps I was a little too forceful testing the tilting of her head for this review, since her right horn started to become unglued from her head. :( This was after these photos were taken. I will have to superglue it back when I get a chance. Her shoulder have ball joints 360 degree rotation in a vertical plane and tilting about 90 degrees from the vertical. Her elbows are also ball joints, that allows 90 degrees tilt inward and 30 degrees outwards. Her wrists are hinge and pivot joints that allow 360 degrees rotation and can tilt 90 degrees backward and 45 degrees forward. Her hips have ball joints that allow rotation about a plane 30 degrees from the vertical, and tilting 30 degrees outward. Her knees are hinge joints that allow tilting 80 degrees backwards and 10 degrees forward. Finally her ankles are hinge/pivot joints like her wrists, allowing 360 rotation, 45 tilt upwards and 80 degrees downwards. She has much more posability than the Mattel Maleficent. She is missing the red painted nails and magic black and gold ring of the movie character and the Mattel doll. Also her green neck is exposed, when it should of be the same color as her horns. The Mattel doll completely covers the neck with a black inner collar.
Her outfit is consists of a dress and a cape, that are sewn together at the left shoulder and connected with a velcro fastener at the right shoulder. It is entirely made of satin, in black or dark magenta, and is removable. The dress is form fitting slinky black satin with a magenta center panel. It has very large sleeves that have saw tooth pattern pointing down (simulating flames), and drape over the arms. They are black on the outside, and magenta inside. The collar is magenta facing forward, and black in the back. The full length cape is black on the outside and magenta on the inside, with sawtooth pattern at the bottom, simulating flames. She has black high heeled shoes, that fit very snuggly on her feet, so I removed the rubber bands that secured the shoes to her feet for shipping. The outfit looks good, but is simplified compared to the one in the movie, or the one on the Mattel Great Villains Maleficent. Also the Mattel doll's outfit has an outer layer of black velvet, which looks and feels much more luxurious than the Disney doll. The Mattel doll also has an inner dress of red satin, and a layer of purple organza in the sleeves and outer collar. However, Mattel doll's outfit is not removable, and it and the doll's construction makes her have only one natural pose - the one that she has in the box.
She has no accessories. So she is missing her magic scepter and her companion raven Diablo, that were included with the Mattel Great Villains version of Maleficent. Without them, the doll looks incomplete, especially in her trademark pose with her arms outstretched.
First look at the newly released Classic Maleficent 12'' doll. Maleficent's look (the doll and her outfit) is based on her appearance in the movie, and is much more movie accurate than the Designer Maleficent doll (September 2011), who was ''re-imagined'' as a fashion doll.
2012-2013 Disney Princess Classic Doll Collection Maleficent 12'' Doll
US Disney Store
$14.50, or 2 for $20
Released in stores December 30, 2012
Purchased in store January 3, 2013
Not yet available online
I went to my local DS on Thursday January 3, 2013 and snagged two of the brand new Classic Villain 12'' Dolls, the Evil Queen and Maleficent. They were just released in some stores this past weekend, and are not yet available online. My store did not have the new Jafar yet, but will get him very soon. I also got Mother Gothel, who is in the new ''Posable Arms and Legs'' package so presumably has the new knee and ankle joints that the 2012 Classic Princess dolls have (first introduced with Classic Merida). The new Evil Queen and Maleficent dolls also have the new leg joints. They were all part of the 2 for $20 Disney Princess Classic Doll sale, even though they are brand new releases. I will post photos of all of them boxed, during their deboxing, and fully deboxed, both alone and with other comparable dolls.

St Peter and St Paul, Algarkirk, Lincolnshire
By now the rain was softening, but the wind was still bitter. From Fosdyke we headed on a few miles down narrow lanes, a vast castle of a church increasingly looming up before us, until we reached the centre of another workaday village and the church of St Peter and St Paul. Locked - but it should have been open. A faded sign said Welcome! This church is open every day from dawn to dusk! but it wasn't. The words 'vast', 'decaying' and 'pile' immediately leapt into order in my mind. An enormous Decorated church with transepts and a solid central tower. The rain was running over the blocked gutters. The wide Dec porch had rusting iron gates locked with a padlock and chain. The porch itself was full of leaves and rubbish - it didn't look as if anyone had been inside here for a very long time. I rang the Rector's number, but got a 'sorry, you have dialled an incorrect number' message. There were no other numbers. But by the magic of smart phones and the internet we found that the church had a website which told us that a) they were in an interregnum, b) they had recently been awarded several million pounds by the Lottery Fund to start the restoration, and c) there was a number to ring for more information. I rang the number, he rang the bloke who should have opened up, and the bloke who should have opened up arrived with a sheepish face and apologised for not opening the church. I fully understood - the lassitude and inertia of the rain-swept Lincolnshire marshes was beginning to settle on me, too.
He unlocked the padlock, unlocked the door, and we stepped in. Well. Rarely have I been so quickly reduced to silence by a church. Blythburgh, Patrington, Salle, they all sprang to mind. But this interior was so sad and vast, the silence and space of its Early English aisles and transepts filled with dust falling in the light from the clerestories. The large Decorated windows of the aisles and transepts were filled with small scenes by Clayton and Bell, but the glass sagged in the leading, in several places broken or missing altogether. Water dripped from the roof in several places. The walls had settled into the soft fen soil, cracks snaking up the uneven stonework, the tracery of the windows starting to disconnect. And yet, and yet...it was an utterly awesome place. John and I just wandered around separately, and I think it must have been a good twenty minutes before either of us spoke. I noticed we were the first names in the visitors book of 2015, so I don't know how often the bloke who does doesn't. Unquestionably the church of the day, and one of the most memorable churches I have visited for several years.
Once the lottery money comes through and they start the restoration, I expect this church will be closed for repairs for a year or more, so if you are impatient for a truly numinous experience, make your way there now, but don't forget your smart phone.
'Cause I got accustomed to meet my dearest friend once a month.
And I really miss our chats, our laughs, our coffees, our fool things, our adventures in the rain just to buy a shoe, our crazyness through the city.
And uncontable thing that I won't be able to name now.
Just to say that I'm here and I'll always be.
♥ you!
Let's keep our fingers crossed....perhaps I'll be able to meet you sooner than you think! [if you didn't get enough of me yet...LOL]
;o)
The view from our flat in the Eastonstraat in Amsterdam Osdorp. This stop has been abandoned since. Grey rolling stock were supposed to be a nono on rapid light rail line 1 but it happened often when not enough yellow liveried stock was available.

There are always people we miss when we make a big move. Relocating to Oregon from So Calif makes me miss several wonderful pals I regularly shared tea with.
As I've been away from Flickr for the last year I've misses my pals here as well. It's good to be back, seeing your stunning artwork and photos.
Thanks for the warm and hearty welcome notes you've sent.

PERSONAL FUN FACT: I admit I was kind of bummed out when I brought this jumper home from the flea market and realized it wasn't part of Mia's collection. Mia, the Girl of the Year 2008, has a snowflake on her "meet" sweater. Likewise, I actually found items from Mia's wardrobe at the same flea market booth. I figured that this was a shot in the dark, but for only one dollar it wasn't a big deal to take the risk. Normally, you'd think that this type of snowy ensemble would be useless without the corresponding unitard. But given the structure of this jumper, it actually works by itself...albeit it doesn't look very wintery though! The fabric of this outfit is that sort of stretchy athletic material found on my Girl of Today Tennis Outfit. The zipper really works...a detail I very much appreciate. You can change up the look of this ensemble, based on how much you zip it up!

PERSONAL FUN FACT: The Bitty Bunch line was one of the frivolities in Bitty Baby's collection. The sets made for Bitty Bear and co. didn't have any practical value other than being mega cute. Therefore, I never actually anticipated that I'd own any of the pieces from the Bitty Bunch collection (other than the animals themselves of course). Despite knowing I didn't want to spend my money or Christmas/birthday gift opportunities on things like the Bitty Bunch Playhouse, I did admire them in the pages of the catalogue. I probably spent too much time in the Bitty Baby section altogether as a kid. That's why I instantaneously recognized this house when I happened upon it at a local thrift store in 2020. It was in September that year when I had to go get my oil changed. It is an adult task I dread...I'm not really sure why getting things done to my Jeep makes me so anxious. But I rewarded myself with a trip to this thrift store on the way home. We usually find at least something in this particular location. In the past, we've actually been lucky enough to come home with Bitty Baby stuff! As we went into the basement of the store and shimmied into the super narrow toy aisle, I spotted this fabric house on one of the shelves. I immediately headed over to it to inspect. Sure enough, there was a tag which stated it was American Girl Bitty Baby, and that it contained TWO of the animals. Colleen and I excitedly began looking inside for the two creatures that were supposed to be there. But we found none...I wasn't going to buy just the house. I relentlessly searched the entire toy section of the basement a dozen times over, hoping to locate the animals. We did end up recovering Bitty Puppy, which prompted me to purchase the house. It was rather filthy when I first brought it home, as to be expected since it is fabric. But a mixture of water and Oxy Clean made it smell/look wonderful again!
Missing the vivid colours even though on this day it threatened to rain and did after a while, it was still warm unlike the cold we are now experiencing. Had to put the heating on yesterday!
