the Rock from La Linea. It was a rainy, most miserable day. Most of the day the Rock was shrouded in clouds.

the Rock has been used in many wars as a strategic point to the entrance of the Mediterraean. The inside of the Rock is full of tunnels, warrooms, living quarters from the last two Wars, and many before that for hundreds of years.

...what else is there to do on a cold miserable day in the school holidays but go to the pool?! Here's William enjoying himself.

Today, the 13th of October, is Molly Pitcher’s birthday. I drove the 14 miles to Monmouth Battlefield with Jersey Shore Fightin’ Texas Aggie Ring ’84 to leave a rose on her memorial next to the stream where she drew the water for the American Artillery soldiers on that hot miserable day of June 28, 1778. According to reports, it was over 100 degrees that day which, in Jersey, is pretty miserable.

Just a taste of that cool fresh water must have been been so wonderful for the artillerymen as she fetched them the water from the stream.

When we arrived at the stream, we were all alone as usual. “Gee,” sadly said Aggie Ring. “You’d think the Artillery could at least have done something for her on her birthday.”

“Aggie Ring!” I said. “You know the Artillery is never there when you need them. If it weren’t for the Ordnance Corps, they wouldn’t even be able to put something as easy as an 8-inch projectile down range. After all, someone needs to run the AFATDS for them or better yet, set up an aiming circle and do the math, old school.”

“I guess you’re right.” said Aggie Ring. “Those Combat Service Support Artillery boys are a bunch of ‘Nancies” anyway. We can do this on our own.”

Aggie Ring had me bring my trumpet for Molly Pitcher’s birthday. Normally, we’d have played “The Army Song,” but today, Aggie Ring and I played the “Caisson Song” for her. Thankfully, it is in the key of B-flat Major. It’s in the same key as the “Aggie War Hymn.”

“Sweet!” said Aggie Ring.

After we finished, Aggie Ring and I drank from Molly’s stream. It was cool and delicious. I can only imagine what it must have been like for her on that hot miserable day of June 28th, back in 1778 when she was bringing water to to the Artillery until her husband fell in battle and she had to man a gun.

You know, there are those songs you get into your head and you can’t stop “singing” them or going over the lyrics. All the way home, Texas Aggie Ring kept singing,

“Then it's hi! hi! hee!

In the Field Artillery,

Shout out your numbers loud and strong,

For where e'er you go,

You will always know

That those caissons go rolling along…”

There’s a sign just down the road from Molly’s stream. It says:

Molly Pitcher - America’s First Heroine.

During the Revolutionary War, on June 28, 1778. A blistering hot day at the Battle of Monmouth. A woman who was with her husband, John Casper Hays, who served in the Pennsylvania Regiment, carried water to the thirsty American soldiers who shouted “MOLLY, Molly Pitcher!” when they needed water.

Through heavy bombardment, Molly carried the water to the parched soldiers during the artillery dual. Her husband was wounded and she immediately helped load and fire the cannon continuing the barrage against the British.

Legend has it that General George Washington commended Molly Pitcher after the battle and commissioned her a sergeant on the battlefield . This seems to be substantiated by the fact that she was given an army pension and buried in her home town with full military honors in 1832.

It took us a half-hour to get through this one intersection. Traffic was so backed up on Canal Street that nobody could turn onto it. So we sat through literally dozens of light changes. Then it still took us another forty minutes to get to the Holland Tunnel. It was the most miserable traffic we had ever sat through.

Sandgate on a wet miserable day

Premade.

From Cambio.

He's looking pretty fine in that outfit, am I right? ;)

Anyways, I love this musical and I really wish I could go over to London and see it, but unfortunately I don't have the amount of money to pay for a ticket to London, let alone a ticket to the show. But I guess I'll just have to make-do with pictures. :)

Comment if taking.

Miserable Minerals.

blogged at For the Love of Brooklyn!

Taken near my apartment in the South Slope. I always walk by these little statues and think they're simultaneously beautiful and hilarious. Such sour expressions on those little cherubims' faces.
