One of the final activities of Jackson-NOLA Fest was sipping mint juleps.

First I made Raspberry Chocolate Brownies, next I made Lemon Chocolate Brownies and now I can add Mint Chocolate Brownies to my list.

The Recipe

American Brownies

- 4 oz butter (110 g)

- 2 oz cooking chocolate

- 2 eggs beaten

- 8 oz granulated sugar (225 g)

- 2 oz plain flour (50 g) sifted

- 1 teaspoon baking powder

- 1/4 teaspoon salt

- 4 oz chopped nuts (110 g). Walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts or mixture

Preheat oven to gas 4 (I have no idea what that means.), 35o degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius).

1. Melt chocolate and butter together (chocolate broken into small pieces) over a double boiler or over a pot of simmering water.

2. Remove from heat and stir all the other ingredients into the butter and chocolate mixture thoroughly then spread in a ____ (I don't know what it says.) tin.

-- I usually break the eggs into the dry ingredients, beat and then add chocolate/butter mixture.

3. Bake for 30 minutes until the mixture shrinks away from sides.

Notes

- This recipe makes enough batter for a 6.5"x10.5" or 5"x7" baking pan (I can't remember which size I used.).

- The second and third time I made this I doubled the recipe and fit all the batter into two" diameter round baking tins.

- I don't add nuts but I have added raspberries, the rinds of two lemons and mint extract to no ill effect.

Baking, science in the kitchen.

Wearing this to listen to a UCL lecture on gravity (did you know they stream lunchtime lectures live? it’s kind of cool), and hopefully drag myself out to the post office and run some other errands. These shoes look strangely clownish; I bought them as cheap flats that I could wear on the way to a party to avoid walking far in stilettos, and felt I ought to wear them more often, but now I’m not so sure they really work.

I like a nice, bright, fresh green...why is why I have this mint plant on my desk instead of a flower or succulent...

Moroccan-style mint tea is now commonly served all through the West Arab World (North Africa). It is served not only at mealtimes but all through the day, and it is especially a drink of hospitality, commonly served whenever there are guests. Unlike Moroccan food, cooked by women, this tea is traditionally a man's affair: prepared by the head of the family. It is served to guests, and it is impolite to refuse it.

My pot of mint survived the winter outside. I picked off the brown woody bits and it's bounced back and ready for mojito season.

A close up of some mints that I got today

Water mint or Mentha aquatica is a perennial flowering plant in the mint family Lamiaceae. It grows in moist places and is native to much of Europe.

Many years ago, I grew different mints for horticultural shows. I managed a collection of over 50 varieties of mint.
