Photographed at the Battery Hill Mine Museum. Tennant Creek has a rich history as a gold mining centre. Here was found one of the richest gold bearing seams ever mined in the world. Very remotely located in central Australian desert country, life was harsh for the people who lived here.

The Otho Mining District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in December 2004. Photographs from nomination, December 2002.

The Otho lode was discovered by Byron Ferguson and William McGarrity on June 4, 1892. It was reportedly named for Otho Ferguson who lived and worked in the area. While Otho was originally developed during the false tin boom in the late 1800s, it persisted and was one of the few areas that actually did produce tin ore after the tin hoax had ended. There may also have been extraction of beryl and feldspar.

The Otho Mining District near Greyhound Creek by Keystone includes the built structures of a bunkhouse, hotel, house, outhouse, and shed from about 1914. The estimated population of Otho in the early 20th century was 200. Some of the miners worked at the Otho Tin Mill, while some worked at other nearby mines. Cooking at the bunkhouse was done by the Ferguson family, and later by Ernest and Minnie Linde.

When the mill closed during a bust period, some miners left at Otho and sought employment where they could find it. However, a core of families stayed on longer and survived the best they could.

Broken Hill is located east of the Simpson Desert in Australia. Silver, lead and zinc were discovered here in vast reserves in the 19th Century and it has been a huge mining centre ever since. The entire city is dominated by mining, mining history, and the legacy of wealth resulting in fine monumental stone buildings in an unlikely desert setting.

These are the crushers. The ore is brought into the mill area and is put into the large SAG(semiautogenous grinding)and then it passes to the smaller crusher (BALL) which will break it down further. The ore slurry is then passed to the flotation tanks

The genus Andrena is a large one with many species superficially like honey bees. Other characteristics are ; 3 sub-marginals and the tongue is small and pointed.

Often known as mining bees because they generally nest in the ground and appear in spring.

This bee is easily recognised by the rich brown thorasic hair and the rather flat shiney blackish - brown abdomen with its golden or reddish brown tip. The male has brown facial hair and the female has white.

One of the earliest of the mining bees, usually seen from march to june on a wide range of flowers, including blackthorn , dandelions and sallow.

The burrows are dug in many open habitats, including parks and garden lawns.

A notice to the employees of the Witherbees, Sherman & Co. announcing that as the "prospects of the Iron buisness get worse and worse" they will either have to "close mines or reduce wages." This poster informed the workers how much their wages would be cut. In 1938, when Republic Steel purchased the Witherbee Sherman mines they raised the wages, making the mining salary one of the best in town.
