As far as I know, this is the only surviving picture of my maternal great grandfather. It is his ID badge from the mining company where he worked.

Tumco (originally Hedges) was a gold mining town in the Cargo Muchachos range founded in the 1870s. For half a century men toiled in this place, dying of exhaustion, starvation, and disease, drowned or crushed in mines and quarries, all for one dollar a day in wages. Today little remains of Tumco save some ruins, derelict mining equipment and a cemetery full of unmarked graves. The site is almost totally silent save for the wind whistling through the jagged Muchachos and the hundreds of tunnels delved into them. This place gave me the creeps.

street mining is pretty simple: once a month a bunch of people get together and go walk the streets. each month is guided by a different person showing off their favorite gems. anyone's invited, so why not come exploring?

A collection of screenshots from the plasma project in Second Life. The place and all art will be deleted on Dec 01, 2008, it is too expensive to pay the Linden Labs' fees to keep it open for public. Its a shame, so many great non-commercial places like this are dying in the moment. They attract users, they are the content. Without such content Second Life is an empty bubble.

The Plasma City project is sponsored by Rezzable. On "The Rock" we have established a community of miners, fugitives, and space scum also known as "The Plasma Space Crew." Our team includes:

Cube Republic - Structures, scenery

Glyph Graves - Structures, sculpties, sound

Judi Newall - PR, publicity

Kitsune Kyomoon - Project coordinator

Lorin Tone - Sound guru, structures, scenery

Madcow Cosmos - Structures, scenery, av's

Across the river on the bank is some mining that is polluting the waters in Puerto Maldonado. To extract the gold they put liquid mercury in the soil and once they are finished they put the excess into the water, the water pollutes the fish, the locals catch and eat the fish, and the locals become ill.

Jerome, Arizona

Jerome is perched on the side of Cleopatra Hill deposits. In 1876, mining claims and a mill were located near the over rich ore town. These claims were purchased in 1882 by the United Verde Company, and the tent camp was named Jerome after Eugene Jerome, a major financier of the company. Senator William Clark of Montana purchased the company in 1883. By the mid 1920s the population had grown to almost 15,000 before it began to decline.

Walking down Main Street is like taking a step back in time. Remnants of the "Red Light District," Company Hill, old hotels, and saloons still exist. Today the population is close to 500. When the mines shut down in the 1950s, the population was below 100. It was then the town became known as a ghost town. However, today it is a thriving destination tourist town and a national historic landmark.

This is the photo of a beermat that I found in a flat that I bought in Nottingham.

Nottingham used to be a big mining area, but most of the mines have now closed.

The Museum is run by a group of volunteers in a microgranite quarry at Threlkeld, with a Geology Room, Bookshop, Underground Experience, Gold Panning, Excavator Display, Engine House and Steam Engine, all there to enjoy together with the Quarry and the views. Also on offer are mine tours and mineral panning.

The quarry itself is a RIGS site and displays contacts between the “Skiddaw Slate” and the granite intrusion, as well as other fascinating features.

Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum have their own narrow gauge railway and “Sir Tom”, a steam locomotive, hauls passengers daily in the summer holidays and on other weekends. In quiet periods one of the collection of vintage classic diesel locos is used.

The primary goal of the coal mining risk assessment is to determine the dangers associated with coal mining at the development site. The Coal Authority acts as a legal consultant for any planning proposal within a High-Risk Zone. Moreover, the coal authority conducts a formal inspection to examine previous data on your site. These analyses can be related to any mining plans, a review of modern and historical published geological maps, and a review of technical reports/memoirs. To learn more about coal mining risk assessment, kindly visit- www.earthenvironmental.co.uk/coal-mining-risk-assessment/

Photographed at the Battery Hill Mine Museum. Tennant Creek has a rich history as a gold mining centre. Here was found one of the richest gold bearing seams ever mined in the world. Very remotely located in central Australian desert country, life was harsh for the people who lived here.

The private mining operation on Cod Fish Creek. At least the Holiday Inn trash can fared well.

Background:

The Applegate Fire broke out on Wednesday, October 8th. As of Sunday, October 12, all evacuations were lifted, which meant, time to check out the Hermit Hut and see how the trail fared.

Assessment

No more poison oak in a lot of places! Secret Trail from railroad tracks to the to the gravel, totally burned out, but passable. There is one large tree across the "goat path". I cut a lot of low hanging branches. Scott Namanny and I moved a lot of downed small trees and slash in a few areas. All in all, it's very ride-able!
