One of the great pleasures of springtime for me is that as the weeks pass by, the season for different species of mining bees starts. After the absence of solitary bees during the winter, it such a pleasure to see them all emerging.
This is my first Ashy Mining Bee (Andrena cineraria) of 2014. This is a male. Notice the slim build, lack of pollen hairs on the hind legs and long white hairs on the face. This species often exhibits a bluish iridescence. This is apparent on the abdomen of this individual.
Many solitary bee species are perfectly happy being handled. When it's a bit chilly, it seems that they enjoy getting some additional warmth. This one took the opportunity for a bit of grooming. Male bees have no sting. Most female solitary bees have weak stings, but rarely use them.
The Black Hills were part of the Great Sioux Reservation, so no local white government was in place. Prospectors followed U.S. tradition, setting up a system of mining districts. A party of miners determined the borders of their district and chose a recorder to register claims. They met as a body to create rules, hold court, and enforce the law. I had my camera on hand for the July 4th parade, and for some reason decided not to shoot the engines, but when this high and wide stuff started showing up mid train, I had to shoot. This equipment looks to be mining machine parts was headed west at Worthington St. in Oconomowoc. July 2004.

A mining bee, appears to be an Andrena species, a very diverse genus. There has been a colony (or aggregation, really) of these bees at this site for at least several years. Along with them are attending brood parasites (such as another bee, Nomada) and various parasitoids. It is in an area of very short grass adjacent to a parking lot. When I first came across it, several years ago, I thought it was an ant colony.
