A mine worker on a visit to her daughter's school in the mining region of Bellary, in southern India
I've posted pictures of this kind of thing before, but the power of hydraulics still gets me every time. In this case what you're looking at are the two hydraulic rams which are used to lift the "box" of the mining truck to dump the material out. Each of the two rams is approximately the same thickness as my thigh and tapers down to about the same thickness as my lower leg. Maybe this doesn't blow your mind, but imagine holding up 150-200 tons of material with just your legs. Compare this to the rams on the CAT 793 haul trucks I posted about before which are about the thickness of my chest and carry around 240 tons nominal.
Mining Benefits Fail to 'Trickle Down'
(IPS) With South-South trade on the rise and growth in emerging economies set to outstrip production in industrialised countries, the international mining sector has been quick to follow global trends.

Mining started during the mid 1600s in this area and went on up to the beginning of the 1900s.
One can certainly imagine the hardships of mining here in such a remote area. Apparently, they mined from March up to October.

To Eckley came a succession of immigrant groups seeking economic opportunities and religious or political freedom.
English, Welsh, and German miners were supplanted by the Irish immigrants and then by southern and eastern Europeans. These groups formed an ethnic mosaic typical of the anthracite region.
After the WPPI show, I headed into the Mojave Desert hills. I was looking for the Evening Star mine and a place to stay for the night.
Got here just as the sun was setting.

Photographed at the Battery Hill Mine Museum. Tennant Creek has a rich history as a gold mining centre. Here was found one of the richest gold bearing seams ever mined in the world. Very remotely located in central Australian desert country, life was harsh for the people who lived here.
Nationalisation of coal mining in 1947 resulted in a great many changes for the industry. Improvements in safety were marked. To take just one case, there was a near universal provision of spark-proofed electric lamps - and the development of an infrastructure to maintain them.
This is an assemblage of three accumulators or chargeable batteries. Each comprises two linked cells in metal containers with a number of contacts and a current bridge mounted on top.
The problem of lighting colliers' workspaces persisted for centuries. Naked flame was dangerous, but was the only option until the development of masked safety lamps in the nineteenth century. By the 20th century electric lights had been developed but the existing private companies seldom invested in the technology.
