"Written documents show that mining of bedrock iron ore and processing of pig iron in a charcoal blast furnace were already in progress over 600 years ago.
Within the premises of Pershyttan, we can, among others, find the old mines of SlihƤlle, SkƤgge and Lockgruvan. These mines were probably in use already in the middle of the 12:th century. The production was stopped in 1909.
There are today archaeological evidences, based on carbon-dating, showing that the minefield of Lockgruvan has delivered iron ore to one of the oldest blast furnaces in the region, Alntorpshyttan.
In Pershyttan the blast furnace was the heart of the village and the mines were situated close by. Over the centuries many generations of blast furnaces have been erected more or less at the same spot. The, probably, last and present blast furnace was built in 1856 and was finally closed down in 1953.
It is a unique establishment and one of, if not, the best-preserved charcoal blast furnace in Europe . Inside the building you can still find most of the technical installations in place from the last 100 years of production and it gives you a good idea how pig iron was produced in the old days.
A large number of similar furnaces have been in operation over the centuries in this mid-south Sweden region called "Bergslagen", but Pershyttan is one of the few still standing.
The last iron ore mine in Pershyttan closed down in 1967. Hundreds and hundreds of mines, today most of them water filled, still remind us of the impact that this early industry had on this region.
In Pershyttan you can still have a good view of this historical industrial and cultural environment. Not only the mines, the blast furnace, the slag-heaps you can also see old energy supply equipments based on waterwheel power. Buildings for various purposes and cottages, farms and manor houses earlier belonging to the peasant iron miner and the owners of the mines and the blast furnace, the so called "BergsmƤnnen".
Pershyttan is today a complete mine and blast furnace-village based on the ownership of the "bergsmƤnnen" in clear contrast to a company-owned village environment. This is unique and the whole village is today protected as a cultural heritage and as a national culture park.
Pershyttan together with the town of Nora and the Nora Bergslags Veteran Railway was awarded the international Europe Nostra award in 1993 for cultural building and heritage preservation."
A nice collectors item originating from the 1860's - constructed from brass. Used for both magnetic and azimuth surveys with internal & external verniers. In my time as a trainee mining surveyor this was the first instrument I was allowed to get my sticky fingers on.
