Getting set up on the long-distance range. Obviously this requires a consensus from all shooters to stop. Often times when one group wants to set up, the other group will go update their targets too, so as to minimize interruptions to everybody. I did not realize they actually sold bullet-sized black stickers for you to stick over the holes in your targets, so you don't have to go through targets as fast.
If you zoom in REALLY closely on the top right of the hill closest to the camera, you can see Matthew's small metal spinner targets, which are fun to shoot at from 10 feet away with powderless Colibri rounds, and even more fun to shoot at using the sniper rifle scope -- I got 'em all in one try. I almost tried with our gun, but was told my .380 ammo would destroy the target, which was only made for .22s. Plus it turns out I can't hit ANYTHING at 25 yards with my gun anyway. This isn't really where one would try to use handguns, anyway. But I did burn $1.50 trying 5 shots at the white cardboard in front of the first hill in the center. 0 out of 5 successful hits. Clearly our gun is for shooting someone across the room, not someone across a field. Shouldn't be a problem inside our house, though.

City Hall is the home of the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. It was designed by Foster + Partners and stands at 45 meters high. It's one of the most "green" buildings to grace London, with solar panels on the roof and a shape that minimizes the energy needed to power and cool the building.

This is a section of one-lane road that winds through the forest. The lanes split in order to minimize the impact on the surrounding environment.
----------------------------------
Probably the best drive in the Black Hills is Iron Mountain Road which is Route 16A between Keystone and Custer. We rode the portion that extends from Route 244 south to the entrance of the Wildlife Loop Road in Custer State Park. It ranges from gorgeous sweeping vistas to twisty treacherous hairpin turns.
This is also part of the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway. This particular section is called the Peter Norbeck Memorial Byway and at its highest point is a small memorial to the governor whose vision and perseverance brought us this magnificent road and all its quirky features.
There are three one-lane tunnels on this portion of Iron Mountain Road, all of which afford a spectacular view of Mount Rushmore as you pass through (depending on which direction you are going, you either see it in front of you as you pass through, or look behind you to see it) They were designed and blasted to frame the faces as you pass through, and they even keep paths cleared through the trees so that nothing obstructs the view of it.
Iron Mountain Road is also home to three pigtail bridges. These are bridges that curve around and go under themselves. When Peter Norbeck first envisioned a highway going through the Black Hills, he was committed to having as little impact as possible on the environment. A pigtail bridge is a particular form of spiral bridge, first built for Iron Mountain Road. Its purpose is to allow for the road to negotiate sudden changes in elevation while minimizing the impact on the surrounding environment. Several of these bridges are located at the entrance/exit of one lane tunnels, which makes for a spectacular ride. They were built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps and constructed of natural materials such as local lumber. They were expensive...and well worth it.
The third distinctive feature of Iron Mountain Road is its sections of divided roadway - where the two lanes split and you drive on a narrow one-lane section. This, again, was done because of Norbeck's insistence that the road have as little impact as possible on the environment and natural beauty.

A once top-secret intelligence memo recently declassified by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA) and reviewed by Circa shows roughly ten pages listing hundreds of violations by the FBI of their privacy-protecting minimization rules while James Comey was director. The FISA report was in direct contradiction to Comey’s testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee.
During a round of questions about securing and defending the privacy of American citizens, Comey stated under oath that his agency used collected surveillance data from Americans without a warrant. Director Comey then continued that this use of data was to be only when it was “lawfully collected, carefully overseen and checked.” In order to further cement the appearance of his agency’s commitment to uphold citizen’s privacy, Comey added, “Nobody gets to see FISA information of any kind unless they’ve had the appropriate training and have the appropriate oversight.”
This FISA report shows clearly that James Comey was lying during his testimony and that he should be criminally charged.
Among the violations declassified in the FISA report are examples of the FBI sharing data illegally with third parties, including a ‘private entity’ with no legal right to access the information. Comey’s FBI also gathered protected attorney client communications that had been intercepted without using the oversight procedures he claimed were of the highest importance.
The spying, done illegally on Trump and thousands of other Americans was not only a gross abuse of power unmatched in recent memory, but a serious assault on the 4th Amendment which guarantees the rights of all Americans against unlawful search and seizure.
The American Civil Liberties Union said that newly disclosed violations are some of the most serious to ever be documented. To give a brief rundown of these violations we need look no further than rank and file members of the intelligence community. Here is what they told FOX NEWS.
1) Surveillance targeting the Trump team during the Obama administration began long ago, even before the president had become the GOP nominee in July.
2) The spying on the Trump team had nothing to do with the collection of foreign intelligence or an investigation into Russia election interference.
3) The spying was done purely “for political purposes” that “have nothing to do with national security and everything to do with hurting and embarrassing Trump and his team.”
4) The person who did the unmasking was someone “very well known, very high up, very senior in the intelligence world, and is not in the FBI.”
5) Congressional investigators know the name of at least one person who was unmasking names.
6) The initial surveillance on the Trump team led to “a number of names” being unmasked.
For an American citizen to be “unmasked” in an intelligence report is extremely rare. Usually the person is a suspect in a crime, is in danger or whose name has to be revealed to explain the context of a report. The members of Trump’s transition team who were unmasked, were not linked with any intelligence about Russia, were not in danger or suspects of a crime.
After nearly one year of constant accusations and investigations that are costing the taxpayers millions of dollars, there is nothing to support a Trump/ Russia collusion. The real collusion is the one that has been nearly buried under the weight of the 24-hour reporting of fake news by America’s mainstream media. The collusion is between Obama, his administration, James Comey, British Intelligence, the NSA and the FBI for the purpose of spying on Trump and his transition team for political gain.
The FISA report disclosed massive data gathering of Americans using Section 702 of the Foreign Surveillance Act. Section 702 allows the FBI access (without a warrant) of U.S. citizen’s communications with ‘foreign targets’ that have been collected by the NSA. Without proper justification for using the 702 law, the FBI cannot conduct surveillance or collect data on Americans. Section 702 is up for renewal this year. All of these safeguards were ignored by Comey’s FBI.
Amy Jeffress, the former top security adviser to former Attorney General Eric Holder was appointed by FISA in 2015 to give an independent review of the FBI’s record of compliance. Jeffress came to the conclusion that FBI searches of NSA data extended far beyond national security issues.
In other revelations Accuracy In Media reported that a source for The British Guardian now admitted that British spy agency GCHQ had been digitally wiretapping Trump associates as far back as 2015.
With the approval of then CIA Director John Brennan, computerized espionage was used against Trump and people he worked with for political purposes. A total of six U.S. intelligence agencies were involved in the formation of a task force to investigate the Trump associates during the campaign. The task force was made up of CIA, NSA, FBI, Justice Department’s National Security Division, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Unit. CIA boss Brennan initiated this illegal domestic operation against the Trump campaign.
The Russian collusion charge was just a smoke screen to hide a deeper, darker action; to break Trump’s back and bring victory to the Witch of Washington, Hillary Clinton.
Judicial Watch announced that it had failed in its efforts to get information about why White House adviser Susan Rice ordered the “unmasking” of Trump campaign officials in classified reports.
The House Intelligence Committee issued subpoenas to determine if the unmasking was politically motivated. One step ahead, the National Security Council had sent all those records to Obama’s presidential library, where they can’t be released for five years. Those records contained evidence of intelligence abuses and cover ups by Rice, Brennan, former Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Power and others in the Obama White House.
There have been comparisons made of Trump and Watergate but when one considers that Nixon’s presidency started to unravel by the discovery of the bugging of his political rivals, we can see that Obama went far beyond a simple phone tapping.
The silver tongued Obama deliberately exploited our domestic and foreign intelligence gathering agencies to spy on his political opponents. He did this on a massive scale. Obama was to have paved the way for a democratic win in 2016.
Yet it wasn’t just about Trump. In an analysis published by Tablet magazine, Lee Smith wrote “At some point, the (Obama) administration weaponized the NSA’s legitimate monitoring of communications of foreign officials to stay one step ahead of domestic political opponents,” says a pro-Israel political operative who was deeply involved in the day-to-day fight over the Iran Deal. “The NSA’s collections of foreigners became a means of gathering real-time intelligence on Americans engaged in perfectly legitimate political activism — activism, due to the nature of the issue, that naturally involved conversations with foreigners..” Trump wasn’t the first target.
The Obama spying scandal includes the Iran deal. In December 2015, the Wall Street Journal revealed that the Obama administration used the NSA to cast a wide net of surveillance around Israeli officials and diplomats, as well as American lawmakers who were friendly towards Israel as well as Jewish-American groups.
According to an investigative piece by National Review, “ the administration’s targeting of journalists, including (a) attorney general Eric Holder’s approval of the seizure of personal and business phone records of Associated Press reporters en masse (i.e., not a particularized search targeting a specific journalist suspected of wrongdoing); and (b) Holder’s approval of a warrant targeting the e-mails of Fox News reporter James Rosen in a leak investigation — based on an application in which the government represented to a federal court that the journalist could be guilty of a felony violation of the Espionage Act in connection with a leak of classified information (in addition to purportedly being a “flight risk”).” More from the National Review article…
“The CIA’s accessing of Senate Intelligence Committee computers and staff e-mails — which CIA director John Brennan initially denied, then apologized for after it was confirmed by an inspector-general report. The investigation of Trump associate Carter Page, including a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant based on the claim that Page was a Russian agent, which would have authorized monitoring of Page’s communications — including any with Trump, then the Republican nominee for president. The criminal leaking to the media of former Trump national-security adviser Michael Flynn’s communications with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. The “unmasking” of identities of Americans (connected to Trump) at the behest of Obama national-security adviser Susan Rice, a White House staffer and Obama confidant. The promulgation in the last days of Obama’s presidency of new rules enabling the spreading of raw intelligence, including “unmasked” American identities, across the 17-agency U.S. “intelligence community” — which significantly increased the likelihood of leaks. At the same time, according to former Obama Defense Department official Evelyn Farkas, current and former Obama officials were encouraging the transmission of information regarding Trump and his associates to Capitol Hill, further magnifying the potential for leaking.”
What we have is the collusion of an outgoing president with various intelligence agencies and their directors to spy not only on thousands of Americans illegally, but to spy on the Trump campaign, leak information, create a false narrative, and hopefully destroy Mr. Trump’s campaign. Who needs the Russians to thwart our democracy? We had Obama!
The conspirators need to be formerly charged with crimes of treason. Obama, Brennan, Comey, Rice, and a host of others need to be publicly denounced, indicted, made to testify before a new and real congressional investigation and exposed for the criminals they are.
The FISA report is just the tip of the iceberg. Let’s not forget to indict Loretta Lynch, Huma Abedin, John Podesta…the list is so long.

These safety lamps were used around 1815 to 1930s. They were much safer than oil lamps and carbide lamps as the open flame was enclosed to minimize chances of igniting gasses. While good for testing for gasses, safety lamps gave off a less bright light and could not be worn on a helmet, which made the miners less efficient. Their best use was for burning off methane gas in mines. These models have mesh inside enclosing and cooling the flame, glass enclosure around the flame for letting the light through and a metal bonnet which protects the flame from drafts.

Long Beach Airport has very little passenger service compared with the dominant Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) approximately 18 miles (29 km) to the northwest, and will always remain a relatively small airport because of restrictive ordinances adopted to minimize noise in the residential neighborhoods near LGB. The airport is under one of the strictest ordinances in the United States on both airport noise and the number of commercial flights. The current noise levels allow for 41 daily commercial flights and 25 commuter flights. Local community groups and activists are very vocal about any changes at the airport.
At the same time, the arrival of low-cost carrier JetBlue Airways at Long Beach Airport in 2001, and that airline's decision to establish a West Coast hub at LGB, has substantially increased the air traffic to the airport and has cemented LGB's standing as a viable alternative to LAX for flights from the Los Angeles area to major East Coast cities. While JetBlue used the local noise ordinance to turn Long Beach Airport into a miniature fortress hub, it quickly reached maximum capacity and has since been forced to rework flight schedules and direct future growth to other Los Angeles area airports. JetBlue calls LGB a Focus city and now operates 31 of the 41 slots.
Air cargo carriers, including FedEx and UPS, also maintain operations out of LGB. 57,000 tons of goods are transported each year.
The Boeing Company (formerly McDonnell Douglas) maintains production of the C-17 military transport jet; maintenance facilities for other Boeing and McDonnell Douglas/Douglas aircraft (including the historic DC-9 and DC-10 aircraft) are also found at Long Beach Airport. Gulfstream Aerospace also has a completion/service center at the airport.
Although commercial flights are severely restricted, there are still a large number of flights at the airport from charter flights, private aviation, flight schools, law enforcement flights, helicopters, advertising blimps, planes towing advertising banners, etc. Because of that, Long Beach airport is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world, with 398,433 aircraft movements in 2007.[6]
Long Beach Airport has a single terminal. It is notable for its Streamline Moderne style of architecture and is a historical landmark. Because of the age and limited size of the current terminal, changes—including a possible addition—are currently on-going.
The final result will look like this. It only takes about 30 minutes to accomplish and is well worth the effort.
Gonna stock up and hopefully minimize (as best I can) my exposure to shortages. You should be doing the same.
20230404 Update - Got a good deal on some Wavian cans with spouts recently. Grabbed 2 so increased my truck's capacity to 15 gallons or 3/5 of the tank's capacity (26 gallons). So will now have 41 gallons total (est. 943 miles range) in the event we need to skedaddle.
This front loaded home has an excellent setback for the garage minimizing the impact of parking and curb cuts on walkability. The cross walk feeds right into the driveway creating a slightly uncomfortable conflict. It does reduce the cost of providing handicap access to the crossing. The utilities are buried which saves the street trees from being hacked away by the power company. Note the ugly utility box on the right. Even with all this good design rear loading is just better.

After Slides, Urban Forestry Picks Up the Pieces
Healthy trees can minimize surface erosion and stabilize soils. During prolonged periods of heavy rain, soil properties on steep slopes and other areas can change to such a degree that even healthy trees can uproot. Trees may also be part of larger slides which affect all or portions of the soil the tree has depended upon for its stability. When SDOT Urban Forestry is called to assist in the investigation and clean up of slides that involve trees, several conditions must be considered and addressed before clean up can begin. Often slides present trees in various conditions; some have completely fallen and others have exposed roots and may be leaning precipitously. The real challenge is determining which trees around the edges of the slide remain stable. This requires careful consideration by arborists, geotechnical experts, and safety managers to ensure that the site is safe for clean-up activities as well as the public.
Once these important decisions are made and the site is determined safe for employees, Urban Forestry and Street Maintenance crews coordinate debris removal and traffic control. Urban Forestry utilizes ropes, pulleys, hydraulic winches, aerial lifts, chainsaws, climbers and ground personnel to remove fallen and leaning trees. Further work usually involves moving the tree debris down-slope so that it is accessible to heavy equipment. The Safety Office helps maintain communication between teams and monitors site conditions.

The Poll Tax Repealer was the national newsletter of the National Committee to Abolish the Poll Tax (founded in 1941 and disbanded in 1948).
The image is the front page of the August 1946 issue. Available issues date from 1943-46.
Poll taxes (a tax levied when voting in an election) were imposed in many U.S. Southern states as one of several methods to minimize African American voters. Laws typically excluded from the tax anyone whose father and/or grandfather, had voted prior to the Civil War—assuring that nearly all African Americans were subject to the tax and most white Southerners were not.
The Committee pulled together a broad coalition of liberals, civil rights organizations and left wing groups like the Socialist Party and Communist Party.. The campaign had some success at the local level as some states repealed their poll tax, including Georgia in 1945.
Local resident Virginia Foster Durr headed the National Committee to Abolish the Poll Tax in the mid and late 1940s.
She also ran for governor of Virginia on the Progressive Party ticket in 1948. Her husband Clifford defended government workers charged with violating the U.S. ban on communists employed by the federal system. They were viciously red-baited, but after re-locating to Birmingham, assisted Rosa Parks and the bus boycott in Montgomery, Al. 1955-56.
The civil rights movement wasn’t successful at ending the tax until the 24thAmendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1964. Poll taxes in state elections were outlawed by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1966

Safety First!
Pre-Flight checklists are very important in full scale airplaneflying, to ensure that pilots conduct a review of aircraft systems and or procedures prior to each flight. There are a zillion things that could go wrong during a flight. It is critical that you check everything humanly possible to minimize the risk of crashing your airplane.
The recent posts here are around the air plane, so this page today is contains a list of the most common Pre-flight checks for RC airplane. If you follow these checklist closely before each flight, you should be in good shape.
Frequency
If you're flying at a club and have a 72 MHz radio system, you need to make sure that your frequency is free before turning on your radio! Follow your club's pre-flight instructions for obtaining the frequency pin.
Radio Range Check
A range check is a very important pre-flight check that should be done before the first flight of each day at the flying field. Follow the procedure in your radio’s manual for doing a range check. Some radios require a slightly different procedure than others but all are similar to the following.
It's helpful if someone holds the transmitter for you. Turn on thetransmitter, then the receiver. Leave the antenna fully collapsed. While holding the airplane, slowly walk away from the transmitter until the servos begin to twitch violently. With a PCM radio, the servos will stop moving all together. If this distance is farther than 100 ft then you are good to go! If it is less than 100ft do NOT fly! You must determine what the problem is and correct it before flying.
Check the Balance
Your should always balance your RC airplane before coming to the flying field. However, it is always a good idea to check the forward/backward balance one more time before the first flight of each day. Remember that the fuel tank must be empty when checking the balance.
Check the Bolts
The engine vibrations during flight sometimes cause bolts to vibrate loose. Make sure the bolts holding the wing to the fuselage are in place and are tight. Make sure all engine/motor mounting bolts are tight. Also make sure the propeller nut is tight.
Control Surfaces
With your radio system on, make sure the control surfaces are moving correctly with each stick movement of the transmitter. Make sure all control surfaces are secured firmly. Sometimes CA hinges can work themselves loose.Make sure all snap links are closed on the control horn clevises. You may also want to cut a small piece of fuel tubing to stretch over the snap link to keep it from coming apart in flight. Make sure all the servo horns and firmly attached to the control surfaces. Make sure the screw holding the servo horns to the servos are in place and tight.
Battery Levels
Make sure the voltage of the transmitter and receiver batteries are acceptable levels before flying. Follow the recommendations in the radio manual for minimum charge requirements. Failure to perform this pre-flight check before every flight could result in a pile of twisted balsa!
Engine
Be sure the engine is properly tuned before taking off. It's a good idea to hold your airplane vertically with the nose upward while running your engine at full throttle to make sure it will run when in this position while in the air. Also make sure you hear the fuel clunk moving freely when shaking the airplane. Some times during a rough landing the fuel clunk can get flung towards the front of the tank and get stuck. This is sure to cause a dead stick landing.
Antenna Extended
Always double check to make sure your antenna is fully extended! It sound silly, but many times people actually forget to extend the antenna. Yep, I’ve even done it myself!
There Many RC club carry out their checklist to ensure safety, and some senior pilot will personally guide your flight, But just remember, anything could go wrong... The key is to expect the unexpected!
Another Santa Monica garden minimizes color by featuring the dark beauty of Agonis flexuosa 'After Dark' against cool gray architecture and hardscaping. This cultivar is an Australian native tree with narrow, blackish burgundy leaves. Contrast this garden to how another 'After Dark' cools a more vibrant landscape.
Even before the Korean War broke out in 1950, the US Air Force had been planning for a jet-powered replacement of the B-26 Marauder and A-26 Invader. Korea only exacerbated the need for a new aircraft, and the USAF issued a requirement for a new tactical bomber in late 1950, with the stipulation that it had to be based on an existing design to minimize production delays. Three American designs were considered—the North American AJ-1 Savage and B-45 Tornado, and the completely new Martin XB-51. So pressing was the need that the USAF included, in a rare move, foreign aircraft as well—a modified Avro Canada CF-100 Canuck, and the English Electric Canberra B.2. The Canberra, to the surprise of everyone involved, won the competition easily. The USAF did have misgivings about the design, especially the fact that the bombardier sat behind the cockpit, completely enclosed in the fuselage, but its performance was what won the competition: the Canberra had been designed to replace the deHavilland Mosquito and had the speed and maneuverability to match.
The problem was, English Electric was a small startup company and could barely supply the British Royal Air Force with its Canberras, let alone the much larger USAF. To solve the problem, Martin Aircraft was awarded a contract to build the Canberra as the B-57.
Though the initial batch of B-57As were basically identical to the Canberra B.2, aside from upgraded engines and the deletion of the navigator station, the B-57B was to be fundamentally different and more in line of what the USAF intended. The B-57B had a completely redesigned forward fuselage, eliminating the clear navigator nose and wide side-by-side seating of the Canberra B.2, and replacing it with tandem seating, with the now-combined bombardier/navigator sitting behind the pilot. The Canberra B.2 had been unarmed, but the B-57B could either carry eight machine guns or four 20mm cannon in an underfuselage tray. The internal bomb bay of the Canberra was replaced with a rotary-type developed for the XB-51, which would rotate to expose the bomb load on the target run, enhancing the aerodynamics of the aircraft. USAF B-57Bs entered service in June 1954, replacing the A-26 in the night attack role.
Soon after it entered service, however, the USAF began to question its new bomber’s capabilities. The Canberra had been fast enough when it was designed in the late 1940s, but technology had moved so quickly that it was now vulnerable to surface-to-air missiles. With this in mind, the USAF resolved to replace the B-57 in tactical bomber units with F-100 Super Sabres and delete the entire night interdiction role.
Vietnam was to give the Canberra a temporary stay in retirement. Though it could be a tough aircraft to fly, it was a stable platform, and in the comparatively low threat skies of South Vietnam, its slow speed was more of a help than a detriment. It could carry a heavy bombload, and it was accurate; B-57s were especially deadly over the Ho Chi Minh Trail against enemy trucks. This accuracy made it a welcome sight to troops in contact, but as Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops increased their antiaircraft capabilities, B-57s began to take heavier losses. Over half the Canberras sent to Vietnam would be shot down. A number were developed into special operations aircraft, such as the RB-57E Patricia Lynn and B-57G Tropic Moon III. The Royal Australian Air Force also flew their own British-version Canberras over Vietnam.
Vietnam would be the B-57's swan song. The survivors were converted to electronic warfare training EB-57s, and these lasted in service until 1983. A few massively modified WB-57Fs atmospheric research aircraft remain in service with NASA.
Since the Canberra was a stable platform with good aerodynamics, it was well suited for the target-towing role, and Martin subsequently built 68 B-57Es. These were identical to the B-57B, but lacked armament, with target-towing equipment carried in the former bomb bay. The bomb bay was also armored (in case a towing cable should break, which would potentially slice the aircraft in half), and the controls boosted to make the E easier to fly. As missiles replaced rockets and guns in USAF service, however, the B-57E found itself without a mission. The surviving aircraft were then converted to EB-57Es, with all target-towing equipment deleted and replaced with ECM equipment. The job of the EB-57E was to test USAF radar sites and act as electronic aggressors, simulating Soviet bomber attacks. Initially assigned to Air Defense Command, these EB-57s were passed on to the Vermont ANG before being retired in 1982. Of the 50 or so EB-57s in service, six remain today in museums.
52-1526 was originally built as a B-57B, and assigned to the 345th Tactical Bombardment Wing at Langley AFB, Virginia. In 1968, it was converted to an EB-57B, and went to the 4713th Defense Systems Evaluation Squadron at Westover AFB, Massachusetts. With the active duty EB-57s squadrons being deactivated, in 1977 it was transferred to the 117th DSES (Kansas ANG) at Forbes Field, where it was retired in 1978. 52-1526 was then placed on display at Beale AFB, California as part of their airpark, but since it had never flown from Beale, the USAF returned the aircraft to Forbes Field sometime in the 1990s. It was repainted in its 117th DSES colors and placed on display as a gate guard for the Kansas National Guard Museum.
As a kid, I used to see EB-57s fly around all the time from Malmstrom AFB in Montana, so it's always a pleasure to see one of these colorful and unsung birds.

Minimizing the Probability of Lifetime Drawdown under Constant Consumption. Angoshtari, Bayraktar, Young arxiv.org/abs/1507.08713 #q-fin
The German Me 163, a rocket-powered defensive fighter, was one of the most unusual aircraft of World War II. Fortunately, its potential impact was minimized by technical problems and the small number produced.
The Me 163 was the end result of a long line of tailless research aircraft designed by Dr. Alexander Lippisch. The first Me 163A prototypes were tested in 1941, but powered flight testing of the more advanced Me 163B was delayed until August 1943 due to engine and fuel problems. Although the Komet's rocket engine gave it a exceptional climb rate, range was severely limited by its high fuel consumption. Furthermore, the fuels used were extremely hazardous and sometimes exploded without warning, killing a number of pilots.
Production Me 163Bs were not ready for operational use until July 1944. The Luftwaffe planned to have small units of Komets dispersed to intercept Allied bomber formations, but only 279 Me 163Bs were delivered by the end of the war. The sole operational Komet group, JG 400, scored nine kills while losing 14 of its own aircraft.
This Me 163B (S/N 191095) may have been sabotaged while under construction, perhaps by the forced laborers building it in Germany. A small stone was wedged between the fuselage fuel tank and a supporting strap (which could have eventually caused a dangerous fuel leak), and there was contaminated glue in the wing structure (which could have caused a failure of the wing in flight).
Inside the aircraft's skin are these words, perhaps written by a defiant French laborer: "Manufacture Ferme" means "Plant Closed." "Mon coeur est en chomage" translated directly means "My heart is not occupied" (as opposed to France being occupied by the Germans).
The aircraft on display was owned and restored by the Canadian National Aviation Museum and acquired by the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in 1999.
