Another blood moon coming, which makes four in the last two years, completing the lunar tetrad and providing yet another reason to anticipate the apocalypse. (There sure are a lot of them, no?) And in addition to that, it is also another "super moon" which is becoming as common as Republican presidential candidates. Add an eclipse and what we have scheduled for Sunday is a "super blood moon total eclipse." What's going on with all this lunacy?
I, for one, am a little nervous and, thus, posting this in advance of tomorrow's event. Who knows? Maybe even Flickr would not survive the end of days. Fortunately, the forecast is for clouds here which I believe eliminates or at least minimizes serious destruction and devastation. For those without such protection, I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope to at least hear from you on Monday.

Pristine nature refers to natural environments that are in their original, undisturbed state, free from human influence and development. These environments may include untouched forests, unspoiled beaches, clear waterways, and other natural habitats that have not been impacted by human activity.
Pristine nature is important because it supports biodiversity and provides critical ecosystem services, such as clean air, water, and soil. These natural environments also have significant cultural and aesthetic value, providing opportunities for outdoor recreation, tourism, and scientific research.
Unfortunately, pristine nature is becoming increasingly rare due to human activity, including habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change. It is important that we take steps to protect and conserve these environments for future generations to enjoy and benefit from. This may involve creating protected areas, reducing our carbon footprint, and supporting sustainable practices that minimize harm to the natural world.

Black-throated Sparrow was a lifer for me. It was awesome to see this beautiful lone adult at the State Park. As much as it seemed to be very capable of nimbly hopping from cactus to cactus, it was amusing to see it perching on them one footed, as if to minimize the chances of being pricked by one of their sharp needles.
The black tear marks that begin from the corner of the eye and run down the sides of their face from their nose down to their mouths are a unique feature has big benefits for cheetahs. These markings play an important role for by reflecting the glare of the sun while hunting. They are especially helpful in open plains where the glare of the sun is extremely bright. In addition, by minimizing glare, Cheetah can remain focused on moving prey during what is usually a very high-speed chase.
The Ol Pejeta Conservancy is 90000 acres of open savannah grassland, and has the richest diversity of wildlife in kenya outside of the Maasai Mara. It is situated on the equator west of Nanyuki, between the foothills of the Aberdares and Mount Kenya. The Conservancy is host to the "Big five game" among a large selection of other African animals, which makes it a popular safari destination.

Warm blooded animals naturally increase their metabolic activity by shivering to maintain body temperature when it is cold. The arctic fox is so well adapted to life in the arctic that they don't shiver until the temperature drops below minus 70 degrees Celsius!
In fact, the arctic fox has the best insulating fur of all. Other adaptations include fur on the bottom of their feet and a rounder body shape than other foxes, which reduces their surface area to volume ratio to minimize heat loss.

Ticks are small, parasitic arachnids that can carry and transmit various diseases to humans and animals. Some common diseases associated with ticks include:
1. Lyme Disease: It is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted primarily by the black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis) in North America. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, muscle and joint aches, and a characteristic skin rash.
2. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF): It is caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii and is transmitted by the American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) and the Rocky Mountain wood tick (Dermacentor andersoni). Symptoms include high fever, headache, rash, and muscle aches.
3. Babesiosis: It is caused by microscopic parasites of the Babesia family and is transmitted primarily by the black-legged tick. Symptoms may include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, and anemia.
4. Ehrlichiosis: It is caused by bacteria of the Ehrlichia family and is transmitted by the Lone Star tick (Amblyomma americanum) and the black-legged tick. Symptoms may include fever, headache, fatigue, and muscle aches.
To avoid tick-borne diseases, consider the following preventive measures:
1. Wear protective clothing: When venturing into tick-prone areas like forests or grassy areas, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. Tuck pants into socks and opt for light-colored clothing to spot ticks easily.
2. Use tick repellents: Apply an EPA-approved insect repellent containing DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) or picaridin on exposed skin. Permethrin-based repellents can be used on clothing, shoes, and camping gear to repel ticks.
3. Perform regular tick checks: After spending time outdoors, thoroughly check your body for ticks. Pay close attention to areas such as the scalp, behind the ears, underarms, groin, and the back of the knees. Promptly remove any attached ticks using tweezers, grasping them as close to the skin's surface as possible.
4. Create a tick-safe environment: Keep lawns and outdoor recreational areas well-maintained. Clear leaf litter, tall grasses, and brush around your home to minimize tick habitats. Consider using tick control products or seek professional pest control services if necessary.
5. Check pets and gear: Pets can carry ticks indoors, so ensure regular tick checks and appropriate tick prevention measures for your pets. Examine camping gear, backpacks, and other outdoor equipment for ticks before bringing them indoors.
Remember, early detection and proper removal of ticks can reduce the risk of contracting tick-borne diseases. If you develop symptoms after a tick bite, seek medical attention promptly and inform your healthcare provider about the exposure to ticks.

Last weekend was the beginning of a new moon, so I decided to run up to Joshua Tree and spend the day exploring the most popular tourist attractions and the night running around the park making photos.
This is the Ancient Juniper which sits next to balanced rock across from Jumbo Rocks Campground. I tried a composition that included both the juniper and the rock but the light pollution in that direction is horrendous. I'm now trying to figure out what time of year the city of Palm Springs has the least amount of lights on. I have noticed that the Light pollution there has increased noticeably since the eighties. Let just hope the International Dark-Sky Association along with everyones participation can do something to help minimize light pollution. :)
I have never shot a star trail before this and have up till this point done everything I can to prevent star stretch. And I have always felt uncomfortable at the thought of leaving my shutter open for an hour or more. Then I heard about a program called StarStax which allows you to shoot a series of shorter exposures and combine the result into one photo. I read that to get a circle you need to point your camera at the North Star or Polaris which is the technical name for it. I used an app on my phone called Star Walk which gives you a realtime view of the current night sky at your location and doesn't require a cellphone signal. It also allows you do do a search for a star name, so I just punched in Polaris and the app present me with arrows of which way to point my camera The whole sky rotates around this point creating the center of the stretch. This is 100-30 second exposures combined in StarStax for the sky and a 20 second exposure for the foreground. :)
If you have any questions about this photo or about photography in general, I will do my best to help, just post a comment or send me a Flickr mail and I will respond as quickly as possible.

The Gardens are part of Singapore’s plan to transform its “Garden City” to a “City in a Garden”.
The conservatory complex at Gardens by the Bay comprises two cooled conservatories – the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest. The construction of the glasshouses is special in two ways. First of all by being able to have such large a glass-roof without additional interior support (such as columns). Secondly, because the constructions aim strongly at minimizing the environmental footprint. Rainwater is collected from the surface and circulated in the cooling system which is connected to the Supertrees. The Supertrees are used both to vent hot air and to cool circulated water (Wikipedia).
The perch is raising his dorsal fin in an effort to discourage the Great Crested Grebe from swallowing it. A futile effort, as it turned out. Water fowl always swallow fish head first to minimize damage from those spiky fins.
Here is my first try editing a photo with Lightroom and Nik plug in software.
I am pleased with the results. The water and fog tones look similar to what I saw that day. The bright orange details were minimized and some details that were fogged out are now visible. When I catch up at my day job, I look forward to more editing.

After spending some time scouting The Queen's Garden Loop Trail on my 2nd day, I returned later that evening and ran across this unique looking tree and it reminded me of the photos i've seen of the old gnarled tree in Schulman Grove in the Bristlecone Forest, which still sits on my bucket list. This one turned out a bit grainy even though I used some light panels and ISO 1600 to minimize the noise but I thought it still looked interesting. I still have a lot to learn and this is part of the road to MW nirvana which still eludes me. I suspect it's the fact that I have a crop sensor camera when I really should be using a Full Frame for this kind of photography, or it could be operator malfunction and inexperience. I probably won't know until I upgrade, I'm holding out for the 6D Mrk II which should be out spring 2016. :)

The sound of screaming followed by laughter could be heard through the amusement park. Some riding the roller coaster were screaming, some riding the merry-go-round were laughing-screaming (You know when you are screaming but it is more like a happy scream? I know you get it!)
Then, there is another type of screaming; The silent type. The one that is hidden deep within the dusted corners of your heart, numbed up by the mind that refuses to acknowledge it. Anger that turns into rage which ultimately explodes. Most do not understand how long it was bottled up that when it was time to address it, there was no chance to minimize the debris.
Being misunderstood is the saddest silent scream ever. When perceptions are made final with no room to understand that perhaps it is not just because she didn't like something, what if it was something she was constantly being given that she reached a boiling point and was fed up of accepting it, finally?!
Yet, they will say the same thing over and over again, "You hurt, you rage." Never looking deeper into the reason of "Why?"

Canoe Bridge
Southwest, False Creek
Vancouver, BC
Canada
Canoe bridge was designed in the shape of a canoe and spans Jarvis Inlet and is located in the 2010 Winter Olympics athletes' village.
Appropriately named, this walk bridge was built on the waterfront of False Creek - well known for Kayaking, Canoeing & Dragon Boating.
The bridge was designed with the environment in mind. The bridge deck is made up of closely spaced slats that allow plenty of sunlight to shine through. This design minimizes bridge shadows on the water below, so that aquatic plants and creatures aren't affected by the darkness.

In architecture, a gargoyle is a carved or formed grotesque with a spout designed to convey water from a roof and away from the side of a building, thereby preventing rainwater from running down masonry walls and eroding the mortar between. Architects often used multiple gargoyles on a building to divide the flow of rainwater off the roof to minimize the potential damage from a rainstorm. A trough is cut in the back of the gargoyle and rainwater typically exits through the open mouth.

A solitary Round Leaved Hepatica plant (Hepatica nobilis var. obtusa) emerges through layers of leaf litter and blooms in the Spring sunshine.
Round leaved Hepatica is a woodland plant that is native to East North America. It is among the first plants to flower in Spring and is adapted to cold by it's small size and by growing close to the ground. Plants also possess a covering of fine hair on leaves and stems that acts as insulation by trapping heat. Somewhat unflatteringly, the name Hepatica is derived from the three lobed shape of the leaves (and deep red-brown color after overwintering) that are supposed to resemble the shape and color of a liver.
This wild flower was photographed in situ taking care to minimize disturbance.

from Wikipedia:
"The Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus), also known as the white fox, polar fox, or snow fox, is a small species of fox native to the Arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere and common throughout the Arctic tundra biome. It is well adapted to living in cold environments, and is best known for its thick, warm fur that is also used as camouflage. It has a large and very fluffy tail. In the wild, most individuals do not live past their first year but some exceptional ones survive up to 11 years. Its body length ranges from 46 to 68 cm (18 to 27 in), with a generally rounded body shape to minimize the escape of body heat.
The Arctic fox preys on many small creatures such as lemmings, voles, ringed seal pups, fish, waterfowl, and seabirds. It also eats carrion, berries, seaweed, and insects and other small invertebrates. Arctic foxes form monogamous pairs during the breeding season and they stay together to raise their young in complex underground dens. Occasionally, other family members may assist in raising their young. Natural predators of the Arctic fox are golden eagles, Arctic wolves, polar bears, wolverines, red foxes, and grizzly bears.
Arctic foxes must endure a temperature difference of up to 90–100 °C (160–180 °F) between the external environment and their internal core temperature. To prevent heat loss, the Arctic fox curls up tightly tucking its legs and head under its body and behind its furry tail. This position gives the fox the smallest surface area to volume ratio and protects the least insulated areas. Arctic foxes also stay warm by getting out of the wind and residing in their dens. Although the Arctic foxes are active year-round and do not hibernate, they attempt to preserve fat by reducing their locomotor activity. They build up their fat reserves in the autumn, sometimes increasing their body weight by more than 50%. This provides greater insulation during the winter and a source of energy when food is scarce.
In the spring, the Arctic fox's attention switches to reproduction and a home for their potential offspring. They live in large dens in frost-free, slightly raised ground. These are complex systems of tunnels covering as much as 1,000 m2 (11,000 sq ft) and are often in eskers, long ridges of sedimentary material deposited in formerly glaciated regions. These dens may be in existence for many decades and are used by many generations of foxes. "

Another installment of Fuzztar Lens Friday. I have made mention of the 75-200 Vivitar lens that I foolishly used during the late 1980s when I lived in Texas, then New Hampshire, then Montana before I realized that a good camera cant take good photos with a POS lens. I still find shots such as this that make me cringe at my stupidity. I guess you were suppose to focus as well as zoom. And what's a loupe? At least photo shop can now minimize the severe vignette around the edges.

We found this guy mid afternoon when the light was challenging. It is not that there are not quite a few of this species that we encounter but the location was perfect as I was fairly confident I could perch him on one of a series of snags popping up from a very large downed tree. The bird was singing uphill and the snags were on the downhill side of the road putting them at mid canopy level. Hooded warblers tend to often respond rather silently to playback. He was singing persistently uphill so when I played a single song and he stopped I knew he heard it. So you wait and resist the urge to use more playback. Then I heard him singing partial songs very softly on the downhill side not even noticing prior to that that he had crossed the road. It was barely audible and my client didn't hear him. A few gentle chip notes and he perched right where I anticipated he would bursting into song. When a bird responds like that rather than being jumpy back and forth you've done well and are much more apt to get better images and you've most probably minimized any impact on the bird.

Birds of prey, found mainly in Africa. When a soaring snake-eagle spots a snake, it swoops down suddenly, grabbing with its talons. Then it immediately flies upward, as the snake writhes and strikes. The first order of business is to minimize the danger, so the eagle crushes or tears off the snake’s head. Still on the wing, it then swallows the entire snake, head first. Snake-eagles are a bit smaller than Bald Eagles. There are six different species. And they live mainly in Africa, although one ranges as far as Europe and India. [Credit: Audubon]
