A winter view of the mill pond and mill at Beckman Mill near Beloit, Wisconsin. This 1868 grist mill is operational with power being supplied by its original water driven Leffel turbine. It was built shortly after the Civil War by millwright William Howe of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. In 1882 it was acquired by August Beckmann who had previously operated mills in nearby Juda and Hanover. The mill was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Best viewed on black. Processed in Photomatix Pro.
The Chesapeake Mill lies in the heart of Hampshire. An extraordinary Grade II* listed building that has both a fascinating and unique history.
The Chesapeake Mill is a watermill in Wickham, Hampshire, England. The mill was designed and constructed in 1820 using the timbers of HMS Chesapeake, which had previously been the United States Navy frigate USS Chesapeake. Chesapeake had been captured by the Royal Navy frigate HMS Shannon during the War of 1812. John Prior paid the sum of £500 for the timbers sold at Portsmouth Naval Dockyard. The interior of the mill was designed around the dimensions of the deck beams. The mill remained in operation until 1976.
Today the mill offers a fantastic shopping experience, a world of great style and unique treasures. An eclectic mix of antiques, home furnishings, gifts and jewellery. Every visit is sure to prove surprising and inspirational.
I thought I should post this shot again on Flickr (originally posted in September) but this time enhanced using Photoshop. The scene is Little Mill Junction Signal Box, not an easy place to find, situated approximately 10km south of Abergavenny. A northbound Margam - Dee Marsh loaded steel coil (6M86) train powered by 66199, is seen approaching the signal box. The single line on the left, now a siding, is a remnant of the former branch line to Monmouth, which was closed in 1965. It is sometimes used by Railtrack engineering trains.
The signal box was built in 1883 by McKenzie and Holland for the Great Western Railway and has 17 levers with vertical tappet interlocking, 9 of which are active. In addition, it has an Entrance-Exit (NX) panel for signalling and is a transition point between automatic and manual block. It is also the first signal box on the Marches line north of Newport.
I do not believe the box is listed and according to my research is scheduled to be decommissioned in 2017.
Mill Lane Cemetery was a rather fortunate find in a residential area of Shoreham, that I only found about by spotting it on the map not far from St Nicholas Church.
Turned out to be a great find, with some interesting modern monuments set over a large area, plus a smaller section in one corner where all the older monuments are.
A little out of the way compared to some of Shorehams other locations, but well worth making the effort to find.
Spring Mill Pond is a popular swimming hole at Island Lake State Recreation Area near Brighton Michigan. I suspect it is an old gravel pit which makes the water very clear.

A familiar sight to Kansas travelers, this old stone mill sits in Wamego's community park. It was originally located on the farmstead of a Dutch immigrant, later moved to town, stone by stone.
I first photographed this landmark several years ago, as seen on flickr at www.flickr.com/photos/kansasexplorer3128/136632246/. Passing through town again, I wanted to shoot the mill again with different equipment, and with different perspectives.

Abandoned steel mill switcher at the former Wheeling Steel Plant/Complex in Benwood, WV. Having seen it's better days the yard switcher is slowly rusting away on a rail spur. Mill closed in the late 1970's. Photograph taken September 2011.
Todmorden Mills was a small settlement located in the Don River valley in Toronto, Ontario. It started out as a lumber mill in the 1790s. Originally known as "Don Mills", it grew into a small industrial complex and village before becoming part of East York in the 20th century. Currently the valley site is occupied by the Todmorden Mills Heritage Museum and Arts Centre, which includes the museum, art gallery, a theatre and a forest preserve.
The Earl Mill was originally built in 1860 for the Earl Mill Co Ltd. It was rebuilt in 1891 and extended two years later, and again in 1920. Production ended in 1930 and after a number of other uses it is now mainly offices. The rebuilding of 1891 was to the design of P.S. Stott. The engines was a 1,250hp horizontal twin tandem compound by Buckley & Taylor.

I believe the Crystal Mill is the most photographed place in Colorado. I just took a trip there and had a wonderful day. This is a take on the Mill I kind of like. There will be more later.

Last days of the St Pancras - Manchester service, calling at New Mills. Also the last time I caught this train!
New Hamburg mill on the Nith river in New Hamburg, Wilmot township, Waterloo Region, Ontario. New Hamburg owes its heritage to this now unassuming looking mill. It was William Scott who acquired the property and water rights from Abraham Shade in 1845. Scott built a new mill on the property and a mill race nearly a third of a mile long to power it. The mill prospered when the Grand Truck Railway was built through New Hamburg in 1856. Scott sold his holdings to Parker and Wilson in 1864. The mill passed through a succession of owners until a boiler explosion severely damaged the building in 1889. Fred Merner rebuilt the mill and sold it to his brother Christian. It passed through a number of owners again until, you guessed it, the frame mill finally succumbed to a spectacular mill fire in 1902. The Stuart brothers from Mitchell, Ontario rebuilt the mill in 1904. The three story brick building is still standing here today. New Hamburg Flour Mills bought the mill from the Stuart brothers in 1922. The water turbines and water wheels were still used into the 1940s and 1950s to back up the mill during hydro shortages. Water power stopped being used when the flour production stopped. Today the mill race has been filled in but the old turbine equipment still lingers in the basement. B-W Feed & Seed Limited is the current owner of the mill. The mill is part of the Heritage Conservation district in New Hamburg. Though the mill race is gone you can still see the dam and mill pond downtown. You can also visit the commemorative Heritage Water Wheel that has been built near the dam. It is the largest operating water wheel in North America and was built as a symbol of the New Hamburg water mill heritage.
What looks to be an abandoned mill of some sort in Livingston Manor, NY along the old O&W railroad main line.
