I thought it would be fun to 'visit' Scotts Mill and take a look at what was in the dark basement.

This was my favorite part - a table with all sorts of things around it - the lighting was just as you see it.

"Mill City Museum is a Minnesota Historical Society museum in Minneapolis. It opened in 2003, built in the ruins of the Washburn "A" Mill next to Mill Ruins Park on the banks of the Mississippi River. The museum focuses on the founding and growth of Minneapolis, especially flour milling and the other industries that used water power from Saint Anthony Falls.

The mill complex, dating from the 1870s, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is part of the St. Anthony Falls Historic District and within the National Park Service's Mississippi National River and Recreation Area."--from wikipedia

This lovely old sandstone structure, dating to the 1800s, has sadly been left to crumble and is rapidly disintegrating. Situated close to the heart of Greenholme Mill, its once-proud decorated arches seem to signify a former importance as some sort of administrative block or foreman's office.

I suspect the mill was there before the trees

Storm clouds receding to the East behind the mill and the front lit by the afternoon sun. This mill dates from 1170, reconstructed in 1792 and is still in working order. The tide fills a pool behind the mill where it is kept until the tide has fallen. The water is then released via the water wheel that powers the mill.

Now that we had a rain free day, I decided to try my goal: Ride from Downtown St. Paul to Downtown Minneapolis on my bike. (or close enough there.) This HDR turned out to be tricky. I took a series of pictures handheld. Then I had to sort through them to get a decent render.

The Rock Run Mill was built in 1794 by John Stump, a prominent businessman, on land originally known as "Land of Promise." The mill was in continuous operation until 1954. It is one of the oldest mills still standing in Harford County (Maryland).

The building was restored by the State of Maryland in 1965. The huge water wheel, which drives the French-made mill stones, is an exact replica of the original. The water wheel turns from the weight of the water filling the buckets. Although it weighs twelve tons, the wheel is so finely balanced that less than two pounds of force will turn it.

***EDIT***

Obviously the light was a little harsh but I thought the water wheel was interesting. I look forward to returning and getting a shot before the sun gets too high.

Starr's Mill, just north of Senoia, GA. Well-photographed location, but that doesn't keep everyone (like me) from trying to capture it in a slightly different way.

This has been a winter of dustings. Another last night. I was able to get out early before the temperature rose and the snow fell from the trees. The mill village of Harrisville, NH is one of favorite spots in any season.

The grey buildings in the foreground are original Monson slate mill buildings, now converted for furniture production. The eastern of the main quarry branches came in across the divide between Kineo and Monson Pond quarries and down from the left of the photo.

These buildings can be seen in this view from when the quarry and railway were operating: www.mindat.org/photo-363735.html. The building in the foreground above is readily identifiable in the older photo, as is the large chimney stack and the main building between them.

"The Mill City House represents a method and period of construction as a rare intact one and one-half story Pioneer Log building associated with Colorado's early mining settlements. Simple construction materials and techniques include the broad-axe hewn log walls that have squared-up exterior and interior faces, V-notched and half-dove tail notched corners, sawn wood chinking, lime composition daubing, and gable roofs, all of which exemplify the Pioneer Log method of construction employed by miners. It exhibits the readily available materials from nearby forests miners with limited means found quickly and inexpensively. The Mill City House reflects the evolution of the early Pioneer Log cabin constructed quickly for a mining settlement to a refined road house with clapboard covering the logs at one time. It began as two cabins constructed during the early mining period in Clear Creek County, possibly for miners and their families and were joined at an unknown date, likely in the mid-1860s"--Description from the History Colorado website.

This cabinet card is unquestionably of the Mills daughters, but which one is which? The one on the left and the one at the top, look so much alike. One of them is Maude, but I'm not sure which one. There were no ugly women in this family! The cabinet card is by Townsend, no location shown. The back is dated January 25, 1890.

"Mom", on the right, would be Georgiana (Slygh) Mills, wife of John M. Mills, Tiskilwa, Illinois. She would be 52 years old in this photo.

I now believe that "Townsend, Artist", was a traveling photographer. There were at least three Townsends, who are listed in Brown's book, "Collector's Guide To 19th Century USA Traveling Photographers". All three worked out of Iowa, though the relationship between them is not clear. I. L. Townsend worked out of Iowa Falls, with J. N. Townsend, and worked alone, out of West Branch. J. N. Townsend was a stereograph photographer, who worked with I. L. Townsend, out of Iowa Falls. The third one was L. M. Townsend operated in Iowa, 1887 - 1890, and was at some point a stereograph photographer out of West Liberty, Iowa. Brown says that cabinet cards, imprinted in green, "Townsend, Artist", may have originated with him, but could have also been connected to the other two.

Had occasion to go to the new Bunnings (I hate Bunnings with a passion) on Saturday and noticed some uncommissioned artwork on an old building that waspart of the Allied Mills Flour Mill or the Toowoomba Foundry, parts of which were destroyed in the floods of 2010. I returned early Sunday morning, without the presence of any carpark lunacy to grab a few shots.

Extensive flooding in the Southern Interior Region has caused washouts, mudslides and prompted multiple evacuation alerts across the region. Crews are working to restore impacted sites across the region. For up to the minute information on road conditions and additional information, check DriveBC.

For detailed information on the impacted infrastructure visit our travel advisory website: www.tranbc.ca/southern-interior-flood-recovery-travel-adv...

Osmington Mills is a coastal village situated between Ringstead Bay and the town of Weymouth in Dorset, England. The village is a popular tourist spot providing numerous holiday facilities (including camping and caravan sites). Its also famous for a 13th century pub-restaurant called Smuggler's Inn (which was public house). This lovely old pub with parts said to date from the 13th century was once the home of the leader of the most notorious gang of smugglers in the area during the 18th and 19th centuries, Emmanuel Charles. The beach close to the village is very popular with fossil hunters.

This water-powered mill in Barrington, Nova Scotia, operated from 1884 until the 1960s. All steps in the production of wool were carried out here, from washing the raw fleeces in the washhouse at the left through picking the wool to separate the fibres, carding, spinning, and weaving. Now operated by the Nova Scotia Museum, the mill attracts a steady stream of visitors during the summer months.
