Asteroid bodies are stellate inclusions with numerous rays radiating from a central core that are present in the cytoplasm of giant cells. . They may be be seen in sarcoidosis and other granulomatous disorders. They are most frequently encountered in the giant cells of foreign body granulomas. Multiple asteroid bodies may be present in a single giant cell as seen in this image.

Asbestos fibers (not seen) coated with iron, resulting in production of characteristic dumbbell-shaped asbestos (ferruginous) bodies. Many of the asbestos bodies are fragmented. Similar structures may be induced by other fibrous minerals.
This alveolus is lined by highly atypical cells some of which have a hobnail appearance. Small nests of invasive adenocarcinoma are seen along the left border.

In this transbronchial biopsy there are very few foamy alveolar casts.The GMS stain shows typical Pneumocystis cysts.

Also depicted is a standardized Walton-Beckett graticule with incremental graduated x-y axes measured in micrometer units (microns); diameter is approx. 100-µm across. Encircling the graticule area are measured scale markers in 3:1 length-to-width aspect ratio for visual reference. The green color is from a green-tinted light interference filter.
Pulmonary giant cell carcinoma represents a rare variety of non-small cell lung carcinoma that is characterized by the presence of numerous tumor giant cells and an influx of inflammatory cells that are mostly polymorphonuclear leukocytes admixed with macrophages. The dense oval aggregates of polymorphonuclear leukocytes seen in this image are probably located in the cytoplasm of tumor giant cells (emperiopolesis) that have been sectioned in a plane that does not include their nuclei
The gumma consists of a central area of coagulative necrosis well demarcated from a peripheral zone of fibrosis containing chronic inflammatory cells. The causative microorganism, Treponema pallidum, cannot usually be found.

This image shows invasive carcinoma with a few areas of lepidic growth lining alveoli. This is from the same core biopsy specimens as the previous 2 images that exhibited a predominantly lepidic growth pattern.
Taken with a Microscope and attached DSLR camera... I made them into HDR's but otherwise did not feel like editing them. Sorry.

These are images of biopsy tract fibrosis encountered in resection specimens following a biopsy. This finding can be mistaken for organizing pneumonia.

Peripheral lepidic growth as seen in the right third of this image is a common finding in pulmonary adenocarcinoma.

Acantholytic squamous carcinoma, also known as adenoid, pseudoglandular or pseudovascular SCC, has been reported most frequently in the skin and appears to be rare in the lungs. It is characterized by loss of cohesion between tumor cells due to loss of adhesion molecules at desmosomes that may result in gland-like and vascular-like structures that may be misinterpreted as adenocarcinoma or angiosarcoma respectively. These tumors consistently express squamous markers such as p40 and p63 which are used to confirm the diagnosis.

Pulmonary blastoma is a biphasic malignant neoplasm occurring in adults that contains an epithelial component (usually fetal adenocarcinoma) and a sarcomatous component that may be undifferentiated or that may have foci of osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma or rhandomyosarcoma. This image contains fetal type adenocarcinoma and undifferentiated sarcoma.
