Field Damsel Bug found on a fencepost in the Finglandrigg Wood Nature Reserve, 29 November 17.

 

As it wasn't possible to get any acceptable shots in situ, the specimen was collected and photographed (alive!) at home later in the day using the integral camera on my SX10D microscope. Although this species is apparently locally widespread it's not one I've seen before.

 

Note on identification: According to British Bugs this species can be distinguished from other similar-looking damsel bugs by the following features: The wings extend beyond the tip of the abdomen (Photo 1); there are hairs on the forewings (Photo 2); the maximum width of the pronotum is considerably greater than its length (Photo 2). On this final point it's noted that figures of 1.75 and 1.30 - presumably mm - are quoted on the website, which compare well with the measured dimensions marked on Photo 2.

Through a microscope, a close (close) up view. All I got for "from another world." The world within and in this case 'in close' is one of intricacy, complexity, and beauty. We search for answers and, as usual, have a ways left to go. These little guys help me to be able to ask the questions... and if all goes well, my experiments will work!
