This model microscope does not win many points on ergonomics; not with the focus knob at the back. The reason for placing it there, is that the mechanism that raises and lowers the objectives is rather chunky. By turning the focus knob, a linear actuator lifts or lowers the objective carousel. Of course, it is possible to raise them too high and crush the objective into the table. If you have never cracked a slide, you never have used a microscope! (After I wired the microscope up, though, the carousel gets stuck just below the maximum height...)

Nothing to see here! Move along... I thought I made it with a girth that would comfortably allow the lights to wire through. Pah! Only by de- and reconstructing I got the wiring in; the lights to the oculars are on a wire with an extension cord, it just fits through the bottom...

A new boom stand for the Usb microscope - I can now monitor the entire cutting surface by swinging the stand left or right

 

There is about 10mm clearance from the platter to the bottom of the microscope & with a 1.5 to 2mm thick record brings the clearance height to about 8mm

The exposed screw heads would keep the stepper motor from moving on the 'sled.' In reality, I think a redesigned rig won't need that ability to adjust - you can slide the timing belts onto the pulleys without moving the motor on the sled, but the flexibility does make the rig adjustable to other microscopes.

 

In order to handle the exposed screwheads I made a second motor mount piece, called the 'slide' (since it slides on the sled. creating language to describe parts is hard :-/)

 

The pieces are identical, except that the screw holes on the slide are large enough for the screw heads. This allows the laser cutter to create parts with countersunk screws.

An interesting look at everyday things.

I bought a cheap USB powered Microscope and then started exploring. Some of the images were very unexpected so I thought I would post a few.
