On this phosphorescent screen, one can see the pattern created by the diffraction of the low energy (1kV) electrons accelerated to the sample. Electron gun is on the center of the image. All components are under UHV (below 5.E-10mbar).

Prélevé dans un lac de montagne (alt 2200 m ). Aelosoma est un des représentants les plus primitifs des annélides oligochètes.

Une reproduction sexuée existe mais elle est fort rare. Le plus souvent, la reproduction est asexuée, par fission, l'animal se segmente en "bourgeons" appelés zoïdes, dans la partie postérieure (pygidium) de l'animal. Progressivement on voit se différencier un prostomum et le tube digestif se contracter. Ce processus est continu durant la vie et l'on peut voir se former dans un même individu des zoïdes successifs non détachés.

Phase contrast microscopy is a technically fairly easy trick to increase the contrast of the image. It was invented by a Dutch guy, Frits Zernike, who earned a Nobel prize for it. Funny, because another Dutch guy, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, invented the microscope! I remain to this day clueless on how to reproduce the rings in bricks... So no rings, but it does slide!
