Apparently these tiny little bits of plastic do far more damage than larger man-made objects in the sea. Animals eat them and so don't get enough real food and/or die.

It's hard to see what "beach cleans" and the like can do about the stuff that washes up on beaches - it's far too tiny to pick up every bit.

Nikon D300, Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 micro AIS

A lens test image taken with the 55mm f/2.8 micro, at f/8. Normally I'd use this lens for macro work. This sample, while perhaps too sharp for portrait work, illustrates what this small lens is capable of. Original image is 1:1 pixels (no resize, only crop)

Pros:

- very sharp

- compact

- recessed front element eliminates need for hood (unless filters are mounted)

- very good build quality

- full frame

Cons:

- the grease used on the focusing helicoid is prone to separation.

Other:

- AIS

- takes 52mm filters, like most other AI/AIS lenses of this era.

- works best on camera bodies that can read the mechanical aperture setting (D200+)

- can be used with Nikon PK-13 extension tube
