Crystal Method at Coachella

This was my first test of the so-called "Brenizer Method", named after Ryan Brenzier. Here is a description of it: blog.buiphotography.com/2009/07/the-brenizer-method-expla...

The basic idea is that wide angles have a large depth of field, whereas portrait lenses have shallow depth of field. To get the best of both worlds- a large view with the pleasantness of portraiture (which makes you focus more on the subject and less on the background, by softening it), you need to take a grid, or mosaic, of pictures with a portrait style lens at the widest aperture.

I used a 50mm lens at f1.8, the best I have. I shot 19 photos to get this grid, though not all of them are shown, as I've cropped it a bit to be rectangular.

I selected the Mustangs at Las Colinas, as I figured they would make a good first step. I did try about 42 pictures for a larger picture, but Photoshop's stitching software just could not handle all the duplicate, rectangular windows on these buildings- it had no idea where to line them up (and I admit, even manual alignment was very difficult and the results were unsatisfactory). But this works, so here it is, my first use of the Brenizer Method, or Wide-Angle, Shallow Depth-of-Field (WASDOF :), or Bokeh Panorama, however you want to call it.

Oslo International Film Festival 2011 opens with a gala screening of David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method on Wednesday, November 16th. We are proud to present the Canadian director’s latest feature film. A Dangerous Method premiered at the Venice Film Festival earlier this fall, and has since had great success at the film festivals in Toronto, New York, London and Vienna. In his third collaboration with Cronenberg, leading man Viggo Mortensen is cast as Sigmund Freud. The promising psychiatrist Carl Jung is portrayed by Michael Fassbender. Keira Knightley plays Sabina Spilrein, the young Russian patient who will have a decisive influence on the the relationship between Freud and Jung and their work. The plot takes place in Vienna and Zürich in the years prior to World War I. Based on real events, the film tells the story about the pioneers of psychoanalysis and the conflict between them.

We used the "mudding in" method of planting, traditionally used for citrus trees, in which a hole is dug, larger than the root ball, the hole is filled with water, and the plant is actually planted under water. In our light, well-drained soils, the method gives excellent root/soil contact. Plants were severely pruned back to minimize water stress.

In the fall of 2014 Prof. dr. ir. Oswald Devisch and PhD student Sarah Martens went in search of new methods to involve a diverse range of agents in the spatial management of a district. In the nearby village of Godsheide, they explored, together with the community residents, to which future the current transformations might lead. They gained insight in these (spatial) transformations, how they are perceived and the various roles one could assume. The idea was not to formulate a future vision in the format of a plan or a policy document, but to explore the future by building upon ongoing transformations. In collaboration with the community residents they reflected on what can change now, and which role they could play today. Together, they visualized and tested envisioned futures. This workshop was a part of the Futures Lab of the Future Fictions exhibition.
