Today I facilitated workshops with LEGO.
LEGO is great for building metaphors and expressing images instead of just talking.
It was great fun and people were really surprised as to what they themselves had built.
However you want to take it ("The Cubs are trash." or "The Cubs are taking out the trash." or, maybe, now that the Dusty Baker years are over, just a good old, "What a waste."), the cliche is piss poor and no snapshot photographer can resist. Chicago, Illinois, March 2007.
I randomly took this photo as this kid butted in on another photo I was taking, but because I'm a loser, I devised a metaphor for it. Western culture intruding on the traditions of the Nepali people, whose youth merely embrace it over their own culture or something? I dunno. That's the best I could do.
They say what we wear is a reflection of ourselves. Our closet and clothing is a reflection of how we want to represent ourselves and how we want others to view us. It is a metaphor for how we want to show how we feel on the inside to others, for example wearing black at a funeral or wearing bright colors for a dance. It is a very conceptual approach but I think it is a successful way of capturing a metaphor through a photograph. This was also taken in artificial light which was not very good lighting but I didn't have a choice in light so I had to edit it a bit more to try and fix the lighting.
Black & White visual analogy that represents the proper perspective for teachers to assign Bloom's Taxonomy levels when writing lesson plans and designing activities. Bloom's Taxonomy level is applied to student work, not teacher work. CC BY NC 4.0 authors: Paris Strom & Sara Wolf
Belleville, IL. July 2011.
LIghting info: SB900 bare at camera left, 1/2 power. ISO 200, f/8, 1/200th. Note: This actually came out about a stop overexposed and was adjusted in camera raw. Yongnuo RF-602 triggers.
I borrowed a Mission: SP/\CE metaphor here to note the practice stylings of our two cast members. The lady cast member on the right was very indulgent and gave everyone on her Segway ample time to right themselves and even pose for a photo. My guy on the left there was crisp. His line moved dammit. I almost ran him over but I got on, I got around, and I got off.
One of these years I want to do the early morning Epcot Segway tour.

This is logo of the CBC, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. It is a clean, simple, well-balanced design and I think is a metaphor for broadcasting radio and television waves.
An example for the DS106 Design Blitz.
It snowed here in the Northeast the other night. Where I grew up, in the NW, it hardly ever snows. Sure, it rains like God forgot His promise not to flood the world again, but it hardly ever snows.
When I was driving, I realized just how unequipped, physically and emotionally, I am for driving in these conditions. For a lot of people who live in very wintery climates (like Canada and Wisconsin), it's easier. I'm completely inept. I started thinking about all the times that I get frustrated when people don't understand diabetes. They ask me stupid questions or make assumptions. "You have an insulin pump," they say, or "Why can't you just do the same thing and have it work?"
When you live far away, the snow looks pretty and soft and you might think, "Oh, I wish it snowed more here." But if you get into it and you're not prepared, you're in for a huge awakening. Those of us who are more familiar with this territory know how treacherous it can be. But we also know the safety precautions to stay alive.
This was a very long metaphor and I hope it makes sense. Let me know what you think.
This bed of irises was put together solely from found rock for the borders, and filled with compost from my bin. The irises are starting to fill it in well.
My time spent outside tending the flowers and trees yields valuable metaphors.
