Elephant #198, Mammoth Metaphor, stands on the Nelson Stair in Somerset House. It only arrived today!
It took a poet to point out the fact that this picture is comprised of two balls, a stick, and a hole. Who would have thought? Thanks to Chris Dollard for the insight/humor.
Every skill or bit of information that we learn is like a building block. New knowledge is built on old knowledge to create understanding. Sure, things may fall apart now and then, but more learning can come from our mistakes.
Utilising the metaphor of the bone – both as a symbol for death and as a sustaining factor of life, Canberra artist Keziah Craven explores mortality. Craven incorporates the use of a black and white colour palette and structural materials including plastic drinking straws and PVC pipes to explore the internal makeup of bones and investigate their structures. Looking at one of Craven's exhibits in her current exhibition Osteology at Canberra's M16 Artspace, I was attracted to a patch of light shining (from overhead lamps) on the black straws. Small movements of my viewing position moved the light to different areas and changed the sizes of the patch. I don't usually photograph other people's artworks but on this occasion I captured four images and created this from them.

OZYMANDIAS
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
This is how Justin is feeling today -- bright and cheery, and yet, a little droopy. That said, he is markedly better compared to yesterday. He didn't even register a fever today! TamiFlu is some goooooooood stuff.
I have taken this old woman because I found the atmosphere interesting and the composition really suggestive.
Like younger other people in the background, she is walking to the open door... Door dividing limited life to the freedom lifeless.
In June, Christine and I took a ferry to Santander and drove down through northern Spain and Portugal to the Algarve where we met Christian and Stefan and their girlfriends Adela and Lara for a week at Dunas Dourados Beach Club near Vale do Lobo. Chris and I then drove back through Spain to Bilbao. We stayed at a number of fascinating and historic Paradores, Pousadas and hotels en route. This is one of a collection of photos that marked our trip.
