20190323_3692_7D2-27 Chalk Message #3

It is nearly eight days since the horrific mosque shootings in Christchurch and it has been a difficult week. 50 people died in two locations in the city.

Photography has not been a major focus, and if it wasn't for the fact that I am into my fourth year of a "photo a day" project I would have put the camera away for a few days.

We took our grandson Ethan to his children's cricket game this morning at his home ground of Edgar McIntosh Park, and beside the field were a lot of chalk drawn messages, all on the footpath apart from a couple on the rear wall of the Papanui Bowling Club building, and presumably from school children sometime during the week.

Certain things make a commute tolerable: comfort, space, entertainment, thoughts, and dreams. Most important: being left alone to them.

Every July, thousands of Bostonians gather at the Forest Hills Cemetery for a moving remembrance ceremony inspired by Buddhist rituals. Participants decorate lanterns with calligraphy or personal messages for departed friends and family and then, at sunset, light and launch them into Lake Hibiscus.

This ceremony is based on the traditional Japanese Bon Festival -- when a door is thought to open to the world of the ancestors, allowing the living to send messages to the other side.

Some of the messages and tributes, when observed closely, are truly heartbreaking.

Occupation of Labor Opposition leader Bill Shorten's Moonee Ponds office today to give him a message to stop sitting on the fence over Adani's Carmichael coal mine. He needs to stop equivocating and oppose the mine like fellow MPs Peter Khalil and David Feeney. I met with Bill Shorten with other members of civil society during COP21 in Paris, so he knows how serious climate change is, and how important it is to reduce emissions.

The global coal market is in structural decline and it is time to manage export coal (important for any just transition for existing coal mining businesses and workers) starting with saying no to Adani, a no new mines policy and ending fossil fuel subsidies. These are important if Australia is to meet our fair share of the global target of well below 2 degrees warming enshrined in the Paris Agreement and demonstrate leadership on climate action on a global level.

While the occupation was taking place upstairs, another group was outside the building holding up signs, singing and chanting and entertaining passers-by. About 3pm the protest downstairs concluded and they joined those upstairs in the office. Negotiations started sometime with the police and Office Manager around 4pm. A meeting by three people with his chief of staff tomorrow was negotiated, and everyone left the offices by 4.45pm. No arrests.

Thought you would enjoy this error report that came up on a Vista computer I was trying to fix - says all you need to know about Microsoft really. Roll on Google's Operating System!

It was the message taped on the front door that first attracted my attention:

"NO Flyers

(or I will run you down with my bike)."

I enjoyed the sense of humor behind the threat.

I took the photo.

I'm still amused.

During the drive home, a heart shaped cloud!
