The classic view of Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park. It required patience, a line of photographers waiting for people to stop walking on the arch. I chose a tighter composition, focusing on the arch and the distant landscape.

No money shot for me. Too many tourists.

Mesa Arch just after sunrise. Canyonlands National Park, Utah. Very popular place for sunrises. Luckily I was camping on BLM land and got up super early to be the 1st one there to claim my shooting spot.

A shot from Mesa Verde.

After shooting Milky Way at Delicate Arch, we made our way to Mesa Arch...wanting to get good spots we got there around 3 am, that 3 hours before sunset. There was one car there already but we saw someone was sleeping it it so we were not worry about having people at the Arch...however, about an hour later more cars started to arrive so we started hiking out to the arch. We got there and we were the first one and picked the spot we wanted :D

the classic from Windows ...with us there were also 20 other photographers early in the morning.....very international people from all over the world and a little bit crowdy..!

We left Moab early in the morning, walked in the darkness from the parking lot to the arch and were there at 05:30 am.

But by far not the first ones.

This photo is composed of 3 wide-angle single shots - My son made it easy: With his smartphone he "pulled" a panorama - many easier and an almost comparable picture quality - if you don't enlarge too much

I took a Night Photography class sponsored by Desert Botanical Garden and taught by Ryan Parra - a photography professor at Mesa Community College and Arizona State University. I learned a lot and practiced a lot. I really feel that I had improved significantly by the end of the class. One big problem with classes like this is keeping other photographers out of the frame.

LIGHT BLOOM by HYBYCOZO is a limited-time exhibit where nature and light converge. This mesmerizing display invites you to explore the Garden transformed by stunning geometric light installations that illuminate the beauty of the desert landscape in a new way. As the sun sets, LIGHT BLOOM comes to life, casting intricate shadows and vibrant hues across the Garden. Wander the trails and let the enchanting installations transport you to a magical realm where the natural world meets the abstract.

HYBYCOZO is the collaborative studio of artists Serge Beaulieu and Yelena Filipchuk. Based in Los Angeles, their work consists of larger than life geometric sculptures, often with pattern and texture that draw on inspirations from mathematics, science, and natural phenomena. Typically illuminated, the work celebrates the inherent beauty of form and pattern and represents their ongoing journey in exploring the myriad dimensions of geometry. HYBYCOZO is short for the Hyperspace Bypass Construction Zone, a nod to their favorite novel (The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy) and was the title of their first installation in 2014. They continue to create under this name. In the novel earth was being destroyed to make way for a bypass. It lead Serge and Yelena to ask what it means to make art at a time where the earth’s hospitable time in the universe may be limited.

Q: Walk us through your creative process?

A: The focus of our creative process is to explore the intricate interplay between geometry, light, space and to inspire contemplation, wonder and a sense of place among our audiences. Geometry and pattern-making serve as the backbone of our creative expression. It is the framework through which we navigate the complexities of form, proportion and spatial relationships. Patterns, both simple and complex, have a profound impact on our perception and understanding of the world. They possess the ability to evoke a sense of order, balance and aesthetic pleasure. Pattern making and geometry offer us a means of storytelling and communication. These patterns serve as conduits for deeper exploration, provoking introspection and contemplation to uncover the underlying symbols embedded within the human psyche.

Q: What inspired the concept of LIGHT BLOOM?

A: Just as many cactus and desert plants have evolved to produce night-blooming flowers, adapting to their environment and thriving in darkness, our sculptures come alive after sunset, blossoming with light and transforming the night into a glowing landscape of art and geometry.

Desert Botanical Garden has an incredible collection of plants and cacti arranged in a beautiful park setting.

From January 2006 - my first and only sunrise at Mesa Arch in Utah's amazing Canyonland National park. You can drive a 4x4 on dirt paths down into the canyons you see below this arch... This is not a HDR, but a blend of 3 exposured manually blended in Photoshop CS3 beta.

There was a rain storm in the distance so I could not capture the classic sun flair and rays at sunrise. Non the less it was a beautiful sight looking over Canyonlands through Mesa Arch. Canyonlands National Park near Moab, Utah.

Back to early February we go.

For a day and half now I've been re-working my other website that is hosted by SmugMug. They've just released a whole new SmugMug and frankly it's damn cool. While compiling my galleries from the various states I noticed that my Utah gallery needed more photos.

So here we go with a famous Utah pano. I had the expensive full frame 14-24mm f/2.8 strapped to the front of my D7000 for this morning at Mesa Arch back in early February.

If you have a chance stop by my other site and let me know what you think of the new layout.

Reconstructed Kiva at Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado

Okay, here's the obligatory shot through Mesa Arch from my trip to Canyonlands National Park. Photographers crowd in front of the arch before sunrise, shoulder to shoulder, to catch the rising sun as it breaks the horizon. I wanted no part of that, so I took some other shots away from the arch, then returned after the crowd had dissipated. The sun had just cleared the arch opening and I got some nice bounced light off the foreground rocks, illuminating the underside of the arch. Photos here have become a cliché, but it's hard to resist . . . it really is an awesome sight.

Canyonlands National Park, UT, 2018

Nothing groundbreaking here, just another photo of Mesa Arch. I was never happy with my processing on this image from back in 2016 and while I'm updating my website, I decided to blow off the dust on some old photos and start updating them as well. Over the next couple weeks, I'll be mixing in some of these older, reprocessed photos with new images.

I took this many years ago and wanted to see what it might look like with a few different filters applied. I love the Ortonish effect but I was amazed at how much shadow detail the HDR effect brought out. Above is the Ortonish, below is the HDR converted to B&W.

One of the places I most looked forward to seeing (and photographing!) in the southwest was the view of Mesa Arch at sunrise in Canyonlands National Park. Like most locations in the southwest, it blew away my expectations, and I was additionally lucky to see this stunning sunrise. It was an emotional morning, as I had learned late the night before that a dear friend had passed. Watching the sunrise illuminate the ancient canyons in the distance, and finally illuminate the arch, seemed so right while I processed the loss.

A close look at famous Mesa Arch.

It's been snowing hard around the 4 corners and I sure wish I was in my truck headed for Moab. So that got me to looking back at our trip from this past February with Guy Schmickle.

I was really nice to have use of a Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8 this morning. What a sharp hunk of glass that thing is.

What an awesome sunrise on the 2nd day of 2014!

Happy new year to everyone, to the canyon, to the sun, to the world! :)
