This was my first visit to the Southwest during summer, all my previous trips have been in winter. The big difference (apart from the temperature!) was the number of people. I could go to places such as this in November/December and be the only person there which is quite surreal, knowing you are the only person in the world witnessing the amazing spectacle in front of your eyes. On this occasion though there was a mass of people there and it was quite a task to find a space to squeeze into to take this photo.

I might not have been the only person there, but it was still a magnificent spectacle to witness the sun light up the canyon and the arch.

Morning all......... here is another from Mesa Verde, Colorado.

Up at 4am, there in the dark @ 5am for sunrise @ 6:41am.

In downtown Mesa [Arizona], which was originally settled by Morman pioneers.

One of the fun parts of just getting in the car and heading off is not knowing completely all the destinations you will have. We were able to get up early enough while at Great Sand Dunes National Park to head towards our next destination (Moab), but took the scenic route and went out the way some here for a quick excursion to Mesa Verde. It was a nice surprise for Mrs. Krach, as she really enjoys this park. We had not been here since 2011.

Some tough light there in the late morning, but thinking some of the captures I took here will make nice black and white images.

The Mesa Arch is cool... But the view behind it is far more spectacular...

La Mesa Car Show 2024.

Up long before dawn, we still arrived to a crowd at Mesa Arch even on a weekday. Usually not my cup of tea, but we had a great time talking photo gear and hometowns. Some lingering clouds took away the "perfect" shot as the sun was first breaching the horizon, but a small break still created some fantastic views.

I had a day off yesterday and was up very early. I took off to the east hoping that all of the clouds with the impending storm would help produce a beautiful sunrise. I had not gone to Blue Mesa Reservoir before just to shoot.

I was not to be disappointed with the light. I was disappointed that I didn't see any Rocky Mountain Bighorns. All and all it was just a beautiful day.

The Mesa Redondo Member is the oldest member of the Chinle Formation exposed in the Petrified Forest, mainly in the Tepees area. The Mesa Redondo consists of dark red siltstones as well as sandy conglomerates. The top of the member is very colorful hard layer with yellow, red, and purple mottles. The Mesa Redondo was deposited between 225-227 million years ago.

Looking through Mesa Arch at Washerwoman Arch framed against Airport Tower. The White Rim Road is down below which offers a look back up to Mesa Arch if one looks closely and knows where to look.

Checkerboard Mesa is always worth a visit when going to Zion National Park. The difficulty is just having the perfect window of light, clouds and no one to interfere with the shadows building up on the foreground.

I was really looking to get to Lower Mesa Falls which I think is more visually interesting and is visible from an overlook, but I had a hard time finding the trail. Now I know and I'll have to capture that the next time I'm back there.

From the high mesa at Dead Horse Point State Park, the view east shows another portion of the same mesa, the Colorado River Canyon and the La Sal Mountains. This view looks over the town of Moab, but it is tucked behind a tall ridge and is not visible.

On the hike back from the Citadel I dawdled to enjoy the scenery of Cedar Mesa. Road Canyon is in the foreground, the Bears Ears are on the horizon.

Blue Mesa Trail in Petrified Forest National Park drops into a canyon with an amazing variety of colors and shapes. The blue-gray and purple are bentonite clay and the brown fragments are eroded petrified wood. In ths photo, seasonal run-off has eroded some nice curves through a little side-canyon.

A Black-billed Magpie in Mesa Verde National Park. There were a fair number of Magpies here, but unfortunately, I couldn't get a great photo of one. This was the best I could do.

Amazing sunrise at the Canyonlands National Park, Utah. Mesa Arch glows as the sun rises in the morning. Amazing view and experience.
