Edited ESO image of the galaxies NGC 7173, 7174, and 7176.0

Original caption: Colour-composite image of the triplet of galaxies, catalogued as NGC 7173 (top), 7174 (bottom right) and 7176 (bottom left), and located 106 million light-years away towards the constellation of Piscis Austrinus (the 'Southern Fish'). This triplet of galaxies makes up part of the Hickson Compact Group HCG 90. NGC 7173 and 7176 are elliptical galaxies, while NGC 7174 is a spiral galaxy with quite disturbed dust lanes and a long, twisted tail. This seems to indicate that the two lower galaxies - whose combined shape bears some resemblance to that of a sleeping baby - are currently interacting. Astronomers have suggested that the three galaxies will finally merge. The size of the image is about 5.3 arcminutes. The image is based on data obtained with the VLT FORS1 instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope through three different filters, B, V, and R. The data were extracted from the ESO Science Archive and fully processed by Henri Boffin (ESO).Â

The next picture merged with another of the same view but out of focus. A sort of off-Orton effect.

I devised the idea for this ex post facto. After sorting through all my sunset shots, I realized I could stitch together a number of photos showing the sun setting. Had I realized that ahead of time, I would have taken all those shots with the exact same camera settings. Still, I think this is a fun photo.

Starting from the third panel to the left, notice the famous 'Etruscan vase' shape of the sun as it touches the water. This is a well-known effect of light refraction through multiple layers of atmosphere with different densities and indices of refraction.

When spiral galaxies merge, their black holes form a pair inside the nuclear disk at the center of the greater galaxy that results.

I just joined the library today, after ten years in Korea it is good to have access to English books again. Perks of being home I guess. Borrowed some Photoshop technique books and this photo is the result. A composite of three images, the main photo...a statue (which I shot in Busan a while back), plus some texture and Bokeah that I got from: www.flickr.com/photos/lesbrumes/ Thanks to Lesbrumes for sharing your textures.

Just realized my pro account has expired and my last upload to Flickr was late in 09. Gosh, have I been away from Flickr for that long?.
